Using the same gloves to clean the toilet/bathroom as the kitchen.

Admittedly, I do have OCD but is this not a little bit.... well, yuk?

I started a cleaning job the other day, not my ideal but beggers can't be choosers and that is the situation I find myself in right now.

I have done a few cleaning jobs in my past and have always used pink rubber gloves for the kitchen and a yellow pair for cleaning toilets and bathrooms. I do this in my own home.

So, I am working alongside another cleaner who has been doing the job for years. I started opening up the packets of my new pink and yellow gloves and started setting myself up, the other cleaner asked why I had two pairs and I explained as above and she said 'Oh, I have never done that before', I asked her what she meant and she replied that she uses the same pair of gloves for cleaning both toilets and the kitchen.

I was a little bit taken aback by that - is this not poor hygiene practise or am I just extra fussy? I would hate to think I was paying for a cleaner who had used the same gloves to clean my loo and my kitchen counter tops.

Bloody grim!!! So she’s cleaning a kitchen with faecal matter??!!🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮 I’d be telling the employers this personally

AgentPidge · 09/10/2025 10:25

What? Noooooooooooo! YADNBU!

2dogsandabudgie · 09/10/2025 10:26

That's unacceptable. Absolutely gross.

I am extremely slack and lazy when it comes to cleaning, but even I would not use the same gloves for both! We have extra tough black ones that are kept strictly for the bathrooms.

Redshoeblueshoe · 09/10/2025 10:28

That is disgusting. YANBU

It's my sister and it's her own cleaning business which she has been running for the last 15 years.

I am so surprised as she is usually so fastidious about cleaning (or so I thought!).

I wear gloves for all my cleaning as I have sensitive skin and cleaning products leave my hands sore. But equally I don't relish the thought of wiping down strangers toilets with bare hands tbh so would rather have some kind of barrier between loo seat bacteria and my own hands!

I beg to differ. I use the same pair of rubber gloves for all cleaning. However, when I’ve cleaned the bathroom, I always use hot water and loads of soap to wash my hands with the gloves on.
What if you don’t wear gloves for cleaning. You just wash your hands after cleaning the bathroom? Same difference.

angelcake20 · 09/10/2025 10:33

I’m the scummiest person around and even I have separate gloves for the toilets.

Buxusmortus · 09/10/2025 10:34

I've never in my life used different gloves for cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms, it would never have occurred to me. I've cleaned my own home for 40 years and it's never caused a problem.
I clean the loo with bleach so that will kill germs. The only separate pair of gloves I use is a pair for cleaning out the cat's litter tray.

deathbyprocrastination · 09/10/2025 10:35

Well, it really depends how the cleaning is being done. I do have separate gloves for kitchen / rest of house. But, for the 'rest of house' ones I wash them i.e. I sort of wash my hands with the gloves on, using antibac soap, after doing each bathroom. Also, I'm not directly touching any toilets, I'm holding the end of a rubber loo brush (the ones that you stuff doesn't stick too) or using an antibac wipe to wipe around the underneath of the seat/rim of the toilet. So, on that basis, I don't think it's too awful if she's literally just touching a dirty toilet and then moving to the kitchen sink it's gross obvs

You've explained it better than me re the washing of the gloves!

MoonDanceDiner · 09/10/2025 10:36

Shows that we are all different I suppose but it's something I've always done since living in my own house, just feels weird using the same gloves to clean down a toilet and then a kitchen countertop where food is prepared, even if you do wash or disinfect said gloves afterwards.

Oh - if I was cleaning someone else's home, then I would be wearing gloves. I wear them at work if it's my turn to clean the loo!! But I don't wear them at home.

Bowling4soup · 09/10/2025 10:44

I don’t wear gloves to clean my own home but I can imagine using a pair of gloves to do the kitchen first then move on to the bathroom then dispose of them

purplecorkheart · 09/10/2025 10:47

I don't wear gloves cleaning my own house but certainly if I did there would be different gloves for cleaning the loo.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 09/10/2025 10:48

I use my right hand for the kitchen and the left for the bathroom to keep things separate.

I don't always, but I suppose the implication is that she would also use the same cloth for both. That's what I'd assume, but could be wrong.

sweetpickle2 · 09/10/2025 14:31

Depends what order she's cleaning in surely?

I use the same pair through my house, but I end in the bathroom then throw them away.

This. For me it's yellow for kitchen and black heavy duty for bathroom.

AgentPidge · 09/10/2025 14:33

@MoonDanceDiner I suppose the real question is - does she use the same cloths/sponges for the loo seats and the kitchen counter?!

taxguru · 09/10/2025 14:34

Not only same gloves, but same cloth! Saw that on holiday once in a self catering apartment. It was a rainy day so we stayed in and let the cleaner in to do her thing around us. It was DH who noticed she breezed through the apartment wearing the same gloves in all rooms and only carrying a single cloth and spray bottle. She went upstairs first, did the bathrooms, and then came down and did the kitchen in same gloves and using the same cloth to wipe the surfaces! Once DH had told me, I had to go round cleaning it all myself again. After that we put the "do not disturb" notice on the door for the remaining days so she didn't come in again! It was easier to do our own wiping/cleaning than have her come and and having to wipe after her!
