Is this a reasonable amount of space to leave between cars?

I thought the grey car should have been able to get out (there’s room for them to go back a bit too) but I’ve just been sworn at and threatened to hit my car.

The grey car will have parked there not expecting anyone else to parallel park, due to the parking space. You've been able to do so due to knowing the owner of the space - seems a bit cheeky to get two spaces like that!
Not everyone is great at parking/has cameras etc.
(though I should say swearing etc totally uncalled for!)

BettysRoasties · 18/09/2025 12:31

I mean it’s a bit close isn’t it. Not everyone has parking sensors or are good at tight spaces but if you don’t mind your car getting scraped then you do you.

RB68 · 18/09/2025 12:33

Too close in my view unless there is a metre at back of silver etc. Also irrelevant if blocking own son in you shouldn't part across a driveway/parking place . It doesn't help it looks like its parking both sides which makes it harder to maneuver as well.

Mymanyellow · 18/09/2025 12:35

But hard to say without seeing the space behind. Why didn’t you photograph both gaps? Looks a bit close to me.

PinkPhonyClub · 18/09/2025 12:37

That is too close

donkey86 · 18/09/2025 12:38

It’s standard on the street I live on (terraced houses, urban area, no one has a drive). People here park with their bumpers practically touching the next car. But that said it takes some getting used to and I wouldn’t do it in an area where it isn’t considered normal.

Gosh, why did you laugh at them? You really are not coming off well here tbh.

Edited

Because the other poster was making a joke which was amusing. 🙄

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 18/09/2025 12:44

I would only park that close if the rear of the car was completely clear (e.g. they were up against a double yellow or a dropped curb).

I've managed to park myself in a gap that narrow before, but it was a near thing, and you can't control if the car behind them is going to come and make the rear gap smaller too.

You shouldn't have been sworn at, but you did park like a dick.

The parking space is owned by the houses - it’s like a little lay-by, you can see opposite that the van is in a lay by. They’re all numbered and included on deeds. Everyone parks that way if they’ve got more than one car - it’s normal to save taking up the limited road parking

It's fine OP. I'm honestly surprised by how many people are saying it's too close. I live in Wales, and many of our streets have on street parking only. Our town center is the same and that's how everyone parks. Sure, people might need to make a couple of turns to get out, but is it really that much of an issue? How much space are you suppose to give?

Also, if someone can't drive without parking sensors, maybe they shouldn't be behind the wheel in the first place!

childofthe607080s · 18/09/2025 12:51

If it was the same at the back it would be a right pain to get out so unreasonable

Blushingm · 18/09/2025 12:51

tartanhaggis7 · 18/09/2025 12:29

i notice from pic theres a driveway whos is it?? blue or grey?? if there is plenty of room behind grey then WHY park so close if i was grey id be pissed off!!!☺

It’s layby, owned by the blue car house with the house number on it

Room for the grey car to reverse but not enough to park a car in

Haha try living in Paris, bumper to bumper there, and it not unusual to very slightly push the other cars to fit in the space.

Kindly provide a diagram so that we can all inspect.

Bitzee · 18/09/2025 12:57

I live in London without a driveway so 99% of the parking I do is parallel/on street and I would absolutely park that close if that was the size of the space and it was the closest one available. But if I could leave more room a little more room then I would because why wouldn’t you?

😂 Ive heard people in Paris don’t bother with handbrakes to make this easier!😂😂

It's fine and pretty typical for on street parking round my way. Silver car owner shouldn't be parking on the street if they can't safely negotiate their way out of that space.

BeHappySloth · 18/09/2025 12:59

It's a bit tight and not ideal, but still possible for the grey car to get out if there is a bit of space for them to reverse into. Could be difficult if that space behind the grey car should decrease, e.g. if the car currently behind them moved and someone else came in leaving even less space.

I think it's a risk you take with on-road parking tbh. I wouldn't be without my reverse camera in a space like that though!!

Blushingm · 18/09/2025 12:27

No choice

How much space is behind you in the blue car?

MotherofPufflings · 18/09/2025 13:01

You shouldn't have admitted to being the driver of the blue car. If posters thought that you were the driver of the grey car you'd have been told that there was plenty of room and you shouldn't be on the road if you can't get out of a parking space.

I've had cars parked touching my bumper before. This is a bit snug but not the end of the world of they have space behind.

So glad you said this, thought I'd been making a horrible faux pas with my parking all these years! We're also terraces with only on street parking so we park tight to make sure there's enough room for everyone as cars get bigger. This gap is pretty standard here!

friendsDisUnited · 18/09/2025 13:04

It is much too close. I don’t think the space at the rear of the car is relevant as the car behind could move and another park there. If you are ok to park that close then so is the person on the other side of the car.

500mileslong · 18/09/2025 13:04

Also team silver. Blue car is too close and I’d be pissed off at having to do a million manouevres to get out. Did you need to park so close, how much space was behind you?
