Non running car, how to get rid of?

Susiesstalls · 29/09/2025 00:38

my old car is from 2006, diesel. I used it for work and then the new ulez came closer to work/home so I used my husbands car as he commuted via train.
Anyhow it now doesn’t run as I’ve not used it but I don’t how to get rid of it. I’ve tried listing it on eBay for very very cheap, I’ve put a lot of work into keeping it going. Obviously I’m not expecting the money back but am just disappointed it’s not even selling for parts at this rate!

I’m reluctant to scrap it as I know it would still run very well with time and care but at the same time I’m paying unnecessary road tax and insurance.
But then just had a thought and we don’t want any more diesel cars driving around do we, so maybe I should just scrap it.

Any advice on how to get rid of it please. Including companies or links. Tia

Scrap it my son had a car that he got to use for a few months was constanly breaking down etc so he
stopped using it for 3 months or so and drove mine whilst he was looking at new cars.

He eventuarly contacted a company called Redcorn online.

They let you know if they will take it and how much if anything they will pay.

They paid more than he expected and came to pick it up within a few days. They will tell you what paperwork to have on hand on collection. Really good service.

CalmShaker · 29/09/2025 01:51

I think the average scrap price paid on a car they collect from you is around £120. How far off of that are you advertising it for?
If you advertise can you park it on a driveway until it's sold? It's quick to declare a car off-road on the DVLA site and then you can take off the insurance too.

Susiesstalls · 29/09/2025 09:54

Thanks for advice both, I’ve advertised it for £200 on auction. It’s just it recently had an MOT so I know it still drives well but as I didn’t cater to it it stopped running. Bloody car. But then again I should perceive that as a shit car that doesn’t work properly so yes will scrap it!

Our driveway only fits one car unfortunately.
I’ll get the ball rolling on scrapping it, thank you for advising redcorn @Oxo01

@Susiesstalls
Good luck i think they paid £190 for his (but he would have given it away for free just to get it taken away)

But I suppose it depends on individual cars etc.
Let us know how you get on.

Nobumsonthetable · 01/10/2025 16:54

We buy any car? Worth a shot?

TheRelevantTrumpeter · 29/10/2025 09:42

Depends on the scrap value but the fire service near me will collect cars and use them in training.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/10/2025 11:05

A local garage took my friend’s car for scrap, for free, but kept the scrap value.

thisishowloween · 29/10/2025 11:11

Just scrap it.

CalmShaker · 29/10/2025 12:31

That's really good 👍 guess if the car still has a demand as parts it's best thing for it

FinallyHere · 29/10/2025 12:35

Just don’t be like my clueless DSis & BiL who paid their local garage to keep the car after its last service.

yup, paid for the work done to service and then more on top for the garage to not deliver the working car back again

sigh

Doris86 · 01/11/2025 20:24

Put it on E bay for 99p starting bid and let it mind its own value.

If it’s not running because you haven’t used it , then it’s probably just a flat battery. Charge battery or get a new one. If you advertise it as a non runner people are probably assuming it has major engine failure or something. Advertising it as a runner will massively increase interest and the price you get for it. It would be silly to give it away cheap for the sake of a new battery.

Knowsley · 01/11/2025 20:29

Are you sure you couldn't get it going again? The first thing I'd check is if it's a flat battery.
Have you tried to get it started, and if so, how?

The battery might be dead not just flat.

Susiesstalls · 15/11/2025 18:12

@Knowsley @Doris86 I haven’t got any further since my post lol so I thought I’d add- the garage changed to a new battery and car was running fine for about a week. Didn’t drive it for 2 maybe 3 days and that was it, hasn’t started since then making it a non runner? Absolutely gutted as I had a buyer coming but then that happened!

I really don’t want to scrap because there is life somewhere but then again if it won’t start after a new battery and 2/3 days of not driving then it really doesn’t count as a working car.

still taking advice from anyone, if you have any!
have been thinking of either redcorn, eBay or nationwide salvage. Tia !

Ask a friend or neighbour if they have some jump leads, and see if you can jump start it.

It might be that the glow plugs need a clean. - I had a diesel and i could just not get through to the AA persons that it wasn't a flat battery. After about 4 call outs, we replaced them ourselves.

What car is it? (Make, model, engine size?)

Did you have any warning lights showing when you last used it?
e.g, 'battery' light. If you did,it might be the alternator.

Susiesstalls · 26/11/2025 09:16

Hi @Knowsley thanks for your reply. I completely missed this but appreciate your advice.
it’s an Audi a3 2006 2l diesel so very old and no use to me (ulez) not sure if it’s any good to anyone!

I’ve changed the battery at least 4 times in the last 3 years and car seems to be running fine afterwards. Have jumped started each time there was a problem But only new battery seems to solve it. Then again after not running after 2-3 days it just won’t start at all even with jump starting.

I can’t remember if I’ve seen a light, I feel like I have but i’m really not sure! My friend has said it must be the alternator.

If that is the problem shall I just scrap it?

OP posts:
Doris86 · 26/11/2025 10:52

Maybe an alternator fault? That would explain why it runs with a new battery, but then stops after a couple of days.

But you want to get rid, so probably not worth messing around with. I’d put it on E bay with a 99p starting bid, list the faults, and see how much you get for it. You’ll likely get more money than a scrapyard would offer you.

Rhubarbandgooseburycrumble · 26/11/2025 10:53

When one of my cars finally died I gave it up a charity that comes collects them and they get the scrap value.

GasPanic · 26/11/2025 11:04

There are companies that will come and take it away. Just google on the net

I got £250 for mine which was £100 more than the well known "buy anything" site, the somewhat annoying thing is that it is still running !

If you put it on well known auction sites there is a chance people will turn up and then moan it isn't as described and try to bargain you down. It's a pain in the ass and I would just rather have a single price to take it away (even though it may be less) than deal with some of the shady characters that seem to inhabit those places.

TheNightingalesStarling · 26/11/2025 11:25

If you live in a ULEZ area no one is going to want it.
The car has reached the end of its useful life and is only good for scrap now. A car that breaks down regularly and requires expensive maintenance isn't something you can sell.

Knowsley · 26/11/2025 13:11

I've looked at prices in Autotrader within 50 miles of where I live (I'm just outside the ULEZ). The results were £700 for a non-runner to £2240 for a decent-looking one from a dealer.

It’s definitely something you can sell. List it honestly and there will always be someone who wants to buy it, either to fix up themselves or break for spares parts etc. Just because it doesn’t work doesn’t mean there is no market for it.

It’s likely to cost you more to fix than you’d get for the car. We sold our v old Hyundai recently to one of these companies, they ask if it runs or not. Basically up to them if they want to fix it and sell it on, use it for parts or scrap it. They just came and took it away on a truck.

BadgernTheGarden · 26/11/2025 15:13

If you take it a scrap dealer they weigh it and give you the scrap metal price. Do you know anyone who would tow it? A local scrap dealer may pick it up but probably then wouldn't pay much. You could try the 'we buy any car' type people, does it just need a battery or a jump start, it would be much more attractive if it would at least tick over so they know the engine works. Selling privately could be a pain, however much you explain the condition people still come back and complain, I couldn't do with the hassle.

Talipesmum · 26/11/2025 15:19

FWIW we got about £150 for our 2007 Hyundai. There are loads of websites where they give you an instant valuation based on the reg plate. Masses less hassle than trying to sell it on eBay.
