“Once I had ten”

secondary age kids are a different breed, right? I checked in on ds1 12, about his breakfast. He had had 4 weetabix and a banana. I exclaimed a little about eating 4, and he informed me that one time this year he ate 10. 10 weetabix, well wheat biscuits I buy own brand.

how many weetabix could your kids eat? He’s not overweight and he’s pretty active, we only have semi skimmed milk and he probably didn’t eat again until his packed lunch.

ive just had two that I microwaved with some milk and I couldn’t eat another 😆

He was still in nappies at the time, so hard to say.

UnbeatenMum · 24/09/2025 12:26

10 weetabix is actually only 680 calories. Let's say he used 500ml semi skimmed milk, which would be another 250 calories so 730 in total. An active 12 year old could be using 3000 in a day so 730 for breakfast seems ideal!

FurForksSake · 24/09/2025 12:29

And the half a box of icing sugar? 😆

And the half a box of icing sugar? 😆

Ah...

FurForksSake · 24/09/2025 12:33

To be fair it wouldn’t have been that much, but he always puts some on. I know as he leaves a cloud on the work surface. He tells me it’s so I know he’s eaten 😆

This morning he just had the three. And at least left me a dribble of milk for my porridge. I chose not to have weetabix to save them for him.

He asked for coco pops for next week, he must think I’m a millionaire!

odd boy, be wakes up at 6.30 eats breakfasts in front of cartoons in the kitchen and then goes back to bed till 7.30, washed dresses and leaves the house for 7.55 😆

Aldi own brand coco pops. They are not very filling though. He'll need the whole box.

Zippidydoodah · 24/09/2025 12:39

My 13-year-old son could easily eat 6 or 8 of the things when he was much younger. He’s “gone off them” now though 🙄

BlackeyedSusan · 24/09/2025 12:41

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 24/09/2025 11:25

Yes, weetabix poos are a thing. 😬

Explains a lot. Wink

FurForksSake · 24/09/2025 12:43

@BlackeyedSusan I need smaller bowls 😆

Mm, salted caramel porridge sounds nice. Gonna try that!

Me too....might have it for my lunch 😁

I would have four, with sugar so thick it left teeth marks. I would think a teen would have three or four. We have full fat milk which would be cold. Hot milk makes them soggy.

We eat them soggy in this house - just enough hot water to soak them through before adding the milk.

DonnaTellMeMore · 24/09/2025 13:34

My DS (15) can easily manage that most mornings. He’s very active (lacrosse & rugby) so I suppose he needs it, but I’m still a bit shocked watching the box disappear so quickly.

FurForksSake · 24/09/2025 13:38

I’m considering buying a cow…

OP posts:
steppemum · 24/09/2025 14:39

when my ds was a teen he regularly had 4-6 weetabix for breakfast.
Or two huge bowls of shreddies.

Walkingbkwrm · 24/09/2025 14:46

Usually 4 each for my two but the 15 year old has cheese and boiled eggs as well. 10 does seem a lot! We get through so much milk - I could do with a cow as well :).

Blueuggboots · 24/09/2025 15:16

Well my son eats two and flatly refuses to eat 3 or more despite often morning he’s still hungry!!

FurForksSake · 24/09/2025 15:24

We shall send the multi-biscuit boys round for some gentle persuasion 😆

BettyBobble · 24/09/2025 15:26

At that age mine would eat 6-8 but he's a tall lad and rather solid. Definitely not a fragile lad. Not over weight, just robust and muscular

userhallball · 24/09/2025 15:30

A used to work In a school breakfast club and the deputy heads son used to come he would have 6-7 he was only 7, I was always shocked how he could pack them away

FurForksSake · 24/09/2025 15:52

I love this, all these kids laughing at the serving suggestions. They should have an eating competition 😆

It’s weird i grew up with sisters and went to an all girls school. I didn’t know any boys growing up, maybe a cousin I’d see at Christmas. As a teen girl eating was not the done thing 😆

he’s also got a thing for easy peelers at the moment, he only likes plain crisps and he’s not a chocolate fiend. So it could be worse!

I couldn’t stop eating as a girl! I used to be able to destroy a loaf of bread in one day 😂

TheJeanQueen · 24/09/2025 19:36

It’s because they’re our children and we’re mumsnetters. Mumsnet changes the genes to produce male offspring that play multiple sports for the county, are way taller that average and have hollow legs. Oh how I laugh each morning at my 6 foot 5, shoe size 15, 13 year old son eating a whole pack of 24 Weetabix and a whole loaf toasted, before asking what’s for lunch. What are they like? My daughter would never need to do such thing obviously. Half a Weetabix and she couldn’t possibly manage anymore, she’s obviously tall and slim, being a daughter of a mumsnetter. Oh how we laugh.

FurForksSake · 24/09/2025 19:50

He doesn’t play any sports for county and is a short arse. I don’t have daughters and neither does anyone in my close family, we all produced boys.

Growing up as a girl in a grammar school I survived most days on cigarettes, cider and crisps.

I’d suggest that unless you want to cause issues with food, that you don’t comment, ‘exclaim’ even on your son eating a pretty normal breakfast for his age, other than the shit load of icing sugar, but that was not what you exclaimed at, it was the 4 Weetabix. I know so many people that have parents with some sort of issues around food that say their parents commented on what they ate growing up, often giving them food issues. Parents addressing their own food issues and not commenting on normal amounts that their children eat would be better

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/09/2025 21:18

When ds1 was a toddler - still at the age of needing to be spoon fed - I gave him 1.5 weetabix for his breakfast - that was his usual amount. That day, he asked for more, so I gave him another one, which he ate - and then asked for more again. So I gave him another - he asked for more. I gave him more each time he asked - I wanted to see how much weetabix one under-two-year-old boy could hold - and the answer was 5.5!

He really didn’t want much to eat for the rest of that day, and his nappies were appalling.
