1996 to 1999 full grant I paid nothing fir my uni education. I only took a loan in my 3rd year as my dad retired for fireservice so started drawing a pension as well as his civvy job so earned a lot more. I also got a job in the 3rd year. My grandparents also sent me quite a bit of money.

Did my PGCE in 2002 and that was also free plus bursary covered my student rent. I took a £3 loan that year as I couldn't work when training.

So sad for my kids they'll be in so much debt if they choose to go to uni!

Late 80s. I think it was £600 a term. And patents were supposed to give £200 a year. They couldn’t afford to. Jobs were easy to get though.
Rooms (in Manchester) were £15-25 a week for a grotty terrace. But you could claim housing benefit in the summer holiday. People would do that and bugger off backpacking and sublet to students who were staying.

1985-1988 Scotland, fees were paid and had a grant of just over £2k a year, commuted to uni and we could also claim back our travel expenses at the end of the year which was about £350/year.

Paid parents £15/week dig money out of my grant. I got a job at a supermarket, Sunday for 4 hours and got paid double time which was around £20-£25ish.

@Kittencuddler You have to view money from taxpayers (grants and awards) as many poor people contributing to others (students) to largely attain higher salaries than they could ever dream of. Hence many parents didn’t pay anything for their student dc.

What must be considered is around 19% of school leavers went to university in 1990. Now it’s nearer 38% and the student has a loan - the state backs the loans to the tune of £230 billion. Someone always pays. Currently state, student and parent! Cannot see that changing.
