And how old are they?

Mine and 6 and 8 and I am wondering if they are doing not enough / too many!

My 4 year old does swimming, ballet and football!

NotNormally · 21/10/2025 19:58

DS6 (in Y2) does:
Judo
Beavers
swimming
second martial arts club
drama (45 mins after school)
multi sports after school club (45mins after school, this is cheaper than the regular after school club!)

He also enjoys cycling so in fine weather we find plenty of time for some long bike rides.

He isn’t pretty much bang in the middle for his school attainment.

My 8 year old does something most nights, and would fill her entire week with clubs if i let her - she has ADHD and really struggles with sleep so tiring her out physically is necessary. i keep one evening a week and one weekend day completely free for her though as she needs to learn to entertain herself.

My younger two are 6 and 4 and do swimming and football - they would rather come straight home after school and play out than go to clubs.

At 6 & 8yo, my DCs were both doing recreational gymnastics (1hr/wk), Beavers/Cubs, and competitive swimming (6yo 1hr/wk, 8yo 3hrs/wk). The 8yo also saw a tutor once a week for 45 mins, but I'm not sure that counts as an extracurricular as it was to give additional support due to SEN needs rather than for fun! (Although she did/does enjoy going).
The youngest is now 9yo, and she currently does karate (1hr/wk), Cubs (1.5hrs/wk), and still swims competitively (3hrs/wk plus comps approx. once a month).

My 8 year old does a couple of school clubs straight after school and dance on the weekend. Plus two evening youth clubs.

17caterpillars1mouse · 21/10/2025 20:31

Dd9 does cubs and Brownies

Dd7 does rainbows, beavers, swimming, climbing and running club

mrssunshinexxx · 21/10/2025 20:32

1 year old swimming and a music class
3 year old gymnastics swimming and horse riding
5 year old swimming horse riding piano and x country

sanityisamyth · 21/10/2025 20:36

Ds11 does Scouts, tennis, swimming, shooting, taekwondo and two after school clubs.

Aged 8 he also did horse riding (own pony), ice skating, scuba diving and cricket.

coxesorangepippin · 21/10/2025 20:53

Dd does hockey twice per week, Thursday and Saturday

DS does scouts and basketball, that makes one evening and one weekend morning

It's enough. And I wouldn't have considered doing this much when they were younger.

coxesorangepippin · 22/10/2025 02:03

Some of these are insane!

Baital · 22/10/2025 02:31

Primary and early years of secondary, dance class 2x per week and Brownies/Scouts 1x

Later secondary 10-12 hours per week.of dance classes, because she wanted to. She earned some of them by working as an assistant to her dance teacher with the younger ones.

But it has been led by her. She is very outgoing and wants to be 'doing stuff'. I was the opposite and loved being in my own world and reading a lot.

Offer choices and let your child decide.

Sootyb · 22/10/2025 02:38

DD7
Mon Swimming
Wed Cheer
Thurs Gymnastics

BabyToothbrush · 22/10/2025 02:47

My 7yo currently does:

  • swimming (private provider) one weekday evening
  • French club at a school lunch time
  • Cricket at school straight after school - this is free
  • Performing arts on a weekend morning in term time

However the cricket only runs this half term so that will be lost after the break.

SunnyKoala · 22/10/2025 03:03

8 year old does swimming, boys brigade and football every week

Extra stuff ad hoc has been Junior park run some weeks, a couple of five week sailing courses, some half terms of an after school sports club which changes each time.

I think he's very lucky and gets a lot. I am over compensating a bit as his siblings are quite a bit older and he doesn't have neighbouring children to play with. The norm is definitely less. I'm not sure how people have the resources to do as much as many have written here. I can barely afford a weekly exercise class for myself.

MellowPinkDeer · 22/10/2025 05:57

They used to do all sorts, street dance, ballet, cheer, choir, swimming. Now we do ice skating (twice a week) off ice training once a week and a riding lesson once a week , but we have a horse so someone rides everyday in addition. We couldn’t fit in anything else , we’re all shattered as it is!

MinnieMountain · 22/10/2025 06:16

We have the rule that DS (11) has to do at least 1 sport and 1 school club. He does hockey and IT club.

kezzykate · 22/10/2025 06:33

My ds (10) is in a swimming club so swims for an hour 3x a week. Other than this he only does cubs and one hour of tutoring. My dd (8) does brownies, swimming and dance and an hour of tutoring. Neither of them like clubs really and would rather be at home so I make sure we don’t do anything at the weekend so they get downtime and we can have day trips//family time. It has taken for them to get good at their sports activities to enjoy them too, they go happily now but when they were less able they always wanted to stay at home. I am a bit jealous when i hear how other peoples children would happily do more and more, it has never been the case for us.

Moglet4 · 22/10/2025 06:48

4 children so quite a lot:
Mon - Brownies for 8yo
Wed - piano for 11yo
Thurs - karate for 11yo and 8yo
Sat - gymnastics for 14yo, 11yo, 8yo
Sun - dancing for 11yo, 8yo, 4yo, singing lesson for 11yo
oldest 3 do instrumental lessons at school
11 and 14yo speech and drama at school
11yo does football and 2 dance clubs and choir at school
8yo choir at school
4yo will start karate, gym and rainbows next year.

My 14 year old does volleyball - 3 times a week training plus matches about once a month. She also does DnD club once a fortnight.

My 7 year old wants to do everything!
He does football in the summer twice a week plus matches, ice hockey in the winter twice a week plus matches (both are on Mondays and Wednesdays and they overlap in spring and autumn which is an issue)
He does wrestling on Tuesdays and wants to compete in that too but he's only just started so I'll wait and see what his coach thinks about that.
Scouts on Thursdays and Circus School on Fridays. These are all evening activities (well circus school starts at 4 which isn't really evening but outside of school anyway)

He also does a multisport club on Tuesday afternoons when he's in afterschool club anyway (bus picks him up from school and brings him back afterwards, which is very handy. Will even drop off at home if we want!) Where he's done volleyball the last few weeks, will do ice hockey next and after that futsal. This club is completely free and includes a snack and homework time, which is absolutely amazing.

Luckily none of these are too expensive yet for DS, and he's able to borrow all his hockey gear from the club which saves a huge amount of money as the gear is expensive, but DD's volleyball costs a lot, club fees are nearly 200 euros, license and insurance together cost nearly 300 and there's 70 euros a month subs to her team itself.
