is it all from AI or is everyone losing the ability to write English?

Where do these new words come from? Is it because we watch so much American TV now? I'm as guilty as anyone of that but I dont feel the urge to add 'wanna' or 'shoulda' to my vocabulary.

Hi @Brefugee
You opt to use the word "stuff" whilst complaining about others' use of "proper" language... Excuse me whilst I ROFL 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭

StrumpersPlunkett · 25/10/2025 22:40

I dislike 'gotten' I think it is lazy.
Also I have noticed my 18 year old and their friends have stopped saying I have been to or I bought, they now just say "been to town this afternoon." Or walked to the village 'I' seems to be missing. I find it irritating.

Also adding 'I'll take a coffee' when ordering a drink. argh!

Im English and absolutely say gonna and wanna in every day speech

OK!!

Apfelkuchen · 25/10/2025 23:10

‘Gunna’ is the worst imo

HonoriaBulstrode · 25/10/2025 23:14

I don't understand why some people expect everything to be written perfectly at all times.

It would take me longer to stop and think 'no, I won't write going to, I'll write gonna' than it takes just to type 'going to'.

In fact, whether I should write 'gonna' isn't a thought that ever enters my head.

Might just be where I grew up but “sank” instead of something drives me crazy! As in “I’ll give them sank to talk about”. 🤯

We had “summit” - better or worse?

A lot of contractions are "text speak" and can be less noticeable when spoken, depending on accent and context.

They come from the stress pattern of English. Unstressed syllables can become so brief and weakly articulated that they practically disappear, leaving just a short, central vowel sound that speakers mentally attach to the previous word.

Thanks, this is fascinating.

I mainly see wanna in the AI generated subtitles on social media ads.

‘If you wanna eat more vegetables…’ ‘if you wanna do handstands and inversions…’

I hated it already and it’s now given me an extra layer of distaste with the connotation of being hustled by egomaniacal instapreneurs.

Edited

‘Can I get a coffee’ is even worse.
