WIBU to get a train just to stock up at Booths for Christmas?

I love Booths and I haven’t been for a while. Unfortunately we don’t have one locally, just Waitrose(Which I also love) but I’m considering making a run to Booths and stocking up on their Christmas food, a few gifts and general bits. Partly for the fun of it and partly because I want to treat myself and family. There’s also a favourite deli of mine nearby that I could get some bits from too.

The train takes about 1 hour 20-30, Booths is 5 minutes walk from the train station and I’m 3 minutes walk away from the train station when I get home.

Would this work if I take cool bags and cool packs? I don’t drive so that isn’t an option.

I’d definitely do that! My husband suggested a night away somewhere north so we could shop at Booths for Christmas, our nearest is at least 2 hours each way and it’s a long time since we have shopped at one

Can you pre order anything you definitely want to get, just in case you get there and they don’t have exactly what you want? I find they’re very helpful when I call to see if they have random items I want!

Sounds lovely OP, nice lunch out as well.

What's the London equivalent of Booths?

FrenchandSaunders · 22/10/2025 16:52

or isn't there one 🤔

Gatekeeper · 22/10/2025 16:55

I bloody love Booths and was gutted when I pulled into the car park at Ripon the other week and IT-WAS-CLOSED!!!
Had to trundle to Kendal and it wasnt as nice but still enjoyed my fix.

I've got 2 Booths within 25mins and am already planning the best time to go child free for a little look !

Gatekeeper · 22/10/2025 17:04

Make sure you apply for a Booths card. Me and dh got £3.50 off coffee and bacon sarnie with it in the cafe

Perfectlypea · 22/10/2025 17:06

What’s the difference between Waitrose and Booths? I’m in SE and as far as I know we don’t have any down here.

IAmKerplunk · 22/10/2025 17:13

What is Booths? I am midlands and have never heard of it but now know I need to visit one

FoFanta · 22/10/2025 17:22

Can you find a friend (who drives) who would also enjoy it and offer to pay for petrol and make a social occasion of it? I would absolutely love this as a wee jaunt but alas I am in a Booths free country...

moggiek · 22/10/2025 17:26

I’m in Scotland, but was down in Keswick for a few days last week. LOVE Booths, always have. Have passed my passion on to one of my DDILs, who like me has to be dragged out kicking and screaming 🤣🤣

OnlyOnAFriday · 22/10/2025 17:29

Do they not still do nationwide Xmas delivery? I’ve definitely had a Xmas delivery from them before and am hours away from the nearest store.

I love booths and was gutted they have closed my closet one (Ripon). I drive so am probably going to have a day trip to Keswick or Penrith to get my fix and will likely miss the Christmas book this year.
I love their mince pies & cheese selection.

They've closed the Ripon branch??? Bastards.

GameOfJones · 22/10/2025 17:41

Definitely do it, sounds like a lovely day trip.

I'm originally from Oop North but now live in Berkshire. We are travelling up to visit family before Christmas and will definitely be stocking up at Booths before we drive home. Southerner DH is also fully converted so has already been perusing the Booths online Christmas catalogue to see what he wants. 🤣

It's the Northern supermarket equivalent of Waitrose but better as far fewer stores and they tend to champion local produce more than the national supermarkets.

profpoopsnagle · 22/10/2025 17:42

I would so do this! Has it got a cafe? You could peruse first, then have a cafe stop, then go and fill a trolley.

We're not near Booths but often stopped at Ripon if we were heading in that direction. So sad it's closed. We are heading North West next week and one of my tasks is to pick up a couple of Booth Christmas books.

Lindy2 · 22/10/2025 17:44

Yes do it. Make a day of it and have a lovely lunch too.

I'm in Surrey but love going into Booths when we go to the Lake District.

For those asking, Booths is like a posh Waitrose/M&S with an old fashioned family feel to it as well. Expensive but lovely.

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 22/10/2025 17:46

That sounds fab. I’m always wondering what Booths are like. That’s the kind of thing I would do although it’s an hour quicker for me going by car and that would still be two and a half hours!
Enjoy, make a day of it. Relax on the train, meal in the cafe, treat yourself

Elbowpatch · 22/10/2025 17:50

E. H. Booth was our local grocer when we lived up North. It wasn’t a supermarket then. My mother had a delivery every week.

I didn’t realise they were still trading.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 22/10/2025 17:56

Laughing at the idea that Waitrose comes anywhere near the league of Booths. Honestly.

I have my catalogue from my parents but doubt I'll be in range to buy sadly.

Don't forget your fudge from the Toffee Shop.

Noooooo, it's not a Waitrose equivalent. It's far nicer!

Love Booths. I also have 2 within 15-25 minutes of here. I've booked a collection for Christmas Eve. My mum and dad are newly up north this Christmas. Mum has gone mad on Booths ordering for Christmas! Xmas Grin

GameOfJones · 22/10/2025 17:58

I agree it's nicer than Waitrose (although that upsets me to say as I'm now hours away from a Booths 🤣). I think Waitrose is the best comparison though for someone that's never been inside a Booths.

I’ll have him if you ever divorce

QueenOfCastille · 22/10/2025 18:03

Do it, OP. If not for your sake then do it for mine!

:-)
