I'm fed up of hearing that "high earners" will be targeted by the next budget.

The top 10% of taxpayers pay 60% of income tax.

Don't piss them off. They'll just leave the UK or work less so they're taxed less.

Some more stats: in 2024-25, the top 1% of income tax payers earned 13.3 per cent of total income and paid 28.2 per cent of income tax

35% of adults in the UK pay no tax at all

Yes, because the role I'm in has very little career progression currently for remote workers. I hope with my publications in AI I could be positioned to be in a leadership position in AI in the UK when time comes. Obviously just my hopes haha.

I certainly wish you all the best with it - no signs yet I think but the UK government are certainly hopeful. I've been quite heavily involved in the legislative framework around AI - interesting area certainly.

No, not yet. In January I need to go for a couple of weeks.

Can I ask what city? (Oh wait. It'll probably be revealing). Maybe just the state?

Understand if you won't share.

MariaMyBeck · 04/11/2025 20:33

@ThisRareRobin do you think the EU is too strict with AI regs?

Haha thankfully I don't think it's too outing - SF, California. I think the majority of companies are within the same like 5 sq miles

If I'm totally honest - I'm not actually very familiar. I think this is something that @Kuretake might be best placed to talk about. Particularly because I'm not based in the US, I don't do any work that requires security clearance (no facial ID etc). Everything is very squeaky clean.

I really don't envy those who are making sure that policy keeps up-to-date with developments.

Because you are on here all day? And it’s Tuesday. If you are employed, you aren’t very busy!

I'm ill just now, hence passing the time, but I don't spend all day every day on here.

MariaMyBeck · 04/11/2025 20:57

I think we were all unnecessarily rude to each other today.

Which particular part? If that's some sort of dig at me then crack on, I've met enough folk who assume authority but honestly don't know about anything outside their often prejudiced bubble.

It was supportive of you 🤷🏻

The clue should have been when i agreed with your comment, but I can see where the confusion arose with the word ‘comment’

It's not showing as you having liked my comment, just the response quoting it, so I was slightly confused. Sorry.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 05/11/2025 08:09

No no it’s completely my fault for not being clear

the comment from the poster saying ‘can’t be bothered’ is an extremely stupid one

life would have been so much easier if I had just said that!

I’m not grateful to Elon Musk for creating Tesla. I’m sorry that his monopolising of the worlds resources has contributed to a lower standard of living for millions of ordinary people.

There are lots and lots of illnesses which mean you can’t work but can type….

Tesla has accelerated EV deployment and helped to decarbonise transport. Tesla let competitors use their patents so the whole industry and market could grow.

He hires and employs lots of people who thanks to him can feed their families.

I've been off sick at 2 days this year. I was way too unwell to work. But checking my phone for MN was okay if in bed.

You can be in bed and check your phone for MN but not work emails?

Not everyone has an office job they can do at home if off sick.
This place... 🙄

I can see the emails, but don't have the energy or health to respond and do my actual tasks (which require thinking)

I'd probably look an MN a bit and then sleep.

More assumptions. It's actually none of your business.

You're assuming everyone is working in a job where they get work e-mails.

I remember on here a poster that was off sick with a very bad back. She was a an office cleaner. Someone actually suggested she work on reception in her office building instead.

Lots of people in the U.S. But is there anybody in the UK other than car show rooms?

Plus if i was ill enough to be bed ridden my office wouldn’t let me work
