Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi,
So this isn't so much what would you do. But has this happened to you?

It appears that a mystery 10k has landed in my current account... I took some money out of (hole in the wall on Sunday and I had x amount), yesterday it had gone up by £10k...I've not got my online banking available at the moment - but I have checked my paper statement from earlier in the month, and I know I have not personally paid in £10k.

The people that could have done this are limited - in terms of who has this info my bank details , and even more limited by who would have such surplus cash and more limited in who would give it to me.
I will obviously go into my bank next week to flag this. My question is just has this happened to anyone before.
I did hope it might be a People's Postcode win - but no dice. I can't think of anything else. I will flag it next week at the bank - but wondered how likely it was an admin error..do these things happen?
Obviously I won't spend it - but just curious. If you won the lottery can you just pay money to someone anonymously? I guess it is just a glitch.

Just ring bank and ask?

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 24/09/2025 14:08

My bank is not very helpful at the best of times and I never ring them. I ususally go online or into branch.

Madness

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 24/09/2025 14:12

What is madness?

It sometimes happens if people get the account number they intend to pay into wrong. Banks do check more closely recently, matching names as well as account numbers but still possible. It could also be some sort of scam or money laundering, if you can't identify where it came from and that it is your money talk to your bank who will find out.

What a ridiculous answer! Yet you’ll mess around on Mumsnet making a big deal about it. Just ring the bloody bank!

Showerflowers · 24/09/2025 14:14

You not just picking the phone up and asking the bank who has deposited 10 grand into your bank. Instead you’ve decided to ask Mumsnet if this has ever happened to anyone else. Madness

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 24/09/2025 14:14

'A big deal' Dorb. It was a quick query as to whether this had happened to anyone else on my lunch break. Jeez.

I spent a happy hour recently trying to get past my bank chat AI (no telephone number available for customer service!). AI had no idea what I was talking about, too complicated for it. I had to keep repeating 'I need to talk to a person' a few times before it eventually relented and put a person onto the chat, who sorted it in a couple of minutes!

twobabiesandapup · 24/09/2025 14:17

I’d say you need to access your online banking for it to show where the transaction has originated from. Either the app or desktop site? Alternatively can you call the generic number on the back of your bank card to confirm recent transactions?

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 24/09/2025 14:18

Thanks all. I guess I was just interested if this had happened to anyone else. I can sort it - it was just a surprise.

If the initial staff member isn't great ask to be put through to the fraud department.. They can delve deeper into your account...

twobabiesandapup · 24/09/2025 14:22

Well wishing you lots of luck that it turns out to be genuine and that you are the recipient of an extra £10k that you didn’t know about! Now if you could pass some of that good luck onto me that would be great 🤣

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 24/09/2025 14:23

thank you 2 babies and a pup... I imagine it is an error rather than a mysterious benefactor - I'll let you know.

Just phone them it’ll take 5 mins

RandomUsernameHere · 24/09/2025 14:25

Have you entered any competitions, played the lottery or do you hold premium bonds etc? It could be a prize. Anyone who has your bank account details could have transferred the money. Hopefully it’s not a mistake!

BrieAndChilli · 24/09/2025 14:25

I wouldnt be leaving this until next week to sort out - I would be checking in case someone has gotten access to bank account and is using it to launder money. Especially as you say you do not have access to internet banking - could this be connected? What is the issue with your online access?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/09/2025 14:26

BE CAREFUL!

Do nothing at this time.
Sometimes people transfer some money to an account and then contact you and say it was a mistake and ask you pay it into another account.
If this happens say 'no' and get the bank to reverse the transaction to the original sending account (if they will).
It is how some money laundering works, and there is a risk that you are flagged as being complicit.

CafeDuck · 24/09/2025 14:24

You've clearly never tried to have a phone conversation with my bank! Last time I tried I spent 18 minutes in the queue then was passed around to a couple of people before it was sorted.

CoolPlayer · 24/09/2025 14:29

It’s it’s a mistake (I have heard about it happening before) it will be taken back out / needed to give back so don’t go spending it all. Hope you have won some mystery competition or something tho! x

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 24/09/2025 14:30

My assumption would be an erroneous payment that will get clawed back.

Notfeelinit · 24/09/2025 14:30

Hey OP, woah you’ve had some grouchy replies on here! 😬

It’s not happened to me but it does make me wonder about whether it is someone hacking your account to do something fraudulent, possibly laundering(?). As someone said above you’ll get more traction asking to speak to the banks fraud dept if you call them, rather than the standard call centre bods.

Hopefully it is a mystery benefactor though and you get to keep it!

Wishing you all the best OP and let us know how you get on (and whether it is something we should all be keeping an eye out for if it’s a scam/ fraud) x

spiderlight · 24/09/2025 14:31

Oh - is that where I put it? Silly me! Just pop it back to me, please (I wish!)

I hope you manage to sort it out and that it's a nice little windfall from a legitimate source.

DiscoBob · 24/09/2025 14:32

It hasn't happened to me no. Just go onto online banking as soon as you can.
I'm not sure but they might have no power to take it back by force? Don't hold me to that though.

I've heard of people typing in wrong account deets and it goes to a stranger. The bank claimed they couldn't get the money back if the person who had it doesn't respond or agree?
