I'm fed up of hearing that "high earners" will be targeted by the next budget.

The top 10% of taxpayers pay 60% of income tax.

Don't piss them off. They'll just leave the UK or work less so they're taxed less.

Some more stats: in 2024-25, the top 1% of income tax payers earned 13.3 per cent of total income and paid 28.2 per cent of income tax

35% of adults in the UK pay no tax at all

i Will crack the jokes. I have worked all my life in the NHS and education. I see things you wouldn’t have a scooby clue goes on. Admit it. You work from home.

No, I don't work from home.
Why are you assuming anything about my life experience, exactly?

feelingalittlehorse · 04/11/2025 19:45

Weird that they never address what they are going to do about the 35% who pay nothing 🤷‍♀️

We went through this for 20 years. My husband worked in dangerous locations and we were left for weeks on end. But it was no different to service/ military personnel. I have 3 great kids, who all work full time and try their best to make their lives better. My husband was made redundant in 2020 during Covid. Did we sink - no.
we tried to swim harder. Money is now tight, but we would never expect to be funded by anyone else and we have a nice house and much to be grateful for. I am 59, work in education and also care for my elderly Father. I am genuinely knackered, but it is what it is and life throws challenges. I seriously don’t want to pay more tax. This government is throwing money away and we should not have to suffer for it.

Congrats to you and your DH on raising your beautiful DC. Sorry to hear that your DH was made redundant. We've had tough times financially in the past, had to budget, take loans from family but we paid it all back.

We are fortunate now that DH is a good position with work. He's constantly busy and has to go abroad which means there's less time for family.

Congrats on your job in education and sorry to hear about your father needing care.

I stopped reading one particular comment, I then replied to something you asked/assumed.

Which 35% in particular?

Perfect28 · 04/11/2025 19:54

@feelingalittlehorsewho pays nothing? Do you mean income tax specifically?

Ok but this seems to go against your earlier posts? US salaries attract talent but you’d like to link wages here so the top isn’t as high.

What goes against my earlier posts?

Was I incorrect r.e. post tax profits?

Hey Maria, I'm happy to give you another chance if you agree to engage with me in good faith. However, otherwise it just really is boring and not productive.

Your post on US pay, the one I’m responding to. Can you see which post that is?

Yes, but I was hoping for a couple of sentences explaining the inconsistency. I'm not sure where my personal employer is based really discounts my proposed pay structures in companies?

Because you are on here all day? And it’s Tuesday. If you are employed, you aren’t very busy!

Because the higher US pay is an attraction for talent.

But you prefer a model for lower top end pay.

These seem contradictory.

I work for a US company as it is the only company that does what we do. I'm hoping there will be a UK company instead, particularly with the opening of the data centres in the NE. AI just really is a different field.

I prefer a model for equitable pay.

BTW I earn near the bottom for what my company pays; I am on the 2nd rung of about 8.

If you do move to that option would you be ok to take a lower salary?

Bloody hell - you earn mid six figures and that's near the bottom? Did you mean mid six figures - like half a million of income?

Yes, because the role I'm in has very little career progression currently for remote workers. I hope with my publications in AI I could be positioned to be in a leadership position in AI in the UK when time comes. Obviously just my hopes haha.

I mean 300k. I guess a bit below mid but I meant more than just barely six figures.

No, not yet. In January I need to go for a couple of weeks.

Well best of luck, you’re doing well. I have dc who are keen and they mentioned the pay differential with US but I’d rather they be close I think. They have some more years yet so it might change again.
