Ibuprofen and paracetamol is this correct

Eggybreadwithnuts · 30/09/2025 22:57

After a tooth extraction this morning and in tons of pain, have been alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen.

ibuprofen- Just read the box and says only 1 x tablet 3 times a day they are 400mg. I've taken 2 x tablets twice!!!

This is what I've had today...I've had too much ibuprofen I think

10am paracetamol x 2
1pm ibuprofen x 2 400mg
4pm paracetamol x 2
8pm ibuprofen x 2 400mg
10.50pm x 2 paracetamol

I am a medical professional but you have no way of knowing if I really am. I would encourage you to ring a late night pharmacist or probably easier, 111 for advice. This is a straightforward question for them to talk you through, don’t panic.

dementedpixie · 30/09/2025 23:03

The bnf seems to say in some cases 600mg can be taken 4 times per day so you haven't overdosed

You have to be careful with ibuprofen as they sell different doses, the standard pack is 200, but 400 is also sold.

You can have up to 4 x paracetamol in 24 hours, so you could have another dose if that in the night. I don’t think the overdose of ibuprofen is as dangerous as paracetamol would be, but it might be worth calling 111 to check as you’ve had double the dosage.

Hope you’re feeling better soon.

VikaOlson · 30/09/2025 23:10

You've had one to many ibuprofen so don't take any more!

Eggybreadwithnuts · 30/09/2025 23:12

Im sure its fine, paracetamol def ok as had them 6 hours apart.

The ibuprofen I had at 1pm then 8pm so 7 hours apart. But took 2 each time instead of 1. But according to the chart someone's posted is OK.

Definitely will be taking just 1 tomorrow

Get some nuromol OP, it's Ibu and paracetamol combined so avoids confusion and I'd excellent for tooth pain

I wouldn’t worry, just double check the dosage on the ibuprofen packet tomorrow.

No need honestly OP.

Ignore the PP, you'll be fine without bothering 111.

There's nothing they can do anyway and they're hardly likely to say go to hospital for a stomach pump!

Nofksleft2give · 30/09/2025 23:23

Don’t take ibuprofen on an empty stomach, always with food.

Haggisfish3 · 30/09/2025 23:23

You’ll be fine on the ibuprofen. The maximum dose for twenty four hours is 3200mg on prescription. Supposed to be maximum of 1200mg over the counter but you’ll be fine.

CherryCola427 · 30/09/2025 23:26

If it makes you feel any better, I had a year of taking high-strength cocodamol and Naproxen prescribed by my GP, every single day, when waiting for a physio appointment. 111 are not medical professionals.

Rang 111 operator getting nurse to call me back when I don't know so having to sit up and wait now!

CherryCola427 · 30/09/2025 23:31

You haven’t overdosed on either medication but you should ideally take ibuprofen with food (a glass of milk if you can’t face eating.) Don’t take other paracetamol-based medication like Night Nurse. If you had injections for the extraction that can make you feel a bit panicky. My dentists used to make me drink Lucozade after injections because the adrenaline in them can make people shaky.

@Haggisfish3 I've taken
1pm 2 x 400mg
8pm 2 x 400mg
Instead of 1 tablet each time

So 1600mg but a good 7 hours apart

Well good luck with that.

It's such a needless low priority call, you could be waiting hours.

Yes, 111 call handlers just ask questions and they have a chart to tell them whether a clinician should call you back as a precaution. You haven’t overdosed - please try not to panic.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 30/09/2025 23:36

Phoning 111 is a complete waste of resources. All you have to do is make sure you don’t take anymore for a while.

justasking111 · 30/09/2025 23:36

Those 400mg ibuprofen caught me out the first time. DH got them from pharmacy for me. We're so used to taking two pills.

But I'm still here

@CherryCola427 I've not eaten anything earlier due to area throbbing but did have a can of luke warm soup around 7.30pmish just before the 8pm dose.

I definitely will know for future reference!

@Eggybreadwithnuts
I'm prescribed 600mg of Ibuprofen, 4 times a day for Endo. Im pretty sure the highest dose of Ibuprofen is 900mg, 4 times a day ( 3600mg total a day )
Hope your pain eases soon 💐

It’s only because of a small risk it may irritate the lining of your stomach, which is unlikely in a day. The PP who posted the BNF chart is right about the dosage.
