Using the same gloves to clean the toilet/bathroom as the kitchen.

Admittedly, I do have OCD but is this not a little bit.... well, yuk?

I started a cleaning job the other day, not my ideal but beggers can't be choosers and that is the situation I find myself in right now.

I have done a few cleaning jobs in my past and have always used pink rubber gloves for the kitchen and a yellow pair for cleaning toilets and bathrooms. I do this in my own home.

So, I am working alongside another cleaner who has been doing the job for years. I started opening up the packets of my new pink and yellow gloves and started setting myself up, the other cleaner asked why I had two pairs and I explained as above and she said 'Oh, I have never done that before', I asked her what she meant and she replied that she uses the same pair of gloves for cleaning both toilets and the kitchen.

I was a little bit taken aback by that - is this not poor hygiene practise or am I just extra fussy? I would hate to think I was paying for a cleaner who had used the same gloves to clean my loo and my kitchen counter tops.

Depends what order she's cleaning in surely?

I use the same pair through my house, but I end in the bathroom then throw them away.

Not if she doesn't change them between properties! No guarantee at all that she uses new ones every time.

Gross 🤢

Yes the same pair across properties would be gross no matter what rooms you're doing when, but I didn't take that as the issue from the OP.

Like other, I just give a good "hand wash" wearing the gloves and maybe a squirt of anti bac spray if the bottle is handy. Who the fuck is throwing out rubber gloves after using them once in the bathroom??

Edited

You don't throw them out, you just put them aside for future use in the bathroom. Not that hard to keep two pairs on the go, one for bathrooms, the other for kitchens.

You could finish in the bathroom. That’s what I do with the mop, then you can wash the mop head.

Two posters on this thread have said they finish in the bathroom and throw out the gloves.

@MoonDanceDiner I suppose the real question is - does she use the same cloths/sponges for the loo seats and the kitchen counter?!

I bloody hope not lol!

Not only same gloves, but same cloth! Saw that on holiday once in a self catering apartment. It was a rainy day so we stayed in and let the cleaner in to do her thing around us. It was DH who noticed she breezed through the apartment wearing the same gloves in all rooms and only carrying a single cloth and spray bottle. She went upstairs first, did the bathrooms, and then came down and did the kitchen in same gloves and using the same cloth to wipe the surfaces! Once DH had told me, I had to go round cleaning it all myself again. After that we put the "do not disturb" notice on the door for the remaining days so she didn't come in again! It was easier to do our own wiping/cleaning than have her come and and having to wipe after her!

Oh, that's grim.

Yeah, I am going to have to spray the gloves with some kind of disinfectant between houses. I can't afford to purchase new gloves each week for each house we clean and I am not going to use disposables as that isn't great for the environment.

I still bork when I remember catching my uni boyfriend scrubbing our bathroom with the kitchen sponge and casually telling me he ‘always used it.’

Years later, I had cleaned our bathroom sink and bath with a cloth that I popped on the towel radiator to dry. Found my husband wiping our baby’s face with it. It didn’t look like a washcloth, it wasn’t one of our washcloths, so how he could think it was a washcloth? Baby was my first born so I cried and googled all diseases associated with soap scum and mildew.

SeaAndStars · 09/10/2025 19:38

You go to the loo, you wash your hands, then you go downstairs and prepare and eat your lunch.

Isn't that the same thing as cleaning the bathroom, washing the gloves with soap, then cleaning the kitchen? You're using cleaning products all the time so surely the gloves are cleaner than clean?

FrogsWormsandButterflies · 09/10/2025 19:39

I’ve never worn gloves for cleaning and I clean a lot. I start downstairs and work my way up finishing in the bathroom. I do use separate cloths.

TheChosenTwo · 09/10/2025 19:41

I don’t wear gloves to clean (I don’t do much tbh as my cleaner comes and does the grunt work and she does use separate gloves!) but it’s like using the same dishcloth to clean your loo and then your sink - rather unhygienic and unsanitary 🤢

I beg to differ. I use the same pair of rubber gloves for all cleaning. However, when I’ve cleaned the bathroom, I always use hot water and loads of soap to wash my hands with the gloves on.
What if you don’t wear gloves for cleaning. You just wash your hands after cleaning the bathroom? Same difference.

This is my thinking too.
