Does anyone give their pets a Christmas dinner (or Sunday roast?)

We always have, to both. So they will get some roast chicken etc. The dogs (when they were alive) used to love a roast potato.

Then first year I was with DH he was travelling abroad over Christmas so I made the dogs and I a full dinner. Found out that one of our dogs was a little crazy for prawns in a plain mayonnaise sauce. But they all loved a plate of meat, potatos and meat juices.

We only have cats right now but they get a portion of meat to themselves as well.

Our cat always gets some of the meat from a roast dinner. My DB has a large dog who he makes a cooked breakfast for his birthday and Christmas each year so I don’t feel we’re excessive putting some leftovers in the cat bowl!

Chickchickchickens · 31/10/2025 13:49

Name changed!

My girls (hens) always get a Christmas lunch, meat, veg, stuffing, gravy the full works, they would go crazy for the pigs in blankets.

However none of them like 'green' food, so the first item to be pushed to the side of the tray were sprouts, and then when nothing else was left and they knew nothing else was forthcoming, the sprouts along with peas would be eaten.

Then they would all have rest, some 'purring' in total happiness!

ImWearingPantaloons · 31/10/2025 14:14

The cat has turkey with a little bit of a pig in a blanket.

We have also been known to give the local strays a Christmas lunch too.

Of course!!!

Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits · 31/10/2025 14:34

Christmas dinner, yes.

Standard Sunday roast, sometimes, but usually if there's a fatty bit noone wants, or such a small bit of meat left it's not worth keeping for another meal, or crackling that didn't crackle or something.

But we never, ever feed him from the table. It's always gathered at the end and put in his bowl in his usual spot.

TheMousePipes · 31/10/2025 14:41

Both the cat and the hamster get a roast dinner every week. The cat gets a bit of everything apart from green things which he WILL NOT tolerate. The hamster lives in the kitchen and she gets really excited when I cook because she knows something interesting is coming. Hamsters aren’t allowed nightshade family plants so no potatoes for her but she loves the veggies and the meat. Except pork, she’s not allowed that because of the nitrate levels so she sulks if we have roast pork. Can usually be mollified with a bit of extra stuffing or Yorkshire though!

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 31/10/2025 14:45

My dog gets a bit of every dinner 😂. Just no onions, garlic or gravy for the salt content.

For Christmas dinner, he’ll get some duck, roast potatoes, veg (he loves veg) and a Yorkshire pudding.

No, but I buy them a special “Christmas dinner” pet food (usually in their stockings which the DC insist they need!)

CheeseNcrackerz · 31/10/2025 15:05

Of course. They also get the privilege of licking the whipping cream whisk after the cream is whipped.

TangyJellyTot · 31/10/2025 15:10

Yes but they only want the meat, Yorkshire pudding and mash. I have been known to buy them a gammon and cook it just for them. Same when Tesco do their half price beef joints in the run up to Christmas

Snowinsummer · 31/10/2025 15:10

My dogs get both a Christmas Dinner & I buy them a Christmas Dinner in a tin. Throughout the year they get small portions of roast dinners whenever we cook them & a tiny slice of cake if it’s a suitable one.

No; I have studied canine behaviour for years and there are no scientific papers that recommend this-all dogs spoiled in this way feel like crying the next day because they don’t understand that it isn’t Christmas again, or another birthday. HTH.

BloodandGlitter · 31/10/2025 15:37

My rats wait at the cage door when I come upstairs from dinner wanting their portion.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/10/2025 15:43

My cat wouldn’t eat a special meal. So I don’t bother. She’s spoiled enough!

Soontobe60 · 31/10/2025 15:43

Our cats would turn their nose up at a Christmas dinner!
they’re too busy watching the Kings speech and knocking back the sherry

I would be interested in seeing the research on that if you could link it please.

My cat has a bit of dinner whenever she wants some. If we have a takeaway we get something for her too. Our local chippy does a mini cod and so that's what she has. If we have an Indian my son stops at the shop and gets her some dreamies. She is nearly 12 now and she just assumes there's always something for her whenever we have a treat.

She has gifts wrapped up under the tree at christmas and gets a present on her birthday.

If you promise not to take the piss, I'll tell you something else too.

When we had dinner round the table when the kids were little, she had a chair and a little plate too. (The plate was on the chair not the table so she'd sit on the chair and eat from her little plate on it.)

Shes not a human no, but she is part of our family.

See this is the sort of thing that restores my faith in the human race and keeps me on MN for that matter. My little dog gets his Sunday dinner, his own lamb chop and bits of whatever else we have. He loves carrots and broccoli. We get fish and chips once a week to eat at the seafront in the car. We take our dog and my son’s dog. I buy them an extra fish. They have special bowls in the car for the fish. I buy an Aldi turkey breast and cook it separately for the dogs and my son’s cats at Christmas.

Our dogs get chicken or steak most days on top of their usual evening meal. A couple of times a week they’ll also get veg and potato, so yes on Xmas day they get meat, veg and potato, all cooked separately so it’s not salty. I also bake them some treats and dog friendly cake so they don’t miss out. And they have the huge advent calendar from pets at home in the build up to the day and lots of new toys to open on Christmas morning.

johntorodesfatcheeks · 31/10/2025 16:48

Yes to both. Favourite parts are the oysters from a roast chicken, mash and gravy with carrots mashed up in it and broccoli.
her ears get pulled back in a scrunchie to avoid gravy ears. When I approach her holding the scrunchie her tail starts wagging like crazy as she knows what’s coming 😉

ainsleysanob · 31/10/2025 16:56

Of course we do!

😂😂

TBH, DH has always talked about his mother's persian cat who used to have a few sips of a post-church sherry and would then snooze the rest of the day away. .

The cat gets some turkey and carrots.

The dog gets turkey, carrots and potato

The guinea pigs get sprout leaves and peelings of veg. Also the carrots left for the reindeer.

All have a stocking and get gifts.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 31/10/2025 17:18

Watching my pet rats fall into a mountain of mashed potato, turkey and gravy is the highlight of the day for me 😁 🐀

Escapetothecatshome · 31/10/2025 17:21

Yes of course she gets a full mini Christmas dinner, one of the reasons I do so many pigs in blankets,
On Sundays she always gets roast from whatever we’re having, and to be honest daily my dad buys her roast beef slices. Luckily she’s quite easy as she will just eat what we’re having.
