Is this a reasonable amount of space to leave between cars?

I thought the grey car should have been able to get out (there’s room for them to go back a bit too) but I’ve just been sworn at and threatened to hit my car.

I'm sorry but if you can't get that car out, you shouldn't be on the road. That's absolutely fine. I could get that car out, even if there was the same space behind it. Try parking in London, then you'll learn how to parallel park.

ElectoralControversy · 18/09/2025 14:45

Yes I could get that car out, but I do consider myself an elite reverse parker ⭐ (15 years in driveway-less terraced houses)

I wouldn't assume that some random neighbour could though...but I also don't think they should take their lack of parking ability out on you.

Jom222 · 18/09/2025 14:46

I'm confused-which car is facing the wrong direction? Whichever car is against traffic is the wrong party.

My late father is rolling in his grave, he drilled it into us kids to NEVER EVER park against traffic.

Also one only needs a few inches to get out of this parking, whoever is crying about that is a lazy bastard. I lived somewhere for a few years with street parking on one side of the road only, we all learned to pack our cars in very tightly and anyone who cried about it was scoffed at endlessly until they learned to park or just fucked off to someplace with a driveway.

IMissTheSunshine · 18/09/2025 14:47

There may be room behind the silver car now. However, you should take into account that the car behind may move and be replaced by a car that decides to park as close as you have… you are too close

Abominableday · 18/09/2025 15:13

What would happen if the mum of the white van, parked in its lay-by across the street, also parked an extra car along side it?

It would be the same distance in your the road as a car who was parking against the kerb?

The silver/grey one is.

But they couldn't both do it, could they? They'd not leave enough space for two cars or everyone did it. Just that you're saying all the folk with lay-bys do this but it's hard to see how.

I meant it’s a common thing for someone to block another family member in and park alongside.

Same as you couldn’t have 2 people park across from each other against the kerb where there’s not a lay-by - but there’s room for one

There’s room at the back at the moment until that person leaves and someone else comes and parks too close like you have , then the silver car can’t get out.

BadgernTheGarden · 18/09/2025 15:43

Italian parking, leave the brakes off and when you want to leave you gently drive into and push the parked cars along until you have room to get out.

It also depends on the kerbs and the height of the kerbs the silver car is very tight in so has very little room to get lock on without climbing the kerbs, who parked last? If the silver car reversed in there they should be able to get out, if the blue car just drove up and parked that close to them, not very polite.

ThreePears · 18/09/2025 15:59

I could get a car out of that space, especially if there is more space at the rear. Besides, Silver car's bumper is encroaching onto the lay-by area so they clearly didn't give a toss about anyone else when they parked there.

Take a photo of the registration plate, and then ring your local police non-emergency number and say that a male driver has just been aggressively swearing at you, a lone female, for parking in a space outside your own house.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 18/09/2025 16:22

I guess this thread is showing up those who lived in streets with parallel parking, and those who havnt.
IMO, there is enough space.
But then I always think the parking bays, where marked, for parallel parking are ridiculously large!

Jom222 · 18/09/2025 16:27

thanks for clarifying- Team Blue here.

I remember once when I was a new driver, creeping slowly to get in or out of a parking space and my brother yelling 'they're called BUMPERS for a reason, you can touch other cars you're not even coasting ffs their car will be fine LET'S GO' lol he was right.

TabbyMcTats · 18/09/2025 16:33

I’m an excellent driver and I’d say that’s too close.

ExperiencedTeacher · 18/09/2025 16:39

I can’t believe how many are saying this is too close. It’s absolutely fine parking and if someone can’t get out they probably need to look at their own driving ability!!

applesblowinginthewind · 18/09/2025 17:13

If the car behind the silver car were to move and another car parked in it's place, but even closer to the silver car, then the driver of the silver car might not be able to get out (or might have to do a 53 point point turn).

But that would be nothing to do with the blue car? That would be the new car being inconsiderate?

It's a bit 'parking by braille' but nothing to get shouty about,

unsync · 18/09/2025 17:45

Perfectly fine. It's the wankers that can't park properly and need half a car space to manoeuvre that piss me off. In modern cars with power steering, that's easy to get out from.

sminted · 18/09/2025 17:51

Quite normal for London but does depend on space at the back.

It's weird because MNetters are normally so overconfident in their driving abilities!

Not excellent at parking then!

DancingFerret · 18/09/2025 18:04

Self (or, more accurately, vehicle) preservation would stop me parking that close.

You have no way of knowing if the driver of the silver car is competent at manoeuvring out of tight spaces or whether they're the type to get annoyed at someone parking that close and damage your car (there are some pretty nasty types out there).

When I was a new driver and bad at parking I would park with one end of the car by yellows etc so I always had room.
