Can I get any tech to help stop me speeding?!

I have three points on my licence.

I live in Wales and have just got a speeding notice when I was travelling at night in the dark from an event on back roads. I have been caught in a 20 mph area. I probably did not see the 20mph sign in the dark and my sat nav has not always updated from 30mph to 20mph, especially in more remote areas.

Is there any tech to stop me from speeding? Thanks.

Some of these posts are so stupid. Some people, like me, have to drive hours a day, including through cities with a lot of cameras. It becomes almost inevitable that unless you have cruise control or are able to concentrate perfectly at all times (who does that?) that you risk getting a ticket, as often zones are changed without any attention, I got caught in one that changed from 40 to 30 overnight with a lovely hidden camera, yes, they did put up a new sign hidden in the trees, which I saw when I retraced my steps, but it wasn't clear at all.

This problem is not solved at all by people saying 'use your eyes'. If that were the case, the councils would not be making so much money. It is possible to drive safely and sensibly and still occasionally go over a limit, and where the limit is 20, that can be as little as by 3 miles an hour, hardly the same as going 80 on the motorway.

Also, a new type of camera has been invented which not only measures the time you are doing as you pass, but records you coming up to and away from it for a long vision ahead. This captures a lot more people.

Let the fines commence!

What car do you have and what age? It may have cruise control… Google the symbol and see if you have it near your steering wheel. But some cars don’t let it kick in at 20mph which isn’t ideal for wales. Additionally, look through your settings. I’ve had 2015 cars that beeped at a speed I set. Cars after 2024 beep if you’re speeding (higher than the speed it thinks you should be going)

I use cruise control extensively so I don’t have to think about it or focus on other things (like road signs or not running kids over) and not realise I’m doing enough over to get a ticket. (Say what you want, it happens to everyone) I really recommend it.

waze is definitely helpful. No other tips.

Which county was this? The camera may have been obscured but there should be signs warning that there are speed cameras leading up to the actual camera. It’s very rare for people not to be given a period of grace with just a warning letter for any offences when a camera is first installed, usually for a couple of months.

I use the Waze app. It was discussed a lot when I was taking a speed awareness course 😀

Me too - it tells me the exact speed I’m going.

Cruise control is definitely your go-to bit of the car. Google your model of car and search for it - it’s probably a toggle on the steering wheel with an icon of the speedometer and a line at about ten o’clock on the dial.

We have two cars with cruise control. One will work at 20 which is a godsend in Wales, the other one won’t work below 35.

Plenty of sat navs will beep if you're speeding. I had a horrendous experience with one on the motorway when it thought it was a 50 but it wasn't anymore.. but I couldn't turn it off as I didn't want to pull over to sort it. It is effective when it behaves though!

Agree some posters are being very unfair to OP. It’s a real problem in wales and a quick google would explain.

even local residents are bamboozled by the 20mph limit and areas.

we have them in central towns and villages Scotland, but wales does seem to have a huge issue with boundaries and area. Hope the apps people have suggested help OP.

What I think would be useful would be
a) something to tell me when speed limits have changed.
b) something to alarm me when I go over a certain speed.

The problem with this is
(a) its not always accurate. There is no replacement for reading the signs and watching the road.
(b) the police will not admit any defence of “the satnav/ speed device was wrong”

I don’t think the OP is looking for a replacement for reading the signs and watching the road. Just something to give her a nudge on the odd occasion she misses one.

So is it different in some way from google maps?

Yes. It's called waze, not google maps
