My cat cries for fuss than sits just slightly out of reach? Why??

My cat is so weird. She comes over crying, brushing against me, standing on me, clearly wants fuss. I start stroking her and moves and sits just like 1mm out of my reach! I then give up cos cant reach and she immediately comes begging again...repeat forever...why is she doing this? Does anyone else's cat do this?

My female cat does this. No idea why

Timeforatincture · 01/10/2025 15:05

Because she's a cat. They like to be awkward. I've got one like that.

NebulousSadTimes · 01/10/2025 15:13

Cats always gonna cat, they do not want to make our lives easy 😻

One does this so sometimes you'll move out your warm spot and she can nab it - other becuase she a cat and likes to be difficult.

Ahsheeit · 01/10/2025 15:18

Because she can.

MyOtherProfile · 01/10/2025 15:18

Welcome to the world of cats. Ours is not to reason why.

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 01/10/2025 15:24

😅 I think she wants you to follow her/her lead. Cats are very good at getting what they want from humans!! Or my elderly cat is anyway!

HRTQueen · 01/10/2025 15:47

my cat sometimes does this. she always likes to be close but sometimes doesn't want to be fussed over though she wants to make sure she has my attention. If I place my hand next to her she purrs and prefers me to not move

purplepie1 · 01/10/2025 16:58

She doesn’t want cuddles but wants something else like food, drink or let out. When they do this you have to get up and follow her.

warmapplepies · 01/10/2025 17:10

Are you sure it's fuss she's after and not something else?

OSTMusTisNT · 01/10/2025 17:17

They want your company but not the fussing that comes with it.

One of mine does similar and it seems to be when they want a proper deep sleep rather than a half asleep getting fussed over cuddly puss.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 01/10/2025 17:20

May sound like a daft question but she's not calico or tortoiseshell is she?

My girl cat was a Calico and she was like this. She demanded attention but never wanted to be handled much. She definitely wasn't a laid back lap cat. They have a reputation for being very independent and quite temperamental which is something to do with their genetic make-up.

beezlebubnicky · 01/10/2025 17:20

Cats are social, but in a different way to what you might expect. For them, social can be sitting nearby, in the same room as you or as one of my cats does, on the landing outside 😅. They still feel close to you.

AmpleLilacQuail · 01/10/2025 17:21

My initial thought was also that she wants to show you something / wants you to follow her!

But also, cats are funny wee things and you never truly know what’s going on in those little heads. So it could be nothing 🤣

VikaOlson · 01/10/2025 17:22

Mine does this when she's hungry.

I have one of each sisters - neither is lap cats but will sit on legs under covers in beds but never downstairs - there it's next to you but often not allowed to pet.

Ddakji · 01/10/2025 17:24

All our cats have done this. Male and female. It’s just to remind you of who’s in charge.

QueenClinomania · 01/10/2025 17:25

Mine does it to trick me into moving then she leaps into my chair and pretends to be asleep.

This absolutely!!

Our cat does this when he wants something but not fuss. Usually when he wants food.

Love the way they move just out of your reach!

shellyleppard · 01/10/2025 17:26

Think its just a cat being an arse thing....one of my cats will literally sit on your chest asking for fuss. The other one.... just out of reach Lol

Blueuggboots · 01/10/2025 17:36

Mine does this, except he stretches up and pokes me with his nails THEN stands just out of reach. He gets offended if I pick him up?! Doofus.

Octavia64 · 01/10/2025 17:39

My calico female does this.

both males do not.

MyOtherProfile · 01/10/2025 20:21

It's definitely not always because they want something. Ours has free access to her food, water and the back garden. All her needs are met. She will still demand fuss and sit just out of reach.

Middlemarch123 · 01/10/2025 20:33

They’re cats.
They do it because they can.
End of.
My Persian, Chairman Meow, flirts shamelessly, all cute and slow blinking kisses, rolls on his back, look at my squishy tummy….As soon as you reach in for a cuddle he swipes your hand away. He sits on top of the bookshelf, mewing to be carried down, so you reach up to get the little sod, and he knocks a few book off the shelf, every single time. Because he can.

APatternGrammar · 01/10/2025 20:34
