Bit of tooth has broken off

As above. But the bit that has broken off now just exposes dental amalgam which is really visible, I’m not in pain currently but the edge is sharp. Will they be able to do anything to salvage it?

Should be able to rebuild it, or put a crown on??

It’s like the exterior of the tooth though like the ‘shell’ so the exterior looks like amalgam now. I’m worried they’ll have to pull it out 😩😩😩😩😩

Honestly, I’d be tempted to gently file the sharp edge with a glass or metal nail file until you can see your dentist. I’ve done this a couple of times when my tongue got sore from a broken tooth edge. Dentist advised me after event, not to, but then did say that during lockdown and the aftermath of no one being able to see their dentists that this was advised with caution!

I had this but the dentist put a composite filling to reconstruct the broken off bit and you'd never know!

Thankfully it’s not hurting too bad unless I intentionally run my tongue over it (which is silly on my behalf I know)

This is what I’m hoping! But I’m worried they won’t be able to do it because there’s a black filling there at the moment? I’m not really sure how it works. I just hate how much I can see the black filling right now

I have this all the time. I’ve got shit teeth.

They usually fill it or you’ll need a crown. They only pull them out if there’s literally nothing left.

BeaLola · 18/09/2025 20:45

Composite filling - could be expensive depending on size

RedRiverShore5 · 18/09/2025 20:46

I had one with a big filling and the tooth cracked, dentist removed all the old black/silver filling and rebuilt it with composite filing, this was a private dentist, cost me £350, I'm not sure a NHS dentist would do it though, it took ages to do.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 18/09/2025 20:54

Same for me Op ! Going to the dentist (private 😩) next week so will be ££££ I’m sure. Don’t want it pulled !

Candleflower12 · 18/09/2025 20:55

Thankfully I’ve got an nhs dentist and I’m on maternity leave I just need reassurance it’s salvageable. I don’t think anyone else would notice the difference at the moment just me

Do they fill it with composite?

I had exactly this and thought it was the end of the tooth.

The dentist said she could give me a filling to repair it. The old black/silver filling was removed and the whole thing was replaced with a white filling. (It was NHS but I had to pay a bit extra to have a white).

I've gone from a knackered old silver/black tooth to a lovely new white one.

This is what I’m hoping they offer to do for me! I honestly don’t mind paying at all. I just hate how it looks right now and I’m actually crying at the effect it’s having on my confidence just in a matter of hours

You will be surprised what can be repaired, composite can be bonded on to this kind of break. I've many a repair like this myself x

This is really reassuring thank you. I’m just so upset it looks awful

Yes mine looked grim too OP. I had to wait a while for the appointment for the proper replacement but the dentist gave me a temporary filling straight away so I didn't have to suffer my broken/black tooth while I waited.

Honestly, the 'new' tooth is so much better than the old one was before. I'm almost glad it happened on reflection.

Thank you for the reassurance! I’m hoping it’s just me being self conscious and not as bad as I think!

I had one repaired last year that broke like this. It was nearly all filling. Often when this happens it's because there's further decay under the filling. The dentist drilled all the way down through several layers of fillings - the oldest one probably dated from the 1980s. I was there 1.5 hours but he did a great job and it feels very solid now and looks better too. I have another tooth that was rebuilt then broke again, and I've now had a 'temporary' filling in it for at least 7 years. DH has an even older temporary one. So based on my experience they should be able to save your tooth. Hope you don't have to wait too long.

If I’m honest I think I can remember when I chipped it (felt a sharp prod after having some granola for breakfast last week - pulled a bit of seed out which in hindsight was probably the piece of chipped tooth!). I ran my tongue over it today and felt rough loooked properly in the mirror at it and only just noticed the chip). I will call tomorrow and see what they say 😩

A piece broke off the back of one of my front teeth. Dentist (private) looked at it and said it was fine (normally they'd try and sting me for £££s to fix). That was 5 years ago and no issues.

I’ve got a white filling on my front tooth from a fall when I was younger - touch wood it’s been fine for 15/20 years! I think with this one I’m worried because there is a black filling in the space the white filling would need to be put 😩

Mine drilled out the old filling, refilled it and built it up. Looks great. NHS but paid an extra £100 for the white filling.
