WIBU to get a train just to stock up at Booths for Christmas?

I love Booths and I haven’t been for a while. Unfortunately we don’t have one locally, just Waitrose(Which I also love) but I’m considering making a run to Booths and stocking up on their Christmas food, a few gifts and general bits. Partly for the fun of it and partly because I want to treat myself and family. There’s also a favourite deli of mine nearby that I could get some bits from too.

The train takes about 1 hour 20-30, Booths is 5 minutes walk from the train station and I’m 3 minutes walk away from the train station when I get home.

Would this work if I take cool bags and cool packs? I don’t drive so that isn’t an option.

You aren’t being unreasonable but I wouldn’t be able to carry enough if I did a trip like that! I think you’d be frustrated and compromising.
there are some lovely farm shops and delis that do mail order. That may on this occasion be better option for you.

I have a shopping trolley(Not the metal supermarket ones. I’m not that weird) that I was planning on taking.

Never unreasonable to enjoy Booths. I'm trying to guess which one you'd go to now, if it's so close to the station. Windermere?

I need to go to my local one and get a Christmas book now!

Penrith. My favourite is the Keswick branch but I’d have to get a bus too.

I love booths and was gutted they have closed my closet one (Ripon). I drive so am probably going to have a day trip to Keswick or Penrith to get my fix and will likely miss the Christmas book this year.
I love their mince pies & cheese selection.

TheNightingalesStarling · 22/10/2025 14:25

Why not? Are there any other nice shops while you are there?

Irenesortof · 22/10/2025 14:36

Why not? Jolly good idea.

Ponderingwindow · 22/10/2025 14:39

I drove home from the grocer 40 minutes away last week. That is just my normal. If you add in insulated bags you will be fine.

EerieDecoration · 22/10/2025 14:42

I think it will be fine too. Just envious as it would be many hours on the train and about £150 return for me.

JohnBullshit · 22/10/2025 14:49

Same here, @EerieDecoration . I like the Booths in Ulverston myself, but the one in Penrith would do nicely, if I could afford the fare/time/petrol, and still have the energy and funds left over to actually do some shopping.

There are yes. There’s a few shops I could get some nice bits from too.

Ouch! Train prices are ridiculous I agree. I’m sorry that it’d be so ridiculously expensive for you. I’m lucky because I can get a return trip for under £20 but the prices are crazy for some other destinations.

Do it! Sounds like quite a fun little excursion.

Yodeldodeldo · 22/10/2025 15:02

If it makes you happy, do it and make a day of it. It's a pretty harmless way to get your thrills!

chalkpaint · 22/10/2025 15:10

Nah not at all do it !
I regularly drive about 45 minutes, wait in a queue to go through passport control into another country. And then do the same on the way back all for my favourite snacks 🤣 takes me probably about 3 hours depending on border queue.
Spain to the Morrisons in Gibraltar btw because I realise it sounds more exciting than it actually is 😂

BoothsRun · 22/10/2025 15:10

Thanks all. I think that I’ll do it. I mentioned it to a friend who looked at me as though I had grown a second head and said that the food would be spoiled but I don’t think that it should be if Booths is my last stop and if I take plenty of cool bags/Ice packs.

I think that I’ll do another Keswick trip another time as I do love their market and I could get some lovely Christmas gifts there too.

This is how exciting my life is, that this is the highlight of my month but I am actually really looking forward to it. I just need to make a list now of items that I don’t want to miss out on.

I sometimes send DH with a cool bag when he's working in Scotland so he can bring home some proper sausage. Converted him as well. Its a four hour drive home.

Only in winter though.

HotTiredDog · 22/10/2025 15:59

Excellent idea, though I’d take a couple of huge suitcases. Add a few ice packs and / or towels if you need to insulate, but as it’s only a short trip the temp should be fine.

eta - you think you’ve got problems with a visit to Booths being the peak of excitement? Some of us lot are getting giddy just commenting on your idea!

muddyford · 22/10/2025 16:04

A friend near Liverpool sends me the Christmas book. I'm in the southwest but when I lived near Preston I shopped at Booth's. So envious of you all!

EerieDecoration · 22/10/2025 16:15

Just checked. If I wanted to go tomorrow that would be 5 hours each way and £164 <weeps>

Maybe later and a pre booked ticket might be cheaper?

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 22/10/2025 16:20

Stop it! I'm beyond jealous!😉
Do it OP, it makes me happy just thinking about it 🥰

Adooree · 22/10/2025 16:21

Just got home from my local ( Keswick ) they also have their Christmas food book in store ( stacks of them ) so I should imagine all of them has them as well .

Contraryjane · 22/10/2025 16:38

I live in Booths Land. I love it but moved here three years ago from Surrey. I miss Waitrose, and Ocado deliveries.
