Why does Palestine bring out such strong feelings?

Saveusename · 11/10/2025 00:05

I really don’t want this to become about individuals’ feelings about the conflict. There are plenty of threads for that.

I am interested in why Palestine provokes such a strong feelings about civilian in Britain. We didn’t see weekly marches and such intense, passionate feelings regarding any other conflicts over in, say, the past ten years (Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, Congo, Somalia, and, of course, Ukraine). These all involve thousands of civilian casualties caused by conflict.

What is it about Palestine in particular that causes British people to feel so passionately about it?

Someone said to me today that, for them, it was the most pressing political issue. They have never even mentioned any of the other conflicts above. It got me thinking about it. If you care greatly about what happens in Palestine, why Palestine and not the other conflicts?

Please don’t come on and say you care about them all. It might be true but there is no doubt that the reaction to what’s happening in Palestine in Britain is much greater than the rest, which barely cause a murmur.

Really good question and I find myself being curious about the whys behind lots of political issues at the moment - why Palestine, why Tommy Robinson, why trans - what are the sequence of events that caused so much momentum?

Superfoodie123 · 11/10/2025 00:27

Because its the longest running apartheid thats still in existence today and being supported by the most apparently civilised governments like ours/America

TheSixthBestOption · 11/10/2025 00:40

It is interesting isn't it? I dont remember much, if any protests againat the genocides in Rwanda (500k to 800k deaths), Darfur (about 500k deaths), Yazidi genocide or Uyghur torture, slavery and genocide, for example. Or the ongoing Islamist massacres in Nigeria.

Hereweka · 11/10/2025 00:41

Because we set it up. We created the problem in the Balfour Declaration.

We have also, through collective guilt, allowed Israel to become regional bullies.

It is a mess of our own creating.

There was a mass outpouring over Ukraine, but that's become background now - and less evidence of state backed genocide.

Sydan, Congo, Somalia - people don't "look like us". Many in the UK daily to identify with pain suffered by others. That's dreadful, but true.

AutumnFoxe · 11/10/2025 00:42

anti-Semitism. Plain and simple.

LondonGirrrrl · 11/10/2025 00:43

the killing of so many vulnerable adults children, the reporting , the images in the news

Westcott313 · 11/10/2025 00:44

Because we've watched babies, children, men and women murdered on a daily basis for the last two years on social media without a pause. I've seen children taking their last breaths, guts spilling out, brain matter etc.

I've never seen anything like it.

Mosaic123 · 11/10/2025 00:44

I agree with anti-Semitism as a reason.

It's always been around sadly. Sometimes more under the surface.

Currently not so much.

TheSixthBestOption · 11/10/2025 00:45

But why is this being publicised on social media and not the other atrocities and war crimes that are being carried out elsewhere?

But surely because you haven't looked for it?

Kids have taken their last breaths with their guts spilling out on all of the other conflicts the OP mentions. If you sought it out you could find it. Not seeing it doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Westcott313 · 11/10/2025 00:47

And it's not about anti semitism. It's nothing to do with hating Jews.

It's nothing to do with Jews. I value life. I have kids and I don't want to see other people losing their kids under rubble.

I don't care what religion or race you are. Killing children is WRONG.

It's not collateral damage
It's genocide.

anti-Semitism. Plain and simple.

Sadly, yes. I really don’t know what other justification there is after the October 7 attacks.

Icebreakhell · 11/10/2025 00:50

Is it simply because it’s reported in the media so much and on the news almost daily for months?

To be honest most people I know barely mention it. It comes up sometimes at work because I’m in a multicultural setting, but only in a ‘isn’t it terrible’ vague way. The big cities have large Islamic communities who protest. But otherwise it’s mostly the usual students, hippies and agitators.

Hmmm not sure if any country has used drones and lethal bombs on children like this before.

But yes just because I haven't seen it doesn't mean it's not happening elsewhere.

According to the UN 7.8million people in Nigeria need urgent assistance due to violence by armed Islamic groups- 80% of whom are women and children. These people are hacked to death, raped, driven out of their homes, tortured etc daily. https://www.globalr2p.org/countries/nigeria/

Where is the outrage about this? Where are the protests? Who cares about these women and children? Is there no interest because its perceived as an African problem? Is it because the victims have different coloured skin to most of us in the UK?

I find it very interesting why a lot of people just dont seem to care about these people but do care about Palestinians.

Nigeria - Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect

Escalating attacks by armed bandit groups, as well as intensified violence by Boko Haram and the so-called Islamic State in West Africa, leave civilians in Nigeria at risk of atrocity crimes.

The UK colonised Yemen in the 1800s and ruled it till the 1960s.

We divided up the Ottoman Empire and agreed that Syria would be French.

Afghanistan… if there is something we should feel guilt for it is how we withdrew and threw the civilians to the wolves.

We colonised Sudan and Somalia until the 1960s.

We drew artificial borders around these countries and contributed to the mess they are now in.

People don’t ’look like us’ in Palestine either.

It doesn’t explain why Palestine is treated so differently.

So it’s the social media that is making the difference? Interesting.

Because people who are living it are posting about it?

Theres an underlying message in this thread. That somehow those of us shouting about what's happening in Palestine are doing so because we are anti semetic.

It's not about anti semitism.

I'm going to bed.

It's not anti-semitism. I think it's more to do with how many blatant lies we've been told, the propaganda we've had shoved down out throats, the realization of how deeply entrenched our own governments were and are in this and how people have had their jobs, livelihoods, lieves and education threatened for speaking out. Pair this with the footage and images and it's a recipe for collective horror and need to take action. This genocide has really opened people's eyes.

I accept it’s not about anti-semitism. But why is it? What creates the outpouring of emotion for Palestine that does not exist in other conflicts, even for Ukraine?
