Can I get any tech to help stop me speeding?!

I have three points on my licence.

I live in Wales and have just got a speeding notice when I was travelling at night in the dark from an event on back roads. I have been caught in a 20 mph area. I probably did not see the 20mph sign in the dark and my sat nav has not always updated from 30mph to 20mph, especially in more remote areas.

Is there any tech to stop me from speeding? Thanks.

A brain.

Does Google maps show speed limits?

But you should ve able to see road signs at night!

Your eyes?

Does your car not have cruise control or a limiter?
put your phone’s sat bag on for every journey, and set the speed alarms so it warms you when the speed changes.

MidlandsGal1 · 21/10/2025 11:41

Any basic sat nav or even google maps on your phone will tell you.

CryMyEyesViolet · 21/10/2025 11:42

In Wales 20 is the default, so drive 20 on any road with street lights until you see a sign telling you a different speed limit.

If no street lights, then 60 on a single carriage way and 70 on a dual carriage way.

If it’s the 20 vs 30 catching you out, just stop assuming it’s a faster speed limit than 20 until something definitively tells you otherwise.

I use the Waze app. It was discussed a lot when I was taking a speed awareness course 😀

I have quite an old car, I don't even know what a cruise control or limiter is - can someone explain?

And how do I set speed alarms on the sat nav?

Any help gratefully received.

Its not uncommon for the Sat Nav to tell you that its 30 in Wales though, when its 20.

As I was travelling back roads which change from 60 when going through built up areas, I think it must have gone to 30 and then 20, and I saw it going to 30 but missed the change down again to 20,

You could try something like the Road Angel:

https://www.roadangelgroup.com/products/pure-sync-smart-road-safety-speed-awareness-assistant-with-camera-alerts

But you should be able to see the road signs even at night.

Thanks!

thanks, what is this?

It's an app. Called Waze.

Ihateboris · 21/10/2025 11:53

It's a free app that warns you of upcoming speed limits/cameras etc.

So is it different in some way from google maps?

Probably very similar. Try it.

What I think would be useful would be
a) something to tell me when speed limits have changed.
b) something to alarm me when I go over a certain speed.

Waze is brilliant, best way to start is download it and put in a journey that you know well. It shows what the speed is as you travel with a red marker if you are travelling faster.

It also warns you of any problems up ahead and gives alternative routes.

Recently set it up for an elderly friend and he was so thrilled with how easy it was to use he was recommending it to all and sundry at the bowls club!

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 21/10/2025 12:05

No human or machine can tell accurately when speed limits change. My car sees speed limit signs and sometimes it gets it wrong.

If you have a good knowledge of the area, you tend to know what roads are what speeds. But that knowledge is useless if the limits suddenly change, so you just have to keep your eyes peeled.

I've never gone over the speed limit because I tend to spend a lot of time checking signs and looking at my speedometer to make sure I'm not going over. It's quite dangerous considering your focus should be on the road, but that's modern life it seems.

Thundertoast · 21/10/2025 12:08

Is there a reason you cant look out for road signage and keep an eye on your speedometer? As if you cant do these.... then do you maybe need to be honest with yourself and ask yourself if you should be driving at all?

fairislecable · 21/10/2025 12:08

You can set an audible alarm when you go over the limit.

ChickalettasGiblets · 21/10/2025 12:09

If you need help seeing signs in the dark, you need to go to Specsavers OP. If it’s not an area you know, surely you should be taking more care to check the signs!!

PrincessASDaisy · 21/10/2025 12:09

Another vote for Waze. It updates really well in terms of changing speed limits.

ImWearingPantaloons · 21/10/2025 12:11

I’d recommend Waze too, just make sure you have an appropriate holder for your phone so it’s up on the dash and within your line of vision.

Either that or just move? The constantly fluctuating speed limits in Wales (40 to 20 to 30 to 20 to 40) on the route to my friends house absolutely do my nut in.
