Do teenage boys have sleepovers?

Hello! Would appreciate the experience of Mums who are further through the teenage years than me!

DS is 11, we are going to move house. I have been viewing houses and have various ‘nice to haves’ on my list. I keep thinking ‘oh that’ll be good if he has a sleepover’ or ‘hmm no room here for a sleepover’ - but is this even going to be much of a factor over the next ten years?

during the primary years he had his two close friends sleep over fairly regularly, but they have now all gone to different schools and found new friends so I doubt that will happen much.

obviously in late teen years he might have girlfriends or drunk friends staying over but that’s a different ball game.

in your experience, did your boys often have a friend to sleep over in secondary school?

Yes, around 1 per month / half-term

FYI, not a boy but I grew up in an absolutely tiny 2-bed house and shared a room with my sister and we still had sleepovers. So you don't need to worry your house will somehow hamper his social life - just be amenable to having your living room occasionally taken over, haha.

My ds did every weekend.

Bonus points if you have a garden room with table football and privacy for them to be themselves.

Nope, not a thing for us. Got 18yo and 15yo. They don't do sleepovers.

Chinsupmeloves · 31/10/2025 19:50

Most likely, though I'm not at that stage yet. Ds had cousins sleep over so far. Xx

my girls did a lot of sleepover even last month my 16 year old dd had her best friend overnight as they wanted to catch up as they go to different colleges and also my 11 year old ds had his best friend overnight last week to catch up as well as they go to different schools. And he also has one planned for November .

Yes, lots from Y8 onwards IME. We have a 1-bed annexe that they use, several friends have an office/gym/pod thingy or converted garage - useful for keeping pizza/crisps/gaming/coke-chugging contests away from the house.

In primary school there were a few sleepovers, always for a birthday. Now in secondary there are more sleepovers and not necessarily because of a birthday. Just hanging out in the school holidays. Now oldest DS is going to late parties and makes sense all the lads have a sleepover. We take in turns to host and have the late night.

Yes, lots of sleepovers, but they are less planned and spontaneous. We have a couple of air mattresses. They seem to be happy bunk down anywhere. Mainly gaming based but also televised live sports events. Need to be ready with snack food and drinks. You really do need a second bathroom/toilet! You need a place to retreat too for the evening - so either a decent bedroom or second living.

SoSoPredictable · 01/11/2025 03:50

God, yes, but rarely planned. It was always that things got too late, so they crashed at ours. And as others have said, it's coming down to a pile of shoes that lets you know. He's headed to Uni now, but they all still get together some weekends, sleeping in each other's dorms, so it obviously doesn't matter what space there is.

Flatandhappy · 01/11/2025 04:23

None of my kids liked sleepovers, we did have loads of kids around ours though through the teenage years - they just went home at the end of the evening,

Mothership4two · 01/11/2025 04:39

Mine did. One of them used to ask us to put the tent up in the Summer and we'd have a constant stream of friends coming over

ButtonMushrooms · 07/11/2025 11:57

Yes, I have three teens (2 boys and a girl) and they all sometimes have friends to stay over. As others have said, it's less likely to be one best friend as it was in primary school and more likely to be a group.
