is it all from AI or is everyone losing the ability to write English?

OP posts:

If people wanna talk like that, what you gonna do?

Sorry. Couldn't resist 🤭

RessicaJabbit · 25/10/2025 20:29

There hardly new words.

ThejoyofNC · 25/10/2025 20:32

It's just people typing as they talk. I don't understand why some people expect everything to be written perfectly at all times. It's Mumsnet, not a bloody essay.

bitterexwife · 25/10/2025 20:34

Its actually I was ‘gonnoo’ - not gonna silly!

PaddlingSwan · 25/10/2025 20:39

I give you " has came" or any other similar permutations.

echt · 25/10/2025 20:40

It's not AI. On MN it's been around for several years. I find "wanna" and "gonna" irritating - they make the writer sound dim. I'm not being at all consistent here as other expressions don't bother me. Is it because they're essentially American?

ShenandoahRiver · 25/10/2025 20:42

Add in ‘tryna’ ..

youalright · 25/10/2025 20:43

I wanna agree with you but I'm afraid I'm gonna have to disagree

Shegotanology · 25/10/2025 20:47

I find myself judging people who use, lol. I find it really irritating, especially when used in a debate.

My new pet hate

Irenesortof · 25/10/2025 21:26

I don’t mind Americans doing it, but many brits don’t pronounce the words like this, so why write them?

Im English and absolutely say gonna and wanna in every day speech

EmeraldRoulette · 25/10/2025 21:29

I'm guessing you'll see a lot more of it because people are dictating their posts

So you'd have to make an effort to say want to and if you say wanna in speech, that's how it will come out in a post.

It makes posts far more difficult to read when they’re not in standard English.

I click away when it’s the OP, but it does annoy me!

Fair enough. I don’t but obviously some brits do.

Well you shoulda known better.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 25/10/2025 21:52

Nowhere near as irritating as the number of people who do not know the difference between the past tense and the past participle of sing, drink, sink, etc. Seems to be becoming the norm to use the past participle for everything, e g. "It sunk", "we drunk", etc.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 25/10/2025 21:53

Your thread title made me think of, "Shoulda, woulda, coulda".

Iwasneverafan · 25/10/2025 22:00

Prolly a post for pedants corner but I’ll raise you a “gotten” 🤷🏼‍♀️

JudgeBread · 25/10/2025 22:02

Says the person who didn't capitalise the first letter of their sentence. Honestly, have you just spent so much time online you've forgotten how to write English?

Gotten doesn't count. It's old English. Good enough for Shakespeare and all that

Wanna, gonna, shoulda are the new guys on the block.

Saw that horror for the first time just the other day.
OP, I’d add ‘kinda’ and ‘sorta’.
Of course I don’t judge people who write these abominations, do I?
(Take a guess…)
