Kebatu wasn't really "on the run"

Pebbles16 · 27/10/2025 18:41

This is annoying me because the media keep saying he was on the run but - as far as I can tell - he was let out under very strange circumstances (in prison tracksuit etc), is not a native English speaker and probably didn't have a complete understanding of what was happening.
At what point would a mistakenly released prisoner say "I think you have made a mistake"? Particularly one with limited understanding of the criminal justice system.
The crime he committed was terrible and I am glad he is being deported, but his mistaken release was not his fault and he didn't really go "on the run", just got on with the situation he was presented with.

Just on this, how can he be deported now? If the prison staff hadn’t mistakenly released him would he have been likely subject to deportation after he had completed his sentence?

They said on the news that he will be deported next week. He may have been due to be deported after he served his sentence, anyway.

BlindSpotForCats · 27/10/2025 19:25

Thing is- okay he committed diabolical offences, and should be in jail, and should probably be deported. But the prison had a duty of care to him. To release him with £76 and to just shoo him away- in the cold etc- that's a fast track to him coming to serious harm, possibly even death. That's a disgraceful set of affairs.

What a joke. It’s an example of how farcical our country now is.

The guy wanted to be deported, he said this when he was sentenced. He went back a few times to question why he was being released, and where are the people deporting him.

The bloke just went and sat on a bench wondering what to do. No man hunt, no down on the floor with your hands behind your back. Just a few Joe publics calling the police to say he was sitting on a park bench bemused.

In fact, this is a great deterrent not to get on a boat. Don’t go there, they are completely incompetent. They’ll detain you, then release you into the community in a jogging suit, with a tenner, no phone and tell you to make your way into London. You’ll end up on a park bench. That ought to put them off.

He’ll probably get a 3-bed semi and a 52” flat tv now after his ordeal. Some human rights lawyer friend of 2TK will already be on it.

This has made me think about other vulnerable prisoners, who are released, even after they have served their sentence. No wonder the rate of re offending is so high. Some of these people being released from prison, may not even have a roof over their head, waiting for them, on release.

LadyKenya · 27/10/2025 18:54

How would he know? Was he at home watching the news? He seemed to have no idea where he was, and was released without a clue where to go.

Also with limited English so even less likely to see any News outlets.

Ok, because that is what usually happens, right?

@ListOfQuestionsthey only detain people who actually get convicted of committing a crime. Many asylum seekers are not criminals they are just hoping for a better life.

He wanted to be deported. Of course he should have been kept in prison but it's not as if he deliberately escaped. The prison was at fault for letting him out with nowhere to go.

imogena · 27/10/2025 19:34

@LadyKenyayes many homeless are ex cons.
Also once asylum seekers are given refugee status they are kicked out of their accommodation and made homeless.

He was going to be deported and now they have him back he will be.

Griseleda · 27/10/2025 19:38

many of the somalians I used to work with couldn’t read or write so it may well be that he wouldn’t have been able to read a paper anyway

BlindSpotForCats · 27/10/2025 19:39

A few years back I was sitting in the waiting room of the local authority. A man was talking to the receptionist in some distress saying he had just been released from prison (we have a large prison near us) with £40 which was not even enough to get him a train fare back to his former home town.

He asked what was he meant to do? The receptionist t replied with 'we can give you a tent' and she went off and came back with a tent. It was clear that they had a storage room filled with tents. This was normal.

And how many of these people will have, or go on to have poor mental health, due to the circumstances that they find themselves in. I would hope that they have some type of checking in on them, once they have left prison, but I fear that I am being unreasonable, in thinking this.

ScrewyouJonathon · 27/10/2025 19:42

Exactly. What a monumental fuck up.

I volunteer with a Foodbank and quite a few of our clients are ex cons living in tents. One of them explained to me how he lived and I was actually quite impressed by how organised he was (now rehoused). Others less well organised and in a sorry state.

He did not rape anyone. That is the second time I've seen this accepted as fact on Mumsnet in two days. The hysteria around this case is wild. Yes what he did was totally disgusting and unacceptable but you can't possibly believe he deserves to die for it. Unless the media have whipped you up into such a frenzy that you do genuinely think he is a rapist 🙄

MikeRafone · 27/10/2025 19:44

It’s reported he tried to get back into prison, asked where and what was happening 🙈 he was told by prison guards to go away ffs

DiscoBob · 27/10/2025 19:44

He was confused as fuck most probably. They booted him out and directed him to the train station.

I can only imagine he was just wandering the streets of London, maybe trying to make contact with some people he knew in Finsbury Park?

He didn't escape or run away, he was freed. But with no money, no English, no geographic or cultural knowledge etc he couldn't have disappeared anywhere easily anyway.

I am sure Mr Farage will be happy with your vote.
He was not convicted of rape.
To wish death on someone is despicable.

He knew he was going to be deported. He does speak English, according to a witness who spoke to him . He could have found a cop shop and handed himself in.

He sexually assaulted a young school girl. Is that not enough for you?

He knew and then they told him to get a train. It would be confusing to be told to go, but anyone would. He couldn’t insist on being deported although did want to be.
