This really is a scary time for free speech.

Another example right wing hypocrisy when it comes to free speech:

Jimmy Kimmel Live! suspended indefinitely after host’s Charlie Kirk comments https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2025/sep/18/jimmy-kimmel-live-suspended-indefinitely-after-hosts-charlie-kirk-comments?CMP=share_btn_url

Jimmy Kimmel Live! suspended indefinitely after host’s Charlie Kirk comments

ABC says late-night show will not air for foreseeable future after Kimmel accused Republicans of ‘doing everything they can to score political points’ from Kirk’s killing

Wow you still believe that the shooter was a right-winger? You need to get out of that leftist bubble tbh

Did you read rest of the post. Why double standards?

saraclara · 18/09/2025 15:49

Had anyone posted this yet? I wonder if he still holds the same view?

The kids/young people coming out of education now do not know how to debate or have a fair sense of History in this country. They have been TAUGHT deliberately only one way of thinking or seeing things. It's called communism. It's all part of the agenda of control.

In defence of higher education, they are exactly being taught how to debate as academic arguments are the bedrock of learning. It mostly certainly isn’t called communism lol. If you’re looking to blame someone, turn to the likes of Zuckerberg and the social media tech bros who deliberately engineer their algorithms to ensure the most divisive and most inflammatory pots are the ones that flood everyone’s feeds. Including lies and misinformation.

Everybody ought to get off social media and start reading a variety of actual newspapers again. Oh for the days of Walter Cronkite.

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 18/09/2025 11:38

Except no-one on here has said they’re glad he’s dead. People are just using that line to shut down any discussion of the person he was.

And people will bring up the person he was because his death has been made so public. And the only reason why his murder was made so public is because of the person he was.

After all, if all anyone said was “such a shame for the family” the discussion would have ended on the night he died. The same as all the other shootings in the US which barely make the news because they’re a daily occurrence.

But he was Trump’s mate and happened to be killed just as the pressure was heating up over the Epstein files. So it’s convenient to make a big deal out of Charlie Kirk having been shot, because it takes the heat off of Trump. However, making it so public means that people will talk about the kind of person he was. Because you can’t have a discussion without discussing the actual person.

You said in your previous post:

“And the amount of sympathy for Charlie Kirk clearly shows posters up as what they are.”

What exactly are posters being shown up as for expressing sympathy for someone who was murdered seemingly for expressing his political views?

Trendyname · 18/09/2025 16:14

EmpressoftheMundane · 18/09/2025 12:45

I don’t think the Trump folks need to try hard to distance the shooter from MAGA.

Why would a right winger want to shoot Charlie Kirk? Shooter was in a romantic relationship with his transgender roommate. Sounds pretty liberal to me. The engravings on the bullets were online culture war stuff. Can’t see why a shooter motivated by the culture wars were shoot someone on his own side.

The shooter was clearly animated by the hard left. So now we have the left resorting to violence and the right stopping different opinions being shared. They’ve switched sides.

Perhaps we could roll some of this back? Tolerate different opinions. Recognise rights should be universal, reciprocal snd absolute. No more appeals to context, identity, or just being special because this opens the foor to special pleading and sophistry.

Edited

Shooter was in a romantic relationship with his transgender roommate

There is no evidence yet about the romantic relationship.

Secondly, transgender did not shoot.

Why right wing is commenting on shooter’s ideology when the case is under investigation?

Kimmel is not wrong to say that they are using this for point scoring. Even if you disagree with him, you cannot fire him. Free speech is protected by the first amendment in the US. You can’t go against the constitution.

Will the tv station have to rehire him?

The left are doing just the same, saying the shooter was right wing as his family was Mormon and Republican.

So you love this level of dictatorship? Give your head a wobble. Nobody should be censored if they are not advocating harm to another human.

You are preaching to the converted. For the last ten years there has been a very nasty strain of authoritarianism coming from some sections of the left, what you are seeing here is people pointing out the hypocrisy.

I am appalled but not surprised at where we are.

There’s always been this level of dictatorship. Usually coming from the Left. You cant change the goal posts when you’ve been happy with the status quo previously I’m afraid...

ThreeFeetTall · 18/09/2025 18:47

But lots of people weren’t happy with the ‘status quo’?
Who should people vote for if they don’t want cancel culture?

First amendment rights protect you from the government, not from corporate. They probably have some sort of code of conduct clause they can use to get rid of him.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 18/09/2025 19:20

Just catching up. Wow. Mumsnet has really gone downhill. I really didnt expect so many "oh but the trans!"
I'm as GC as they come btw.
Not much debate on the hypocrisy of it all.

Re romantic relationship, I would think addressing him as love in the texts would be enough, as well as the fact that neighbours saw them hold hands.

Why would only the left wing ie people whose thinking aligns with yours care about these things? It’s not the case at all.

Eh? It's literally his job to talk, he's a talk show host. Your job isn't relevant.

As I said, if an employee brings the company into disrepute then expect consequences. I don’t blame ABC and Disney for not wanting the repercussions from one persons opinion and potentially breaching the terms of their license. I don’t recall saying my job was relevant but okay if it makes you feel better.

You're not this naive. What Kimmel said was extremely tame and benign.

This is censorship and it's dangerous.

The affiliate that said they would not air his show have been being pushed by management to lean to the right in its news coverage.

And I suppose that the lefties do?

Both left and right only believe in free speech as long as they agree with the views.

Mind you Toby Young surprised me when he did not condemn the Oxford Union guy who rejoiced in Kirk's shooting. He said that it was free speech.

DoinFineIThink · 18/09/2025 23:58

ColdSalads · 18/09/2025 09:56

No, this is nonsense. The MSM has been left leaning for 2 decades - that's beginning to end now.

This isn't the start of fascism, it's the start of everyone becoming sane again.

Eh? Has it bollocks.
Most mainstream newspapers for a start have not been left leaning at all. Unless you think the Daily Mail, Express, The Sun etc are all left leaning?!
As most titles aren't.
The only one I can think of that still seems to be a left viewpoint is The Mirror.
Possibly the Guardian as well, not read that for years though.

There’s always been this level of dictatorship. Usually coming from the Left. You cant change the goal posts when you’ve been happy with the status quo previously I’m afraid...

The goalposts haven't changed.

"Cancel culture", where public opinion against a private company (or even a public body) causes someone to be "cancelled" has existed for a long, long time. It used to be that someone could be cancelled for being gay, then public opinion shifted so that you could be cancelled for being homophobic.

It isnt a new thing, its only that the right coined the term as a means to attack the Left, when public opinion shifted leftwards. The right still "cancelled" or attempted to cancel people, too, they just only call it "cancel culture" when they don't agree with it.

In any event, cancel culture isn't a free speech issue - that was always a right wing lie.

By definition, freedom of speech means the right to articulate opinions and ideas without interference, retaliation or punishment from the government. That's why this IS an alarming attack on free speech, and most so-called cancel culture is not, and was not.

ThatDreamyLemonBiscuit · 19/09/2025 00:31

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 18/09/2025 19:21

That's not fair.

The right wing - particularly in the US - care deeply about restricting women's rights.

He was calling out the point scoring, there's the difference. Calling stuff out, pointing to their absurdity - hopefully in a witty manner- is literally his job.

StandFirm · 19/09/2025 00:46

This I think nails the issue better than anyone on this thread can express:
