Just curious how it compares

95 to 99 (Scottish Uni), nothing. Parents were very generous when I was "behaving", less so when I argued with my father about politics. Good months I got around £600 a month from them and even when we weren't speaking they always covered my accommodation.

Second year onwards I had 7 hours a week on the checkout in Tescos plus every third Sunday at double pay and I picked up extra hours whenever I could. I also did some tutoring and babysitting for various lecturers offspring.

1994-1997. 700 a term and parents gave me 500.

I worked throughout: an opticians, a cutlery factory (this was Sheffield!) and when I went home I worked like a dog every day I was off in Next, usually helping with the sales. The money I made in holidays kept me going.

I was always so skint!

1998 got about £1000 next year about £500 then nothing the third year. Got a full student loan of about £10k for the 3 years. Parents paid my rent, I worked in the holidays at home and at uni in years 2 & 3

I went to uni from 1986-1991. I was married with a toddler. I can’t recall how much grant I got but I do know it worked out similar to what I was earning before that as a civil servant! I got more for being a parent and more for being over 25 plus my dd had a free place in the student nursery. I also get 5 years grant as I changed my course at the end of the 1st year.

95 to 98, £1700 for the first two years, £1200 in the third as it wasn't supposed to cover summer. My parents topped up £50 per week as I wasn't allowed to work in term time, i did in the holidays. The also paid my rent but that was about 40 per week.....

95-98 also, I got a grant of 1500 a year in the first and second years; I had a loan of around 1500 an year and my parents gave me an additional 500-ish per term, so if I recall correctly I lived on a bit less than £4,500 a year. My rent cost around £750 a term and I had about £750 a term to pay for all other expenses including food, travel, clothes, social life, books, etc. I didn’t feel too poor at all in those years, though I did in my third year. In the third year my parents’ income had gone up and I didn’t get a grant at all, but they also didn’t give me any more money, so I ended up with a chunky overdraft and credit card debt to fill in the gap. At my uni you were not allowed to work during term time: I did have jobs working in a cafe and a shop during the holidays, but they paid very little (this was pre-minimum wage and employers could pay almost nothing and get away with it!) so I couldn’t really make enough money to make a significant difference for the university term.

I left owing £4500 in student loans, which is tiny compared to the debt of today’s graduates.

And grant from N Ireland of 2k
Insane !!!

My wonderful brain got awarded a full flipping scholarship

Insane !!!!

So in total I would say I had maybe 9k of a loan for all that education
This was mostly for my undergrad days ( I took 3k out to help my sister buy her house)

Very lucky

Tagliateriroa · 24/10/2025 18:11

92-95 nothing at all

BarbieKew · 24/10/2025 18:18

Didn’t get a grant but I think the student loan (repayable) that year was about £700.

I found my halls of residence invoice for 1992 recently - just over £900 for the YEAR!

pitterypattery00 · 24/10/2025 18:20

Went 97-01. No grant due to parental income (which wasn't that high - part time nurse and full time newly qualified teacher). I stayed at home and my parents gave me £80 per month - about £50 went on my monthly bus pass. Usually took a packed lunch from home so didn't spend anything else during day. Worked most of my summer/Christmas holidays. My friends were all in a similar position - we still managed to have a lot of fun. Could do a whole night out for £10-£15 including nightclub entry and shared taxi home - 50p vodka and coke, £1 pints. Those were the days!

DemonsandMosquitoes · 24/10/2025 18:22

Around 1994/5. I got around £800 per term. I had just qualified as a nurse but went off to uni to do an unrelated degree ft. So was still living at home, given a grant and working weekend nights as a nurse on the bank. Very comfortably off tbh for someone in their early 20’s.

Netcam · 24/10/2025 18:27

1988 to 1993, I got a full grant for 5 years, art foundation course (discretionary grant), degree, PGCE. I can't remember how much it was, maybe about £2000 to £2500, but at the time it was only based on my mum's income, even though she had remarried.

I also worked in the holidays.

Student loans for my DS now are based on household income, even if household member isn't their parent.

Notateacheranymore · 24/10/2025 18:28

1994-1998. Two yrs in Luton, 2 in Brighton. Got £90 a year first two, parents paid my rent start each semester and gave me £120/month. Worked for my dad the first 2 summers, was wedding planning the 3rd summer and got married straight after 4th year. That annual grant didn’t even cover my textbooks, as it was paid termly!!!

tripleginandtonic · 24/10/2025 18:30

Full grant and took the maintenance loan in my last year.

HailtotheBop · 24/10/2025 18:32

91-94 full grant due to parent being out of work. The yearly total was £2200. Rent took up most of my grant, so I worked in the holidays and during term time during years 1 & 2. Couldn't work in year 3 as I was abroad for some of it as part of my course (languages). Got back, wrote my dissertation and started work again almost straight away. Still managed to enjoy myself though!

Wow 😮 those were the days!

graduated in1989 with no debt I had a maximum grant. I was out several times a week and money really wasn’t a concern.

Also a degree actually gave you a real leg up then as it meant something

It’s disgusting what kids are confronted with now.

AmethystAnnotation · 24/10/2025 18:38

Early 90s. I didn't qualify due to parents' income - not that they earned masses but we were over the threshold. My dad gave me £1000 a term which had to cover my accommodation plus all living costs. I was OK on that amount, though I seemed to live off toast, powdered soup, cheese, rice, baked beans and tinned tomatoes. Basic food was much cheaper in those days.

I think I wore more or less the same set of clothes the whole time I was a student, whereas some students seemed to have loads of money to buy new clothes. I definitely only had one coat for the three years. However, I didn't get into debt, which was the main thing I was worried about. I feel sorry for students nowadays who are landed with tuition fees to repay however frugally they live as students.

I was 21 when I went to uni (92 - 96) and so I was classed as an 'independent' student. I think I got £800 - £900 a term. In my first year, I paid £25 a week for a tiny boxroom. Four years later, I was paying £38.50 pw. I remember thinking that was extortionate!

I temped every summer holiday, and always managed to clear any overdraft and go back to uni with a healthy bank balance.

This was really similar to me, I went when I was 24 in 1993.

Cousinchat · 24/10/2025 18:53

1992 - none, my parents were teachers and earned too much

no loans either

BiddyPopthe2nd · 24/10/2025 18:57

None. Large family but the working parent earned too much. Parents covered a lot early on, and I worked summers and pt in my final year, and also covered my own fees in final year (there were 3 of us at 3rd level by then).

Disasterclass · 24/10/2025 19:07

None as parental income was too high. But I did a course that had a year abroad and friends that got a grant got the airfare and insurance paid for with an additional grant top up. Agree about living more frugally. Everyone worked in the holidays but not many in term time

Squirrelsnut · 24/10/2025 19:11

91 to 94. Small grant. I was paying back my loans until my mid 30s.

16HamstersCalledThemAllDave · 24/10/2025 19:18

Full grant 1991 - 1994, then one loan of £795 in final year 1995. Finished paying it back at £5 a month in approx 2001 😁

WorthyOpalZebra · 24/10/2025 19:19

I was an uni from 94 to 97, no grant for me due to parental income but I recall my flatmate got £1k a term because it was London. Halls were £50 a week self catering (catered was £65 a week) and my dad gave me £100 a month. I got the full loan and worked in a pub to make to the difference. I do remember being either flat broke or flush enough to go shopping at Topshop on Oxford Street depending on how many shifts I'd done. Food was relatively plentiful as it coincided with Tesco value beans being 3p and a loaf of bread was 10p. I think they were in a price war with Kwiksave.

I seem to recall grants were based on parental income, not household, so a few friends got a full grant because their parents were divorced. Some had very well off step parents but their income didn't count.
