DS15 Used a Green Apple to Roll His Foot After Hike – Am I Overreacting?

So, we just got back from a weekend in the Lake District with our two lads (15 and 11) and another family. We all did Scafell Pike together, and it was brilliant... but when we got back to the hotel, my DS15 said his feet were aching after the hike. To try and ease the pain, he decided to put a green apple on the floor and roll his bare foot back and forth over it. It’s something he does at home with a tennis ball after football training, and it really helps with muscle soreness.

Now, here’s the thing: we didn’t have a tennis ball, so he used an apple instead. I get that he was trying to relieve the pain, but when I saw him doing it, I was a bit miffed. The apple obviously had to go straight in the bin after – it ended up all soft and stinky! I just feel like if he thought he was going to need something like that, he should’ve remembered to bring a tennis ball.

Am I being unreasonable to be a bit frustrated about it, or am I overreacting? I know he was trying to help himself, but I just can’t help thinking it was a bit... well, a waste to use an apple!

Sorry but that’s a massive over reaction. Apple maybe 25 p? Poor lad

Lucytheloose · 14/10/2025 18:55

You do know they grow on trees, right?

Ashersmom · 14/10/2025 19:01

You're batshit. It's an apple. I thought you were going to say he stained the carpet. He didn't waste it.

Smellseeker · 14/10/2025 19:04

Yes its a waste. You could've put it out for the birds.

WFHforevermore · 14/10/2025 19:04

Very politely, you are a weirdo its a 20p apple.

Dollymylove · 14/10/2025 19:04

Is this a joke? Cos its really funny 🤣🤣

PigletJohn · 14/10/2025 19:05

If it was me, I'd have eaten it after rubbing it on my vest.

We're there no bottles in this hotel?

willowthecat · 14/10/2025 19:05

Well you could have baked it into a crumble if you were that desperate to reduce food waste. Of course you are over reacting - can't believe this is real !

I used a cucumber as a rolling pin once.

Genius omg

sweetpickle2 · 13/10/2025 14:13

Would you rather he was in pain? Strange reaction. It's an apple, not a Fabergé egg.

🤣🤣🤣

momtoboys · 14/10/2025 19:09

You are absolutely overreacting.

TBF if it was a pink lady apple, I would be pissed too! The price of them! If it was braeburn, gala or similar cheaper variety I wouldn't care. But pink ladys are sacred in this house.

Uber eats on Mondays sells fresh fruit/veg for 50% off! It's so handy

Toddlertiredp · 14/10/2025 19:13

Would you be more or less upset if it was a red apple?

I hope it solved his pain (that would be my concern!) he sounds resourceful.

FancyCatSlave · 14/10/2025 19:15

Oh Christ @OneShyCritic don’t come to my house, we are overun with apple trees and the fecking things drive me potty. Most of ours go to the pigs as I am heartily sick of apples.
I have developed apple based rage for them, they can all get in the bin to be honest.

Ridiculous!

WilfredsPies · 14/10/2025 19:21

I mean this with honesty and with kindness, but is there something else going on? Either issues along the lines of OCD or feelings of a loss of control that’s manifesting itself by you focusing on really small things because the bigger things seem insurmountable? Because this is really not a normal reaction to an uneaten apple going in the bin. Worrying about it being a bad example for his younger brother is even stranger, as it’s your reaction that would be a bad example for either of them to follow.

He didn’t waste it. He used it to stop his foot from hurting because he didn’t have a ball. And yes, it would have been sensible if he’d pre planned and brought his tennis ball, but he’s 15. Fifteen year olds aren’t known for their ability to pre plan treatment for aches and pains they don’t have yet. It’s exactly the same as medical grade honey being used to treat wounds rather than being put on a slice of toast. And yes, you could have chopped it up and left it outside for the birds, but if a hedgehog had got it, it would have given it the shits, so the bin was the best place for it.

Scarlettpixie · 14/10/2025 19:21

He didn’t waste the apple though. He used it for pain relief. It probably did him more good in that moment than it would have if he had eaten it. If he had taken a couple of neurofen there would still have been a cost. If he did both it’s still fine. You do sound a bit bonkers!

GlomOfNit · 14/10/2025 19:24

Oh for goodness sake. I'm not normally in favour of wasting food at all and will create whole meals in order not to throw some disregarded veg at the back of the fridge ... but this is one apple. Your son was in pain and used sensible lateral thinking to sort it out. Even if you buy them singly in a convenience store, apples are about 50p each, and cheaper in bulk. If you were worried about waste, I'd have slung it under a hedge for the birds/hedgehogs to eat, which is what I do with most of my apple cores.

Think about your hike, minus that one single apple. Is it REALLY ruined now? Of course not.

Jorge14 · 14/10/2025 19:28

Massively over reacting.

Gagaandgag · 14/10/2025 19:29

Does he do this regularly? If no then I don’t see the problem as a one off!? Do you need some counselling to explore why you were so incredibly upset about wasting an apple?

GlomOfNit · 14/10/2025 19:32

I really miss the laugh react emoji. Sad I see that we now have FLOWERS which are meant to show SUPPORT.

FFS MNHQ, we don't want flowers, we want to do viperish sniggering. Especially when confronted with batshit posts like this.

whatevenwasthat · 14/10/2025 19:34

This is genuinely one of the most pathetic things I’ve seen someone have the time and energy to post about on this website.

I can’t believe you’ve actually gone to the effort of a fairly lengthy post, but also two defensive follow up posts about a fucking apple.

canchewcashew · 14/10/2025 19:35

I'd find that annoying. There are other ways to relieving foot pain, surely. Is it a big deal? No, but I'd still be irritated and tell him not to do it again.

BusyExpert · 14/10/2025 19:38

Was this really worth writing about?

Bloozie · 14/10/2025 19:44

If this is a real post - is there something else going on, OP? Do you suffer from anxiety, or OCD? Do you have issues with control/feeling out of control? Do you have a disordered relationship with food?

Would it have been better, worse, or any different if it was a red apple?
