Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

I hate carrying stuff too. I leave my clothes at home because I don't want to be carrying them.

😂😂Good one!
yeah I don't get you OP, always lock my door and take keys and phone with me.

Desktop computers went out with the Ark, or was it the dinosaurs? 🤣

I have a laptop (Chromebook) because occasionally some things work on that better than on my phone, but it isn't used that often.

I'm 59, by the way. I was using a mobile phone for many things 10 years ago too.

I don't use my desktop a lot but I use my laptop all the time. No way am I using my phone to look at websites, do surveys etc on a stupid small screen

Ponderingwindow · 04/10/2025 18:00

Op, you must have the privilege of good health. You must also have family with good health. No worries about children being rushed to a&e.

I would never go for a walk in the countryside or anywhere without my phone easily accessible. I got my first cell phone precisely so I could call in an emergency from wherever I might be.

my phone is always within arms reach.

Of course they were doing this ten years ago. Have you been living on a different planet?!

I’m the same age as you and everyone I know - and I mean everyone - has been taking their phone with them everywhere for at least 20 years, probably longer.

Jeez, well I'm younger than you both and I didn't even own a mobile phone 20years ago!

I've never taken a phone everywhere, didn't when I first got one, still don't now.

RaininSummer · 04/10/2025 18:00

I do. It holds my payment cards and is also my camera whilst out on walks. If family need me they can get in touch. Great when I get lost too.

HJC88 · 04/10/2025 18:01

Yes, take mine everywhere, especially on country walks and hikes. It has maps if you get lost, you can call if there's an emergency .... Why wouldn't you take it for safety as much as anything?

PeacefulHouse · 04/10/2025 17:58

I just don't understand how come most people seem to need it a lot, and I don't

I don't need mine a lot, but I always take it with me, just in case I do.
Because sometimes I do. A couple of occasions when I've been stuck in traffic and I have an appointment for example.
Mind you, on these occasions it's usually a day that I've forgotten it.
So basically I always take it with me unless I forget. But I don't often actually need it. Hope that's clear.

I think this is a very healthy attitude.
I do take my phone everywhere, as does my 80 year old DM because we have adopted technology and find it useful rather than seeing it as an inconvenience or a threat.

SalonDesRefuses · 04/10/2025 18:01

I don't lock my door either! I have a big dog and my house isn't on a main street so no one walks directly by it. I'm more at risk of losing my keys than being robbed (not that I have much actually worth stealing).

I do take my phone everywhere but only because I have kids so I need them to be able to contact me in an emergency.

I don't use it to pay in shops or for that much, really. I have physical cards to pay or collect points. Had an amazing time away for a couple of days with no phone signal, sooo relaxing (details were left for the people who owned the land so any emergencies they would have been able to tell me).

FancyCatSlave · 04/10/2025 18:02

Never without my phone, mine isn’t clunky despite being in a super rugged case. It’s on charge whenever it is in the car so battery rarely low. I use it to pay for practically everything, all my loyalty cards are on it etc and I do almost everything online via apps.

I live rurally where noone locks their doors but I still take my phone! It logs my steps, maps my routes on horses and foot. I just can’t live without it.

Ellmau · 04/10/2025 18:02

It's usually in my handbag so it goes with me by default. But it's not always charged.

I don't take my purse/cards/cash to work though.

I'm with you OP, I don't take my phone everywhere either. I find it quite liberating!

It does piss me off when people expect immediate replies to messages though. Not everyone is glued to their phones!

I take my phone everywhere for the reasons I previously mentioned.

I reply to non-urgent messages when I have the time and energy. The phone is there for my convenience, not someone else’s.

You leave the house and leave the door open? Why?

Some of us live in places where you can do that. Our car keys never come out of the ignition at home. We have been away for the weekend and left the back door open not just unlocked and i have no idea where the front door keys are. As for taking a phone that's a rarity.

AhBiscuits · 04/10/2025 18:03

It's the only thing I always have on me. I use it to pay for stuff. I don't have a key as we have a digital lock.

Tessabelle74 · 04/10/2025 18:03

I carry mine everywhere, What's the point of it if it's at home and I'm out?

So super rural?

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:26

Clearly I am wrong, just curious why I'm different to the vast majority

Do you by any chance have a desktop computer? I loathe doing complex maneuvers or money stuff on a small screen and like to do it peacefully while sitting in front of al large screen on a better protected device. So I don't feel I need my phone 24/7. Also I'm in a country which hasn't forced everybody on to their phone to do their banking and where credit cards and even cash are more accepted and acceptable.

JohnTheRevelator · 04/10/2025 18:04

I rarely go anywhere without my phone. If I'm not actually using it,it's in my handbag, and if I go out anywhere,I always take my handbag with me as it's also got my keys, purse, travel pass in it.

sconebone · 04/10/2025 18:05

This seems like a really weird humble brag

CurlewKate · 04/10/2025 18:05

Oh, think of us boring mundanes who carry our phones with us! How very-ordinary of us!🤣🤣

finallygettingit · 04/10/2025 18:06

I know 2 people (we are all 60+) who don't carry their phone with them and its a bloody pain in the arse for other people, verging on the rude. If you are planning to meet you can't tell them of any change of plan and nor can they tell you if they are running late etc
So you end up sitting in a cafe for 20 mins thinking...have they forgotten? or been run over?

IamGrout · 04/10/2025 18:07

I love my phone more than my husband and take it everywhere with me. It even comes into the shower so I can watch/listen to stuff 😂

HowardTJMoon · 04/10/2025 18:08

Ever since I had children in the late 90s I've always kept my phone with me. They're now adults so it's less necessary but I've also got an elderly mother with health issues so I like to be contactable whenever/wherever needed.

brunettemic · 04/10/2025 18:08

I take it everywhere. Never take any cards or anything like that. Far easier.

TypeyMcTypeface · 04/10/2025 18:11

No, I don't. I'll take it if I am going out for the whole day, but not, for example, if I'm going to the supermarket. I often forget to pick it up, or to check it for messages. It just isn't very central to my life. I use my laptop to access the internet. The phone is used for texts and calls and unexpected photographs (I take a camera with me if photography is expected to be part of my day) and occasionally I will use the sat nav on it.

KittyHigham · 04/10/2025 18:11

It's absolutely fine for you to choose not to have your phone with you or leave your doors unlocked and not have insurance (?! to the last one). But whats odd is suggesting you are surprised that other people do have their phones with them. Just watching tv or being out in town or in the cinema or pub etc. you'd know how prevalent phone use is. And it doesn't take much imagination to have a good idea why they do. Parents need to be contactable by schools or nursery, partners message about arrangements or updates on times, self employed people need to be contactable, people pay contactless via it, unforeseen circumstances or emergencies etc.
I'm in my 60s and go out and about with just keys and phone. They go in my pocket so I don't feel weighed down at all. Far freer than the days when a handbag of some sort was the norm!
Your need to carry nothing is much more unusual than simply having a phone about you.
