Does anyone give their pets a Christmas dinner (or Sunday roast?)

We always have, to both. So they will get some roast chicken etc. The dogs (when they were alive) used to love a roast potato.

Then first year I was with DH he was travelling abroad over Christmas so I made the dogs and I a full dinner. Found out that one of our dogs was a little crazy for prawns in a plain mayonnaise sauce. But they all loved a plate of meat, potatos and meat juices.

We only have cats right now but they get a portion of meat to themselves as well.

Yes DDog gets the Roast leftovers all cut up (veg, potato and meat with gravy) in his bowl so he has a full meal after we've eaten. He will get the same at Christmas.

DCat gets a few bits of meat but surprisingly isn't usually to bothered so DDog gets most of it.

I used to always get my cat (RIP) a special Christmas dinner cat food pouch/tray. Most the time she dodged it in favour of the normal food!

BingBongBish · 31/10/2025 13:01

Our dogs get the meat every Sunday and at Christmas.

Of course! My Newfies would never forgive me

adamduritzvocalchords · 31/10/2025 13:02

My dog gets a roast every Sunday. It’s her favourite day of the week!

SirChenjins · 31/10/2025 13:03

I don't eat meat but our dog will get some when anyone else is eating it. He'll get a Christmas dinner with the various meats this year and will be in his Christmas jumper.

We had one memorable weekend away with my BIL where he insisted on cooking a roast for us all, but he really underestimated how much a big group with several teen boys would eat.

He fed his 2 dogs first - literally taking food from the bowls on the table for them and couldn’t understand why the rest of us (who weren’t dog lovers) were miffed that they couldn’t just have any left overs, or indeed dog food. The portions that the rest of us had were measly and we had to find a local shop to get mid afternoon snacks as a result. He has never been allowed to call the shots on food quantities again, but I maintain that humans should eat before the dogs if it’s human food.

Timeforhector · 31/10/2025 13:05

Yes, but only at Christmas. They love it

caringcarer · 31/10/2025 13:15

My 2 cats get chopped up turkey with gravy on it Xmas day lunch time and again Boxing day. They love to lick the gravy up. My DH 2 dogs get a mix of chopped up turkey a scoop of mashed potatoes, a few peas and carrots mushed up together then gravy on it and all mixed up together. They actually have this at lunch time on Xmas day then again before bed and often again on Boxing day. I make them their own gravy as we have quite a bit of wine in ours. 😁

All of our dogs have always had a Christmas lunch and Sunday lunch. Our current dog also has a small plate of normal dinner with us.

He was abused and had a horrible first 18 months of life so I like to give him as many little treats as possible.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 31/10/2025 13:20

I don’t do a Sunday roast, but we do at Christmas … except this Christmas we are going out. Thinking I’ll have to cook a special meal for my dog now!

RustyBear · 31/10/2025 13:20

When I’m with my daughter, her pug gets her own roast chicken - not some of our turkey because I cook that with garlic which isn’t good for dogs.

Empress13 · 31/10/2025 13:26

Yep

JDM625 · 31/10/2025 13:28

I won't be putting out an entire plate of Christmas food for her, no. I would give her a small amount of beef, chicken, lamb etc in her regular dog food.

I personally wouldn't give her gravy due to the high salt and depending how its made, it might have garlic/onion in it. MIL used to give her dogs all the leftover Indian meal from a take-away! She always wondered why they had terrible diarrhoea the following day!

Mybeautifuldogs · 31/10/2025 13:32

My girls get absolutely spoiled, they have a Sunday roast every week, I make them a cooked breakfast 2 or 3 times a week, and I go all out for them at Christmas too, presents and dinner and their own special pudding as well.

FlorenceAndTheVagine · 31/10/2025 13:35

No, if you give my dog an inch he’ll take a mile. Never ever letting him think human food is for him…

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 31/10/2025 13:36

Why wouldn't you include them, it's when people buy cards for them that I feel a bit cringe

CleanSkin · 31/10/2025 13:37

DDog doesn’t like gravy or vegetables 🙀
Obviously they get bits of leftover fatty meat (they have a v low body fat level) whenever we have spare, but definitely not as priority over people!

SquashPenguin · 31/10/2025 13:38

When we have Christmas dinner the dog’s bowl is passed around and everyone contributes something from their plate to it, so he gets a bit of everything. Safe to say he enjoys this very much. The dog is very popular with all of our family so it’s quite a fun tradition!

QueenClinomania · 31/10/2025 13:39

My cat has a bit of dinner whenever she wants some. If we have a takeaway we get something for her too. Our local chippy does a mini cod and so that's what she has. If we have an Indian my son stops at the shop and gets her some dreamies. She is nearly 12 now and she just assumes there's always something for her whenever we have a treat.

She has gifts wrapped up under the tree at christmas and gets a present on her birthday.

If you promise not to take the piss, I'll tell you something else too.

When we had dinner round the table when the kids were little, she had a chair and a little plate too. (The plate was on the chair not the table so she'd sit on the chair and eat from her little plate on it.)

Shes not a human no, but she is part of our family.

BerolDryWipe · 31/10/2025 13:39

My dog gets the leftovers from Sunday lunch, so whatever is left on the plates that's safe for her. The cat isn't bothered at all, he has no interest in the meat or gravy 🙄

MumChp · 31/10/2025 13:41

No. But they get gifts at Christmas.

Last Saturday we threw a party for the cat. Her birthday party. A cake with candles, fizzy drinks, sweets and g&t. Burgers and chips for tea.

Cat had six guests arriving with presents....

One of our cats used to have chemotherapy. Afterwards I would buy her a fish finger Happy Meal from McDonalds. She loved that.

The day she could not face it, though, I knew we were nearly at the end.

Yes to the meat. Never tried any of them with a potato.

hby9628 · 31/10/2025 13:43

Yes! Our dog gets furious if we have a roast and he doesn’t get any!
