Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi,
So this isn't so much what would you do. But has this happened to you?

It appears that a mystery 10k has landed in my current account... I took some money out of (hole in the wall on Sunday and I had x amount), yesterday it had gone up by £10k...I've not got my online banking available at the moment - but I have checked my paper statement from earlier in the month, and I know I have not personally paid in £10k.

The people that could have done this are limited - in terms of who has this info my bank details , and even more limited by who would have such surplus cash and more limited in who would give it to me.
I will obviously go into my bank next week to flag this. My question is just has this happened to anyone before.
I did hope it might be a People's Postcode win - but no dice. I can't think of anything else. I will flag it next week at the bank - but wondered how likely it was an admin error..do these things happen?
Obviously I won't spend it - but just curious. If you won the lottery can you just pay money to someone anonymously? I guess it is just a glitch.

As pp say, if you get any kind of call saying there's been a "mistake" and you need to transfer the money out- DO NOT TRANSFER IT . Don't touch it, and speaking directly to your bank isn't a bad idea.

nomas · 24/09/2025 14:42

Do you get any benefits? Might be an overpayment.

Unorganisedchaos2 · 24/09/2025 14:58

Probably not as very specific and a round amount but in the past few years have you made a claim against a company, mis sold what-not etc . This happened to me a few years ago (although no where near 10K it was far more than I expected)

I googled the name on the statement and put it onto my email and made the connection to a claim a made years before and the administrators had only just finished liquidating and paying everyone

This.

You really need to pop into a branch and ask some questions - but if it's unexpected and you don't recongise who paid it in or can't yet see then it's very probably a mistake or an attempt at fraud/money laundering.

It could be lottery or insurance payment/refund - but I'd expect you to have some awareness that was even a vauge possiblity.

Unfortunately this hasn't happened to me

Just leave it and see

@CarmellaSopranosKitchen
Let us know when you find out what’s happened. Definitely investigate via your bank, just in case someone is up to not good and trying to scam you.
Could you send them a secure message via your app.
OR call 159 which is the UK phone number for financial queries for all main banks.
I called this number recently when I had a one time passcode sent via text for a £400 transaction I didn’t recognise on my credit card. They stopped my card (Saturday evening) and the new one arrived on Wednesday.

stuckonaloop · 24/09/2025 17:08

Do you have online banking / banking app? Surely it would say where it’s from ?

When I was a child early 90s I had 50k put into my kids saver account in error

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 29/09/2025 17:14

Okay, sorry for delay responding....I went into my bank and it was a CRAdvice Confirms with a long digit and a name I didn't recognise - but with the same surname. Think Anthony Fielding - I don;t know an Anthony Fielding but I did have an Tony that was in the family - but he died 2 years ago overseas.

Apparently it is an American bank transfer.

So is it yours or not?

squeaver · 29/09/2025 17:20

Maybe your relation's estate has only just been settled and you have received an inheritance - but someone would have contacted you for your bank details to receive it.

It sounds more likely that someone has made a mistake when organsing the payment and it has ended up in your account. They may ask for it back.

Did your bank have any advice on what you should do?

AutumnCosy2025 · 29/09/2025 17:21

Sounds like an inheritance pay out, but how did they get your bank details?

squeaver · 29/09/2025 17:22

From Which

What to do if someone sends you money in error
If you receive money in your account which has been sent in error, contact your bank straight away to report it.
If you keep and spend the money knowing you weren't the intended recipient, you could be charged with 'retaining wrongful credit'.

fourelementary · 29/09/2025 17:22

oh how exciting!!! I’d love a mystery £10K!!!

ThreePears · 29/09/2025 17:59

If it has come from an overseas bank, they would have needed the full name of the account, the number, sort code, IBAN number or SWIFT/BIC code in order to make the payment. So this isn't accidental.

Who they are and what it is for is another matter. They must have got your bank details somehow. They will also have had to go through all the money laundering hoops. Is it exactly £10,000? Because that would be unusual for an American bank as they would ordinarily be paying you in dollars and you'd get the sterling equivalent at the prevailing exchange rate.

@CarmellaSopranosKitchen If some randomer asks for it back, be very wary indeed. Sometimes people have been contacted by whoever is purportedly the sender of the payment made 'by mistake' and arranged to send the money back, only to have the original amount recalled as well. Scammy McScamface.

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 02/10/2025 11:24

Thank you for all of the advice. The bank was very helpful indeed. And let's just say that I'm not the only person to have received it in my family. I only found that recently. So it's a good outcome, and I don;t want to say too much more . But all the advice given about taking care with unknown amounts of money is correct. Thank you to those that did give good advice.
