Are these vintage shoes worth the asking price?

AndreaMarvell · 26/09/2025 22:39

These shoes are from 1973. I collect vintage items, but I think the price is totally stupid.

What do you think?

Vintage Manfield 1970s Ladies Lace Up Tri Colour Platform Shoes Size 5 | eBay UK

I have owned these for 25 years, they date from around 1973, from UK shoe shop Manfield. very Glam Rock similarto the stylesworn by Slade, these are imitation patent leather lace up with a block heel. I have never seen another pair of these, ideal for...

To be honest, aren’t things like this just worth what someone is willing to pay for them?

I’d go with this. What’s probably happened here is eBay has suggested a price based upon the selling price of similar items. That might be why it’s such an odd number, particularly if previous items were auctioned.

Supersimkin7 · 27/09/2025 13:52

They’ll have perished - unwearable. Cheap shoes fall to bits with age.

BatchCookBabe · 27/09/2025 14:02

As a pp said, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I think they're minging personally, and wouldn't spend a fiver on them. I don't remember these ever being out/being popular. They're awful! 🙈

@BatchCookBabe i think Noddy Holder must still have a few bob

saveforthat · 27/09/2025 14:08

I had a really similar pair in the 70s but they were cream and brown. Wish I'd held on to them now.

amicisimma · 27/09/2025 14:32

How much do you want the shoes? How much do you want the £234.68?

Myself, I don't want the shoes at all, but I could really do with £234.68. Someone else might really want the shoes and think £234.68 is nothing. Which are you?

MeatballMenu · 27/09/2025 14:53

I've never paid over £50, and I think this seller is taking the absolute Mickey

So don't buy them then.

FeliciaFancybottom · 27/09/2025 17:39

😬they look disgusting.

Are these vintage shoes worth the asking price?
CalzoneOnLegs · 27/09/2025 17:40

@FeliciaFancybottom

They have actual mildew on them - such a steal at £225 🦠

CelestialGazer · 27/09/2025 18:12

Maybe if you’re a very patriotic flag waving Belgian or German then they could be worth it. But otherwise probably not…

ItsNotYou852 · 27/09/2025 18:20

They are over 50 years old, and amazing, in fact probably unique by now.
The seller may not get that price but I doubt they will be taking offers of £50 unless they have been running for a couple of years.
If you are interested just put in what you are prepared to offer, but be ready to be turned down!

SliceofTosst · 27/09/2025 18:45

I would love to see a photo of the original owner wearing them and what they would say about them now.

Offer what you consider a good price and see what they come back with. Worth a punt.

Panama2 · 27/09/2025 18:50

I never liked them first time round and they are not a good brand. Ravel and Sacha had nicer shoes.

not worth that kind of money

SixtySomething · 27/09/2025 18:50

AndreaMarvell · 26/09/2025 22:47

Well yes, that's true. I go to a lot of vintage fairs, and see a lot of these sort of things. Never in my life have I seen this sort of price, though. I've never paid over £50, and I think this seller is taking the absolute Mickey.

The Mickey is exactly what Ebay is about a lot of the time, not always, though.
This is exactly the kind of thing people will ask stupid prices for, thinking there's bound to be someone out there stupid enough to pay.
I think it makes a great big difference to the worth if they are in mint condition, come in their original box with bag and receipt.
More likely, though, that they come with vintage 1980s mud still attached.
From my recollection, Manfred was a typical high street shop, one of many. So it's not like they are hand made or from a short run .,,,

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/09/2025 19:05

Nope, you can get these for just under 20 quid and they are almost identical.

My 5 yo sister had a similar pair in red, yellow and navy blue, which my mum bought at a discount shoe shop. She would’ve paid about £1.50 in about 1973 so I think this seller is seriously taking the piss 🤣

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 27/09/2025 19:12

Manfield was not a high-class brand, not good quality.
The vendor is taking the piss.

FourIsNewSix · 27/09/2025 20:18

I suppose on fairs people are pricing to sell.
Online, they can price to try their luck, they can always re-list later for much less, but if someone would be willing to pay it, there is no harm in trying to find them

AltitudeCheck · 27/09/2025 20:31

Imitation leather!... they'll be so brittle they'll fall apart. Offer £20.... I bet they know they are taking the piss!

ChocolateBoxCottage · 27/09/2025 20:40

CalzoneOnLegs · 27/09/2025 13:28

The glue and plastic will be degraded beyond repair by now, seller can dream on with that asking price

This. They will fall apart the first time you wear them.

TimeForATerf · 27/09/2025 21:07

That seller has loads of shite for sale, all expensive. I bet he or she struggles to shift any of it, if you took it to the tip the waste men wouldn’t be pulling that lot back out of the skip.

AndreaMarvell · 28/09/2025 15:21

AutumnCosy2025 · 27/09/2025 08:14

Exactly. Or are you the seller trying to boost interest in them??

No, I am not the seller. Thanks for your cynicism! If I were, I would be on different platforms to Mumsnet - vintage fair, perhaps?

Well this drives a lot of viewings of the listing, people do it.

its your hobby, you're the one supposedly buying this type of stuff, you know your budget....

I was 4 when they were new. You'd need to get them seen to by a specialist to make them safe to wear if that's your aim. It's a lot of money to just have them as decoration, but people spends thousands on other ornaments. 💁🏻‍♀️
