He walks like a penguin

For the last few weeks I have noticed a tall, rangy young man out walking in the evenings. He is dressed in normal exercise gear.

He barely swings his arms as he walks and his stride length is borderline mincing for his height. He seems very fit, healthy and well built with no visible injuries. Reminds me of a Seinfeld episode.

Why? There is really no purpose to this post other than why?

Presumably some kind of health condition that impacts his gait? Not that hard to imagine, is it?

Daphnedot · 20/09/2025 05:00

Mincing? Thats so rude. Could be a range of things.

Trentdarkmore · 20/09/2025 05:14

I mince sometimes, particularly when going downhill. In my case, it's s combination of visual processing disorder, trying to see through varifocals, dyspraxia and weak knee muscles.
Gosh, I sound attractive...

Maybe it’s time you realized that not everyone’s the same? That you can look fit and healthy and still have issues with your feet and hips? None of which is any of your business. And “mincing”? Just …no.

Whenthetimeisright · 20/09/2025 07:13

How really nasty to start a thread about this .
I walk in what some consider a peculiar way. As do a lot of autistic people. And was once openly ridiculed for it by a group of workmen. And it was mortifying.

Why do some people have to be so unnecessarily unpleasant?

JustStopItNorasaurus · 20/09/2025 07:17

I walk with a very strange gait. I have arthritis in both hips and one knee. I also have a bulging disc in mhy spine and fibromyalgia that drastically affects my walking abilities when I am having a flare.

One of my colleagues is early 50s and has parkinsons disease.

He might be young and look quite fit and healthy, but anything could be going on including an accident.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 20/09/2025 07:18

I'm not familiar with the word mincing. Can anyone explain please?

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 20/09/2025 07:22

I can kind of imagine noticing a person had an unusual gait, I cannot for one second imagine posting about it on Mumsnet!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 20/09/2025 07:23

@ThisCanFuckOffToo yeah and being nasty enough to say someone looks like a penguin!!

Fruitlips · 20/09/2025 07:25

I picture you at your window Op
just watching
the world go by
all day. Every day

ThePinkPoster · 20/09/2025 07:25

My son walks a bit like that. he leans slightly forward, his feet point outwards, he walks really fast and his arms don’t swing.

He’s autistic.

I tend to go through life imagining most people are kind and respectful and then someone posts something like this and I am reminded there are some right arseholes about.

People walk how they walk!

I imagine because literally nothing else going on in this OP’s life

BogRollBOGOF · 20/09/2025 07:37

DH had an unusual sway to his walk. He was a bit round-shouldered until he went to the gym and strengthed up his upper body.

His ankles also tended to roll in which is better since getting supportive insoles and strength work.

People do have interesting and varied gaits to their walk. I'm better at recognising people from their movements than their faces.

It’s a name for the sort of walk that apparantly gay people have. According to homophobes. Think 1970s sitcoms. Mr Whatever his name was from Are You Being Served?

landlordhell · 20/09/2025 07:39

What a horrible post.

Quintsharkfishing · 20/09/2025 07:39

Isn't this an Olympic sport? Power walking? That's what it sounds like.

Fruitlips · 20/09/2025 07:42

Please say you don’t have children op

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/09/2025 07:47

Maybe he's humming 'Walk Like an Egyptian' by the Bangles to himself, but can't quite remember how Egyptians walk?

I thought the same.

It's sad that someone would stoop so low by starting their day posting about the gait of a total stranger.

Get a life @CrocsNotDocs

Chiefangel · 20/09/2025 07:56

What an empty sad life you lead.

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 20/09/2025 07:59

I waddle when I'm tired because I've got arthritis in one hip and one foot.
Your man is out and about getting fresh air and exercise and you're watching him. I think we have a winner here.

Mine too. I worry so much about it because I almost feels it 'outs him' as being 'different' and hope he's never going to be judged for it or ridiculed.
