What do you think of tattoos to represent your children?

Might depend on whether you’re a tattoo kind of person or not, but would you/have you ever had a tattoo that represents your children? If so is it very literal eg. Their name/D.O.B or more abstract/creative? What do you think of tattoos that represent someone’s children in general?

I presume the child must be dead.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/10/2025 13:46

I have three stars to represent me and my Two dc. It was just us three for most of their lives.

tbh I don’t care what anyone else thinks of that. I did it for me and I love it. They are grown up now and it reminds me to be proud of myself as well as them because they are fabulous people!

Libre2 · 25/10/2025 13:46

DH tells the tale of following a fellow parent into reception of school and watching said parent roll up his sleeve to fill in a form with his child’s date of birth so, you know, practical I guess.

Personally, I think they are rough as rats.

I really like the idea of stars . I’m not keen on names or even worse pictures of said child/ ren

FirstdatesFred · 25/10/2025 13:50

Each to their own - I'd consider it if it was in a way that only I and they understood the significance.

Similar to the pp with the stars. If my daughters were up for getting matching ones I'd consider it.

KellsBells7 · 25/10/2025 13:51

Not keen. My children represent my children, I don’t really get why you need a tattoo as well. I’m not keen on many tattoos though so accept it may be a me thing.

GreenBlorgle · 25/10/2025 13:52

It seems a bit weird to me. I’m totally on board in theory with decorating your body, though I have no tattoos, but like a pp, it seems odd you would need to ‘remind yourself’ of living children by engraving something that represents them on your skin, and I would assume that a date of birth meant the child had died, and that the tattoo was commemorative.

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2025 13:52

Well, I'm not going to forget how many children I have, what they look like or their dates of birth so I don't really see the point. But then I dislike tattoos in general and would never have one, so I suppose my opinions irrelevant.

Just to add to the schmaltz, we all wear a bracelet with a star on it too!

And I am currently wearing a necklace that dd1 bought me for Mother’s Day that has our three birth stones in it. We are soppy and I don’t care.

HansHolbein · 25/10/2025 13:53

What do you think, OP?

Fairycakesandbumming · 25/10/2025 13:54

XH had ‘Chinese’ symbols to represent the dc. One of the many things that symbolised just how unsuited we were.

Not for me but whatever floats your boat.

EveningSpread · 25/10/2025 14:05

You should do whatever you want, but in my experience people who do this are not people I want to emulate.

DiscoBob · 25/10/2025 14:06

It makes me think they probably never see them.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 25/10/2025 14:11

DD has a flower name; I have that flower tattooed on me. I like getting tattoos and I like the way they look so 🤷‍♀️

Mistyglade · 25/10/2025 14:12

Horrible.

Mumofteenandtween · 25/10/2025 14:15

It depends if the parent is a good parent or not. Having your kid’s name put on your arm is not a substitute for reading The Gruffalo to them every night.

Mydogisagentleman · 25/10/2025 14:17

I like tattoos although I don't have any.
I'm not sure if it's still a thing, a woman I worked with had a pocket watch with the time of her child's birth, then the date, weight and name underneath.
She didn't memorialise her next 4

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 25/10/2025 14:18

Children’s names, or dates of birth, or a picture of them- agree with @Libre2comment “rough as rats”.

Something symbolic for you, like the stars that no one else could know was your dcs or the flower that’s their name, or something else that is a personal thing for you, ok if it’s also a nice tattoo.

OP are you thinking of getting one?

Megifer · 25/10/2025 14:24

I have a huge design of birds to represent me/DC. It took 2 full day sittings.

Wouldn't go for DOB or names as they arent my thing but if others like that then its literally none of my business so I dont tend to think anything.

Spookygoose · 25/10/2025 14:24

HansHolbein · 25/10/2025 13:53

What do you think, OP?

I like the idea but also agree with some PPs that dob’s/names/pictures are a bit tacky/unoriginal if I’m really honest but each to their own and all that. I’d like to find something very personal, not looking for ideas, was just interested in opinions. I like carefully thought out, good quality tattoos in general. I think my question is very age-dependent though, I think there’s a huge divide in how tattoos are viewed by the under 50s compared to over 50s say. I may be wrong but that’s just my experience.

That's more like it 👌. Stylish.

JoemarIerseyes · 25/10/2025 14:27

My friend had her daughters name in Hindu on her wrist. She is constantly having to explain its there because she had died. Awful for her really.

pictoosh · 25/10/2025 14:29

It's a loving sentiment and one that will last for life. However, whether or not the tattoo is well executed and looks good is up to the quality of the work. Most tattoos aren't up to much in that regard.
