Do you mean the bit about Belgium asking for legal cover and being concerned about Russian retaliation?

I'm sorry, I don't have any special thoughts, other than its very frustrating not to be able use the frozen Russian assets?

The post at 12:38? Sadly a very succinct summing up of where we are.
Putin seems determined to push on regardless of cost and Trump seems to have lost interest now the Noble Peace Prize is off the table.
It’s funny I thought he was going to stop this war within 24hours of taking office, we’re grinding towards 4 years now.
Many in Europe also seem to have lost interest, and most elections on the continent are showing a swing to the right which the Kremlin must be loving.

blueshoes · 08/11/2025 19:45

However the economic situation may cause this slow creep to come to a halt.

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar This.

I had linked to the wsj article on 'As Putin Digs In, a Long—and Different—War With Ukraine Looms' below. Re-quoting: "Kyiv’s theory of victory now increasingly rests on the growing power of Ukrainian long-range strikes against Russia’s oil-and-gas infrastructure, the lifeblood of Putin’s war machine. ...
The Ukrainian strategy, as funny as it may seem, is the mirror image of Russia’s strategy: to do everything possible that Russia’s economy collapses before the Ukrainian economy, and at the same time to hope to achieve through diplomatic negotiations what it can’t achieve on the battlefield.”

Russia is apparently doing very badly on the battlefield, although their propaganda machine will have you believe otherwise. Ukraine's drones are a significant impediment to Russia's progress which has led to them resorting to using small groups of infantry to break through as Russia has largely run out of tanks. Pokrovsk has taken them 2 years to get to this point and massive losses. What Russia cannot achieve on the battlefield, they lob missiles at civilians to break the will of the Ukrainian people. [Apologies to others more knowledgeable if I oversimplify]

I am supporting a volunteer in Kharkiv on the ground. He writes "This isn't the first year of the war, so our will cannot be broken, we will stand firm. Without light, without water, without heat, as long as there is no Russia and no Russians."

The Ukrainian people are exhausted but they don't give up. It looks bleak but let's continue to support them through raising awareness through this thread and donations if you can and any other way you can think of. Slava Ukraini!

LlttledrummergirI · 08/11/2025 21:12

I think at the moment fatigue is setting in. Reports are almost a bulletin of facts as any attempt at humanising the victims gets harder. It's more like the first world war, a slow grind, rather than the celebratory wins like the battle of the blitz in the second world war.

Any urgency seems unnecessary, this is a long haul. I hope that there is more going on behind the scenes than we are told. Our leaders still seem committed despite Trumps unreliability.

With Christmas approaching and Carol of the Bells being played in the western countries, how many people know that the origin of the song is Ukrainian and Pokrovsk is where Mykola Leontovych (author of the Schedryk song on which Carol of the Bells is based) lived and wrote the song. And now the city of Pokrovsk is in ruins 😢

🚈❗️The Russian enemy destroyed a locomotive depot in the Lubny district of the Poltava region.
The administrative building, several facilities of the depot, and locomotives undergoing maintenance were damaged.
Meanwhile, Ukrzaliznytsia denied reports of reduced train service to the Poltava region following the attack.

For the first time in six months, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has regained backup power.
Repairs to the power line were carried out during a local ceasefire organized by the IAEA. After demining and fixing a damaged section 3 km from the plant, the Ferrosplavnaya-1 line was reconnected on November 8.
This is the first time since early 2025 that the plant has had two external power lines, crucial for maintaining reactor cooling and preventing a nuclear accident.
The Dniprovska line had been restored earlier, meaning the Zaporizhzhia NPP is no longer running on emergency generators.
However, the IAEA warned that the plant’s external power supply remains “extremely fragile.”

The United States fully supports the EU’s plan to use frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine and bring an end to the war with Russia, Reuters reports.
According to a source in Washington, the White House is also monitoring the impact of sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil, adding that “there are more things we could do to increase the pressure.”

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico opposed using frozen Russian assets to provide military aid to Ukraine.
“We can agree that if we spend 140 billion euros on armaments and military expenses, that money will never return. Slovakia cannot rely on military spending,” he said.
Fico also emphasized that as long as he leads the government, he will not take part in any legal or financial mechanisms aimed at confiscating frozen Russian assets.

Russia’s crude oil output rose slightly in October but remained below OPEC+ quotas as international pressure on its energy sector grows, Bloomberg reports.
Last month, Russia produced an average of 9.411 million barrels per day, 43,000 bpd more than in September but 70,000 bpd below its quota, which accounts for previous overproduction, according to Bloomberg calculations.
Oil analysts are closely monitoring Russian output to assess the effects of sanctions and Ukrainian drone strikes on the sector.
If Moscow fails to find buyers for oil from sanctioned producers or struggles to resume refining, it may be forced to halt production at some fields, risking damage to wells.

The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God in Donbas is burning after Russian shelling. Built in the late 19th–early 20th century in the Cossack Baroque style with elements of Classicism, it is part of the local cultural heritage.
Across Ukraine, more than 640 religious sites have been damaged or destroyed by shelling—146 of them in the Donetsk region alone.

At least 56 Russian athletes with military ties, Kremlin funding, or propaganda links could potentially compete “neutrally” at the 2026 Olympics, according to the Molfar Intelligence Institute.
The institute tracks public statements by Russian athletes eligible for international competitions and maintains a register of those who openly or tacitly support Russia’s war against Ukraine.

France is sending old fishing nets to Ukraine to help defend against Russian drones, The Guardian reports.
These nets, usually discarded after two years of use, have proven an effective and unexpected tool for protecting roads from drone attacks. Two shipments totaling 280 km have already arrived in Ukraine. In frontline areas, the nets are used to create tunnels along roads, trapping drones “like flies in a spider’s web.”

🇪🇺The European Commission has warned EU member states of financial consequences if they fail to approve the use of frozen Russian assets for a “reparations loan” to Ukraine.
According to the Financial Times, which cites an internal document circulated among EU capitals, alternative ways of financing aid to Ukraine would directly affect the bloc’s deficit and debt levels. Servicing the joint debt could require up to €5.6 billion annually.
France, already heavily indebted, would pay nearly €1 billion of that amount each year, Italy around €675 million, and Belgium — which continues to block the “reparations loan” — roughly €200 million.

Local Telegram channels report that all of Kharkiv and parts of the region have lost power.
Residents say the voltage in the power grid is extremely low.

[more info] A local ceasefire was established near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to allow repairs to a backup power line, the IAEA reported.
On the morning of November 7, demining and other preparatory work began near the damaged section of the “Ferosplavna-1” power line. Actual repair work is expected to start on November 8.
According to the IAEA, once completed, the plant will have access to two power lines — the “Dniprovska” line was restored last month.
The 330-kilovolt “Ferosplavna-1” line, which supplies electricity to the Zaporizhzhia NPP, has been without external power for over a month. Restoring it is crucial for stabilizing the nuclear safety situation at the plant.

Key Takeaways

  1. Russian and Ukrainian forces continue interdiction campaigns in the Pokrovsk direction as the rate of Russian advances in and around Pokrovsk remains temporarily decreased.
  2. Russian forces are successfully interdicting Ukrainian logistics into Myrnohrad (east of Pokrovsk) as part of efforts to collapse Ukrainian defenses in the town.
  3. The ongoing US government shutdown is reportedly affecting US weapons exports to NATO allies and Ukraine.
  4. European officials continue to report and respond to aerial incursions in European airspace.
  5. Ukrainian forces advanced in the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area. Russian forces advanced near Kupyansk, Siversk, and Hulyaipole.

United 24 Media:

🔹 Romania and Bulgaria are seeking to exempt Russian-owned refineries on their territories from U.S. sanctions, Politico reports.

A similar approach recently succeeded in Hungary, where Prime Minister Viktor Orbán persuaded Donald Trump to delay sanctions on Russian oil companies for at least a year.

Bulgaria has already passed a law allowing the government to temporarily take control of the Lukoil refinery in Burgas, with the option of nationalization under discussion. In Romania, such measures are described as a “last resort,” as authorities prepare a request to postpone the sanctions.

The Burgas refinery supplies up to 80% of Bulgaria’s domestic fuel market, while the Ploiești refinery covers about 20% of Romania’s demand. Their shutdown could cause fuel shortages and affect energy supplies in neighboring Moldova.

Earlier, Bulgaria’s parliament overrode President Rumen Radev’s veto on a law regulating transactions with Russian assets, including those of Lukoil. The company itself has been considering selling its Bulgarian assets since late 2023 and has already shifted from Russian Urals oil to crude sourced from Kazakhstan and the Middle East.

❗President Zelenskyy has imposed sanctions on senior Russian officials and publishing houses, the Presidential Office reported.

Eight individuals were sanctioned, including Russian government officials, an FSB agent involved in information sabotage, a representative of the General Staff’s Information Department, and Putin’s special envoy, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev.

🔸 The Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants were forced to reduce electricity generation after strikes on a substation vital to nuclear safety, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said.

According to the Financial Times, citing Ukrainian government officials, substations supplying power to Ukraine’s nuclear plants have become a new target for Russian attacks, posing a threat to global nuclear safety.

🔹 Russian forces have damaged Ukraine’s first large biomass CHP plant, said Andriy Hrinenko, founder of the Clear Energy group.

“Last night, three drones attacked one of our CHP plants — the one my team and I built in 2016. It became a benchmark for the industry, the first large biomass plant that proved to Ukraine that energy independence starts with local resources. Fortunately, no one was injured. Thank you to everyone on site today for your courage, professionalism, and resilience.”

Biomass power plants generate electricity by burning organic materials such as wood, straw, husks, or agricultural waste. The heat from combustion produces steam that drives a turbine. Many such plants operate in cogeneration mode, supplying both electricity and heat.

🔸 Stoltenberg explained why NATO did not close Ukraine’s skies.

In his memoir On My Watch, the former NATO Secretary General recalled one of the most difficult moments—a conversation with President Zelenskyy in February 2022, when Russian troops were already approaching Kyiv.

Zelenskyy called and asked him to impose a no-fly zone to stop attacks by Russian aircraft, drones, and helicopters. Stoltenberg refused, saying it “would mean a war between NATO and Russia.”

He admitted the conversation was “painful” and that, at the time, the West feared even for Zelenskyy’s life.

Stoltenberg added that NATO’s stance was also shaped by the West’s fear of “World War III,” a concern openly voiced by then–U.S. President Biden.

🔹 Russia’s attack on November 8 disabled all state power generation in central and eastern Ukraine. Russia launched 458 drones and 45 missiles.

Many Ukrainian cities were left without sufficient electricity. Even Kyiv, a megapolis, was plunged into darkness. Despite power outages, Ukrainian households maintain their daily lives. People buy flashlights and decorate their apartments with Christmas lights that run on batteries.

🔸 Australia is buying Russian oil to circumvent sanctions, The Guardian reports.

Energy supplies from Russia are being delivered to Singapore’s Jurong port, which is partly owned by the Australian investment fund Macquarie.

According to the investigation, Australia may have received over 3 million tons of petroleum products since 2023.

The report highlights serious loopholes in the West’s sanctions policy toward Russia.

🇬🇧➡️🇧🇪 Britain is urgently sending experts and equipment to Belgium to strengthen its defenses against drones, Reuters reports.

Commander-in-Chief of the British Armed Forces Richard Knighton said that after a series of drone incidents disrupting airports and military facilities, Belgium requested assistance from London, and both equipment and personnel are already being deployed.

He noted that the source of the drone flights is still unknown but added that Russia has been actively using elements of “hybrid warfare” in recent years, despite its usual denials of involvement.

🔹 Stoltenberg admits Ukraine aid was “little and late” — The Sunday Times

NATO Secretary General said the allies have “provided unprecedented military support since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion — without which Ukraine would likely not have been able to defend itself as it has.”

He also believes the invasion could have been avoided: “If we had provided Ukraine with more military support earlier, it might have prevented a full-scale war,” Stoltenberg said.

🗣 Russia could attack another European country before the war in Ukraine ends, President Zelenskyy told The Guardian.

“Putin is at a dead end in terms of real success. For him, it’s more of a dead end. That’s why these setbacks could force him to look elsewhere,” the president said.

🚇 In Kharkiv, the metro has resumed operation after a three-day shutdown caused by a power outage.

🔸 Three drones were spotted over the Doel nuclear power plant in Belgium on Sunday, November 9, DW reports.

The incident occurred near the city of Antwerp. A spokesperson for Engie, the company operating the plant, said the incident did not affect its operation, and authorities were immediately informed.

Shortly before that, restrictions were introduced at Liège Airport, where three UAVs were also seen. This marks the fourth drone-related incident in Belgium over the past two weeks.

🇸🇮Slovakia will not support using frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine.

Pro-Russian Prime Minister Robert Fico strongly opposes his country agreeing to such a move.

“Do we want to end the war or keep fueling it? Are we going to give Ukraine €140 billion so that the war continues? What does that mean? It means the war will last at least two more years,” Fico said.

🇦🇺 Australia has found a way to buy Russian oil through a sanctions loophole.

Despite an official ban on importing fuel from Russia, since 2023 Australia has imported over 3 million tons of Russian oil products via Singapore’s Jurong port — which is partly owned by Macquarie Bank.

According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, this “sanctions loophole” allows Australian companies to technically comply with the law while effectively supporting Russia’s oil industry and contributing to the Kremlin’s tax revenues.

Government data shows that nearly a quarter of Australia’s fuel imports come from Singapore — which, in turn, received more than 22 million tons of Russian fuel during this period.

Officials acknowledge the problem but admit they are unable to track indirect purchases routed through third countries.

💥 In Vologda and Bashkortostan, the Resistance Movement destroyed four Russian military logistics facilities.

According to Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence Directorate (GUR), at the turn of October and November, members of the Resistance Movement in Russia set fire to equipment at three communication towers in Sterlitamak, Bashkortostan, and a railway relay cabinet in Vologda.

🇪🇸 Spain opposes increasing military spending to 5% of GDP.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that his country is “fully meeting its commitments” to the Alliance through its active presence and deployment of armed forces on NATO’s eastern flank — including in Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania, and Estonia.

The prime minister also stressed that spending 5% of GDP on defense, while education receives less than 5%, “makes no sense.”

According to Sánchez, Europe “should strive for solidarity and international law,” not just military strength.

At the same time, he acknowledged the need for a gradual increase in defense spending.

🔹 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he is ready to hold a personal meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Rubio but insists that any discussion of the war in Ukraine must take into account the Kremlin’s interests.

Lavrov also stated that the summer talks in Alaska between Putin and Trump should remain the foundation for a potential agreement to end Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

🇺🇸 The United States has suspended over $5 billion worth of arms deliveries to NATO allies and Ukraine due to the government shutdown, Axios reports.

The halted shipments include AMRAAM missiles, Aegis combat systems, and HIMARS launchers for Denmark, Croatia, and Poland. Some of these deliveries were reportedly intended for transfer to Ukraine.

According to a U.S. State Department official, the shutdown harms both America’s allies and partners, as well as its own defense industry, which “supplies many of these critical systems abroad.”

▪️The ongoing shutdown — a partial halt of federal government operations — has become the longest in U.S. history, lasting 40 days so far.

🔸 Angelina Jolie shared details about her recent trip to Mykolaiv and Kherson this week.

She said the visit took place under the “constant threat” of Russian drones. At one point, she had to stop and wait while a drone “flew directly overhead.”

“They call it a ‘human safari’ here — when drones constantly chase and terrorize people… I was wearing protective gear, and for me, it lasted only a few days. But these families live like this every day,” Jolie wrote on social media.

She said locals spoke to her about the psychological burden of living under constant threat and the fear of “being forgotten by the world.” Jolie said she was deeply moved by the strength and determination of Ukrainian volunteers.

🔹 “Europe is afraid of the word ‘escalation.’” Key points from Zelensky’s interview with The Guardian:

▪️Ukraine is actively working with partners on air defense and aims to order 27 Patriot systems from the U.S. Meanwhile, according to the president, European countries could provide their own Patriot systems.

▪️Zelensky said Europe is afraid to take decisive action toward Russia:

“Europe is afraid of the word ‘escalation.’ They believe any reaction is escalation — but Russia sees non-forceful, intellectual responses as weakness.”

▪️The president also commented on his relationship with Trump:

“We have a constructive, very focused relationship. Everyone’s afraid of Trump — everyone in the world.

Am I afraid of Trump? No. We are not a threat to the United States — quite the opposite. I believe the U.S. is our strategic partner. Hopefully for decades, even centuries.

Only enemies should be afraid. We and America are not enemies, we are friends — so why should we be afraid?”

💥 Drone attacks targeted a port in Tuapse and a railway near Rostov, according to Russian Telegram channels.

about:blank 🔴Explosions were heard overnight near the railway station in the village of Likhovsky, Rostov region. Footage circulating online shows a fire at the site.

about:blank 🔴In addition, maritime drones reportedly attacked the port of Tuapse in the Krasnodar region, striking one of the vessels.

Russian authorities have not commented on the aftermath of the attack. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have shot down 71 drones over ten regions and the Black Sea.

🇬🇧 King Charles III played a decisive behind-the-scenes role in encouraging Trump to step up his support for Ukraine, President Zelensky said.

He revealed that the British monarch helped restore his relationship with the U.S. president after a dispute in the Oval Office in February.

During his visit to the UK in September, Trump held a private meeting with the King. According to Zelensky, the U.S. president sent “some important signals” to the monarch at that time.

Zelensky added that Charles III is a strong supporter of the Ukrainian people, and that Trump respects the King and considers him “a very important figure.”

🇧🇪 Unknown drones flew over a nuclear power plant in Belgium.

The incident occurred late on November 9, when three drones were detected flying over the Doel nuclear power plant near Antwerp.

The event did not affect the plant’s operations, and relevant authorities continue to monitor the situation.

Earlier the same day, operations at Belgium’s Liège Airport were suspended due to unidentified drones flying nearby.

▪️Throughout October, several unidentified drones were also spotted over Belgian military bases. The country’s defense minister said they were spying on F-16 fighter jets and ammunition depots but stopped short of directly blaming Russia for the incursions.

There were reports from the front. The occupiers have not achieved any significant gains. In the Pokrovsk direction, the Dobropillia districts, and the Donetsk region overall — we are holding our positions, said President Zelenskyy.

🇭🇺 Hungary has enjoyed exemptions from EU sanctions on Russian oil since 2022 and can continue importing it without restriction, the European Commission reminded, following the U.S. decision to postpone its sanctions on Budapest.
European Commission spokesperson Ikonen noted that the EU is working on plans to end Russian gas and oil supplies by the end of 2027 — a measure that will remain in force indefinitely — while sanctions, including those imposed by the U.S., are temporary in nature.

❗️ Russia carried out a massive drone attack on the Odesa region, the State Emergency Service reported.

On November 11, 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine entered Kherson, ending eight months of occupation. Kherson, the only regional capital captured by Russia at the start of the invasion, became a symbol of resilience: even under pressure, Kherson residents bravely took to the streets in peaceful protests.
Three years have passed since this liberation; one that brought joy to all of Ukraine.
However, the war continues: russia keeps terrorizing Kherson and its residents with shelling and relentless drone attacks targeting civilians in what has come to be known as a 'human safari,' demonstrating inhuman cruelty.

👀 Recruitment of reservists to protect critical infrastructure from drone attacks has begun in 20 Russian regions, according to Russian media.

Lukoil has declared force majeure at Iraq’s largest oil field due to U.S. sanctions, Reuters reports.
The decision came after Western sanctions disrupted the company’s normal operations. Lukoil reportedly notified the Iraqi Oil Ministry that force majeure circumstances prevent the continuation of normal activities. The West Qurna-2 field, one of the world’s largest, is Lukoil’s most valuable foreign asset, producing about 480,000 barrels per day—roughly 9% of Iraq’s total oil output.
An Iraqi official told Reuters that if the force majeure situation is not resolved within six months, Lukoil will stop production and withdraw from the project. Iraq cannot work with companies under U.S. sanctions until a payment mechanism is established that does not involve sanctioned entities.
Meanwhile, Bulgarian authorities announced inspections of Lukoil’s Burgas refinery in preparation for taking control of it.
As a reminder, the U.S. and U.K. imposed sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil last month, leading Iraq to halt all payments to Lukoil, both in cash and in crude oil.

Russian forces have deployed a modified “Molniya” strike drone carrying a payload of yellow phosphorus against Ukrainian troops, according to the Ukrainian analytical group Vodogray on November 10.

🇸🇰 Slovak prosecutors have closed the case over the transfer of Soviet MiG-29s to Ukraine in spring 2023, Politico reports.
The case targeted former Prime Minister Eduard Heger and former Defense Minister Jaroslav Naď, who were accused of “sabotage and abuse of power.”

In the Zaporizhzhia oblast, analysts from the DeepState project have observed a significant expansion of the gray zone along the Solodke–Novomykolayivka–Rivnopillia–Nove–Novouspenivske line.
They reported that the enemy’s numerical advantage is becoming evident, and control over a large portion of the area is now uncertain — potentially putting the town of Huliaipole at risk.

In the Kharkiv region, near the village of Bolohivka, Russian forces have once again crossed the state border, according to Nemichev, founder of the KRAKEN unit.
“There’s a so-called ‘buffer zone’ along parts of the border — about five kilometers wide — where neither our troops nor the enemy maintain a constant presence. Russia is actively exploiting this,” Nemichev said.
He added that the enemy has recently made minor advances within the town of Vovchansk.
According to him, Russia’s plan is to link its groupings in Vovchansk and Dvorichna — actions that could be part of preparations for new offensive operations.

An unidentified explosive detonated inside a hospital in Zaporizhzhia.
A man was injured as a result of the blast. Emergency services are working at the scene, and the circumstances of the incident are being investigated.

Moscow is opening “Russian Houses” across Africa.
These centers host language courses, lectures on Russian culture and art, film screenings, and meetings “to get to know Russia today.” Among the so-called “educational programs” are propaganda narratives — including claims about the “return of Crimea” in 2014, “the fight against colonialism,” and “Russia’s great role in Africa.”
The network is overseen by Rossotrudnichestvo, an agency widely regarded as the Kremlin’s main instrument for promoting soft power. Soon, official and “partner” Russian Houses will operate in 22 African countries.

▪️Moscow used a similar approach in Ukraine. The Kyiv office of Rossotrudnichestvo functioned until 2021, while branches of the Russkiy Mir foundation operated for years in many Ukrainian cities.

More than 14,000 stamps bearing Nazi symbols were intercepted at the Ukrainian border.
The stamps were found hidden among declared secondhand clothing at the Shehyni–Medyka checkpoint.
Their import violates Ukrainian law prohibiting the promotion of totalitarian symbols, so the stamps were confiscated at the border.
The estimated black-market value of the seized items exceeds 1.5 million hryvnias (~$40 000).

🇩🇪 German politician and Putin ally Sahra Wagenknecht will step down from leading her party.
She announced that she wants to focus on “strategic and ideological issues” rather than the day-to-day management of the party.
Wagenknecht has proposed Fabio De Masi — her longtime ally and former Bundestag member — as her successor.
Despite her resignation, Wagenknecht is not leaving politics. She plans to create and lead a values commission that will define the main ideological directions and strategy of the BSW party.
▪️Sahra Wagenknecht is known for her harsh criticism of the West, her calls for “neutrality” in Russia’s war against Ukraine, and her opposition to supplying weapons to Kyiv. Her positions have often aligned with Kremlin narratives, earning her a reputation in German media as a pro-Russian politician.
