What do you think of tattoos to represent your children?

Might depend on whether you’re a tattoo kind of person or not, but would you/have you ever had a tattoo that represents your children? If so is it very literal eg. Their name/D.O.B or more abstract/creative? What do you think of tattoos that represent someone’s children in general?

I associate it with the lower classes to be honest. You rarely see people with the name Rupert tattooed on them....it's usually Mason, Kai, Jayden type names.

Shocking 😱 we wouldn't want anyone thinking we're not U would we!!
/sarcasm

loulouljh · 25/10/2025 15:05

Done usually by absent dads...I hate them

NormasArse · 25/10/2025 15:10

I don’t think I’d like my name tattooed on someone’s body- not even my parents’, so I’m coming at it from that angle.

It’s enough that I have them as parents, and they love me.

I had considered a tiny Moominmamma to represent my mum after she died. I’m glad I didn’t though (we used to call her Moominmamma- it wasn’t just a random thing).

I have one for each of my kids. The first is an ace of hearts - DD's name begins with A, and the second is the chemical structure of a hormone that's effect is DS's name in latin. You wouldn't know what they represented if I didn't tell you.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/10/2025 15:20

I think they’re horrible.

CharlieKirkRIP · 25/10/2025 15:22

Good grief!

DD has a flower name; I have that flower tattooed on me. I like getting tattoos and I like the way they look so 🤷‍♀️

I have something very similar. First and foremost, it's a good tattoo, which also has a connection with my daughter, which she and I are aware of but which isn't obvious to a casual onlooker. Quite a few of my tattoos have similar connections to people who are special to me, but I don't have names and dates etc I do think that's a little bit... lacking in imagination but each to their own!

WanderingGiraffe · 25/10/2025 15:31

I think I’d rather spend the money on my kids than get a tattoo ‘for them’. Memorial tattoos are different obviously.

OffTheTable · 25/10/2025 15:33

I would never have any tattoo as I don’t like them. I’ve never seen one that I have thought looks nice but each to their own.

The only time I think much about them is when it’s someone, almost always a man, who hardly sees his children, but has their names and pictures tattooed on him. I just think what a nob. Also I knew someone that paid quite a lot of money to have their child’s name and face tattooed on their back just before Xmas one year. He was proudly showing it to people, yet I knew his wife was stressed out worrying about how they were going to afford Christmas for those children. Again, nob.

Moveoverdarlin · 25/10/2025 15:38

On the whole I think tattoos look really chavvy - they just make people look rough as fuck in my opinion. But I think tattoos of your children’s names catapults you in to a whole new league chaviness.

Funnily enough, of the women I know that have their children’s names forever inked on their person - they are all diabolical mothers. They’ve almost done it to reassure outsiders how much they love their children when their behaviour suggests otherwise.

Well, I’m as rough as a rat, then.

Me too😆

Why, are there only two ways to spend money? On your kids or on tattoos?

Hoppinggreen · 25/10/2025 15:43

I think they are tacky as fuck to be honest .
each to their own though

GrimDamnFanjo · 25/10/2025 15:48

Hmmm each to their own. I have a small symbol style tattoo in a concealed area. It involves flowers and leaves - the two flowers represent my daughters and the buds my children I miscarried.

It's so sad how quickly strangers can type a message on the internet without any thought and not care or realise that it can have a big impact on another stranger.

I am a tattooed mum. I have my son's name on me. According to this thread, I am rough as rats, chavvy, and now probably a diabolical mother too.

Mumsnet really often doesn't represent the actual world I live in. Where I can be highly respected in my career, live a good life, be a good friend, neighbour, daughter, colleague, boss, volunteer my time, and yet still be called all sorts of slurs on the internet because I got my son's name tattooed on me.

Better than being judgemental and narrow minded.

Mydadsbirthday · 25/10/2025 15:53

I don't have any, I think they look a bit tacky but each to their own.

However this thread reminded me that Brooklyn Beckham has a tattoo of his wife face and another of her eyes and also one of her grandmothers name as well as all kinds of other bizarre stuff.

SanFranBear · 25/10/2025 15:57

I have a star and a heart on my inner wrist which are my DC... I'm getting it extended into a much larger tattoo with other hearts and stars but those two will always be special

whattheysay · 25/10/2025 15:58

I have a couple of tattoos I had one when I was 49 the other when I was 50. One symbolises the children (no names) the other my husband. I got them because I wanted them and it’s no one else’s business. We’ll all be dead at some point (maybe soon) so do what makes you happy not what other people deem to be suitable.

Agreed. Although I reeeally wouldn’t worry about what the majority of people on MN think of you. It’s not exactly the epicentre of coolness or diversity or uniqueness 🤣

I wouldn’t have liked my parents to have tattoos representing me so I wouldn’t get any for my kids. Not against tattoos in general, the only reason I don’t have any is because I’m incapable of deciding on a design.

daydi · 25/10/2025 16:02

I have my daughter’s name and date of birth tattooed on me Smile they’re very small and dainty. I understand people think they are tacky but I love having her represented on myself. I find this sort of thing a form of self expression and like to have what I love on me for life. I only like small ones though, nothing big personally but each to their own!!

Who said that? The question was what do you think of tattoos to represent your children? I personally would rather spend money on something else for my kids than on a tattoo - in response to the question…

I have neither btw!

FrazzledHippy · 25/10/2025 16:06

I've got my daughter's birth flower worked into a selection of tattoos on my arm andd on my ankle I have two cute little elephants (my favourite animal),a mother and daughter
