How to stop disgusting photos on Facebook feed

JellyBabiesmunch · 02/11/2025 20:37

I am sick of revolting photos on the top feed of Facebook. They are just random suggested posts and are stomach churning. I am so disturbed by them I want to close my account. I don’t know how to turn them off.

I honestly havent seen anything like this Op.
My adverts are trying to get me to sign up for stretching and flexibility moves!
Theres nothing like that shown in reels either.

It is a cesspit, no doubt. Unfortunately it is a source of some interesting information at times. I really don’t like it anymore in general however.

Yes, I never used it as "social media" more for local information. How to find a plumber, when a road is closed that kind of thing. It's very useful for that but you can't escape the rubbish. I never had anything offensive but those reels drive me nuts. One second repeatedly. No I won't click to see the rest, I don't want to see any!

which ones are you talking about? The top ones are reels etc posted by accounts you are friends with or follow or have liked and are directly related to the algorithm

The one below is the algorithm giving you what it thinks you want.

i only use the mobile version to post pictures, or make a post, or looking at memories. Otherwise i use the laptop version where you can choose Feeds -> Friends and only see what your friends post.

at this stage the App or the mobile version are pretty unuseable

Why would it think you want to see people with deformities. Why are they peddling such awful stuff to you?

Yes I get really stressed just opening Facebook now. I don’t know what to do about it .

Stop visiting Facebook.
You can step away any time.

The naive idea that it shows you things because it thinks you like or are interested in those things... It's a chumbox. If you can stomach it, read The Complete Taxonomy of Internet Chum. The pictures are unfortunately horrible.

Internet chum has NEVER been about what you like or what you want to see. Disgust, shock and anger are high engagement signals.

Ignore the people trying to insinuate you asked to be shown these terrible things or that it means you are secretly racist/pedo/otherwise deviant. It's a chumbox. They have been around forever/ 15 years or more.

It's not quite that simple, though. I've been doing some digging. The specific feed OP is talking about is the reels panel that appears second on your feed – the first one, at the top, only shows content from people you actually follow. This second one shows content from people you don't follow, but it is algorithmic. It will show you more of the stuff you click on, even if you only clicked on it once, out of utter horror. I agree the algorithm prioritises engagement bait, but it isn't a generic chumbox. I made the mistake of clicking on a reel that showed a baby being resuscitated, and now I get served up loads of birth/baby in medical distress content. I anticipate that it will change when I watch more unrelated videos and it starts serving up something else instead.

@JellyBabiesmunch, your two options really are to stop using Facebook, or to click on other content that you are actually interested in, and it will start serving you that the majority of the time. Depressing, but that's the world we live in.

Clear the cache in FB and browser. Spend a good half hour searching for and viewing pages of things you actually like, close the app/browser after and re open.
If you have non targeted ads selected, this can actually be a problem as it serves up random stuff which can be problematic, it's a bit of a no win situation.

No one has suggested she’s secretly racist. But pages do gain followers and then sell. It work for shock clicks.

Weirdly I don’t have this second row of videos. Not even ones of things I might like.

Netcurtainnelly · 03/11/2025 21:49

You can pay now not to see ads i wonder if it extends to all this crap they send.

JellyBabiesmunch · 09/11/2025 09:08

I’ve managed to block it now but I think I’m going to delete Facebook. So much of it is just A1 crap now full of utter rubbish and made up stories. The days of following friends is over. Instagram isn’t much better.
