If you’ve taken Utrogestan..

Can I ask you a few questions please? The menopause board doesn’t usually get many replies!

I’ve been on 200mg Utrogestan for 3 1/2 months taken 2 weeks on/2 weeks off alongside 50mg estrogen patch.

The two weeks on Utrogestan my anxiety and mood hasn’t been good, getting worse each month. I finished my 2 weeks on it yesterday and my anxiety has skyrocketed tonight.

Im back to see the doctor next week for review.

I know a lot of people don’t get on with progesterone so what do you take?

I have awful health anxiety so I don’t want to hear any horror stories, more so advice please 🙏

Maybe you need to go back to your gp and discuss with them. I find that the 2 weeks that I take progesterone I feel much less anxious and sleep much better (I begged my gp for 2 extra nights which she agreed to!)
I do take the gel oestrogen though as I can't bear the stickiness of patches

Sunflower2461 · 15/10/2025 19:45

I didn't get on with utrogestan (it gave me reflux) so I had the mirena fitted instead. It is early days so I can't say for sure if is better, however systemic effects are meant to be lower. Some people find utrogestan vaginally is better for them, but it was actually worse for me.

Libertylawn · 15/10/2025 19:46

I was like this - awful, nearly suicidal. It was awful. Tried it vaginally and made no difference. My gynae said I’d have to come of estrogen or have a hysterectomy as I have a family history of uterine issues. So I was persuaded to get a mirena coil and I was terrified because what if I didn’t get on with it, etc. Anyway, it’s been miraculous. Hardly any periods, and they were monster previously. Highly recommend it.

Same here for me with Utrogestan. Really hated it. I’m in Ireland so I switched to Duphaston, has worked great, no issues - but I believe not licensed for this use in UK?

Magpiecomplex · 15/10/2025 19:51

Utrogestan gave me awful dizzy spells.

I’ve never even heard of it!

I take it like you but with the gel. No problems. Sleep much better on it tbh.

Notsomerryperries · 15/10/2025 20:01

Also I’m not sure if this is a problem but it’s not syncing up with my cycle. I’m getting my period when I start the 2 weeks ON Utrogestan and I believe you’re supposed to get it during the 2 weeks off!

Yes I sleep more deeply on it with vivid dreams.

Yes I was exactly the same as you…saw my gyny consultant and mentioned it to him and now I take it constantly…feel so much better. Maybe ask your dr if you can do the same 🙂

MiddleAgedDread · 15/10/2025 20:16

I take it but with the oestrogen gel. Was previously on Everol patches which you do 2 weeks of oestrogen only and then 2 weeks of one with progesterone. Might be worth trying as I believe it’s a different sort of progesterone. Or you get a mirena and take oestrogen on top. Go back to your GP or practice nurse as there’s definitely other options to try.
my bleeding also doesn’t follow any pattern even with the progesterone……19 day cycle one month, 35
the next!!

Really? The thought of being on it all the times scares me 😟

I back there next week for a review. Good to know the cycle part is normal!

I take it with oestrogen gel. I’ve not noticed my moods with it, I do get very very down to suicidal with PMT. I’m now wondering if they are linked.

the gel made me bleed so I’ve split the dose (I’ve not been able to ask my doctor if this is ok yet!) one pump in the morning one in the evening and now it’s stopped bleeding and my periods completely

which now means I don’t know when to take the progesterone Confused

I appreciate this doesn’t answer you at all!

socks1107 · 15/10/2025 21:24

What time of day do you all take it? I’ve been asked to take it as I am on the gel but have had a hysterectomy and my sleep is awful
so wandering if this will help?

NippyNinjaCrab · 15/10/2025 21:33

I couldn't take it orally either I was a snivelling mess. I was switched to Provera which was fabulous but its been unavailable for a couple of months so I am back on Utrogestan but vaginally. I feel not too shabby, not as good as Provera plus it feels messy in the morning. I also take it continuously, I am 53 and not had a period for a good while. I have started Estroil too.

cupfinalchaos · 15/10/2025 21:46

I take 200mg Utrogestan every evening. Has never made me anxious or much else apart from drousy and helps me get to sleep. I would imaging the doctor will suggest a mirena coil instead to keep your lining thin.

Notsomerryperries · 15/10/2025 22:39

I take it before bed.

I had read that taking it vaginally could help reduce side effects so I’m going to ask the doctor about it next week.

seriously go back and get an alternative. I started on the serqui patches and the ones with progesterone sent me crackers. Properly questioning whether I should be there.

rhere is no need for such feelings. Mirena has been life changing.

How long after stopping the Utrogestan did you feel better? I’m usually really good the 2 weeks off it but 2 days after taking the last dose I’m still feeling wired/ anxious/ racing thoughts.

golemmings · 16/10/2025 07:05

I got my period whilst on utrogestan so couldn't take it vaginally plus suicidal thoughts.

I'm sensitive to some forms of progesterone. (Microgynon also made me insane).

I'm now on everal conti patches and back on the mini pill which I know I can tolerate.

I've gone from 3m periods on patches only to no period for last 4w, and my mood is relatively stable.

There will be options out there.

Notsomerryperries · 16/10/2025 07:11

I was previously put on Slynd which I didn’t feel as anxious on but the next time I saw a doctor, they weren’t happy with that and moved me onto Utrogestan.

OP posts:
RobinEllacotStrike · 16/10/2025 08:32

I cannot tolerate Utrogestan at all.

I’ve now switched to patches. Just done one month so it’s early days but seems I don’t have the same dreadful reaction.

lambinapram · 16/10/2025 15:50

I switched to taking it vaginally, symptoms disappeared and I sleep great during those 2 weeks.

curlyLJ · 16/10/2025 16:36

You might need to consider taking it continuously so you're more balanced all month/cycle. It could be the on/off that's making you feel like that.
Estrogen can take over and as progesterone drops off much more than estrogen it can make things unbalanced.

That's what I did and it really feels much better. In fact I dropped the estrogen entirely in the end as it was making me bleed irregularly. Periods much lighter now and only last 2-3 days.
