Does such a jacket exist? I've only got £45 to spend on a jacket. Needed for walking in moderate rain.

Have you looked on eBay, I got a Regatta one for around £15 on eBay.

Nightmanagerfan · 15/09/2025 08:45

Stutterheim are very good! I got mine for about £25 on Vinted and it looked brand new. The women’s sizing is odd, eg I am a 10/12 and I got XS.

hexsnidgett · 15/09/2025 08:50

Tkmaxx are always good for waterproofs ime. Trespass, Craghoppers are usually reliable if not as breathable as more expensive makes.
Looking at Blacks website they have some in that price bracket too.

I got the aldi version of a dry robe last year ,
think it was £40 , it’s my dog walking coat and it’s been waterproof for me . Also if you don’t mind second hand , you’ll get a decent coat on Vinted for that price , I recently sold a Barbour jacket for £30, didn’t fit me anymore and cost me £229 new, was taking up space so sold for what I could get

Ballywas · 15/09/2025 08:50

Regatta version of a dry robe. Roasting and completely waterproof.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 15/09/2025 08:53

You want a jacket that’s either Goretex or waterproof up to 20,000mm. Anything less than that won’t keep you dry in any sort of persistent downpour. Unfortunately I don’t think you’ll get either for £45 unless you’re very lucky and manage to find one second hand.

Have a look in Blacks or similar but you really need to read the label - many will be labelled waterproof but if you look further it’ll say “up to 2000mm” or similar which is absolutely pointless.

I used to work in outdoor retail and the amount of people we had come in complaining because their cheap Trespass or Regatta jacket wasn’t working was ridiculous.

You may find something good within budget in a farm supply shop, although these are gentrifying and selling more expensive (but no more effective) brands these days. Some do good sales, but it’s not a good time of year for that.

Also try DIY stores. My warmest, most waterproof winter coat is sold as workwear, it’s built for people who work outside for a living, but is VAT free so more affordable.

Mossssy · 15/09/2025 08:56

What's important here is the hydrostatic head. Look on the item description for H/H. If it doesn't say, it's because it's rubbish!

Up to 5,000mm: Light Rain
5,000mm - 10,000mm: Average to Heavy Rain
10,000mm & Above: Very Heavy Rain

Try Mountain Warehouse? If you can't afford the waterproofness you want at new prices, try eBay as a pp suggested.

Florenceandthemaniac · 15/09/2025 08:58

I've a Decathlon rain coat that works! Prices reasonable.

Sign up to GoOutdoors and get their discount card, you'll find some good deals eg I bought a very good Berghaus jacket for less than half price about 5 years ago (was then about £45 I think)

Thissickbeat · 15/09/2025 09:01

Is it for walking to work / supermarket / school run /dogs?
Are you walking fast or dawdling with dogs and kids? Carrying anything?

Sorry to derail.. but can you advise in a jacket that is waterproof, but properly breathable? I get hot easily, so I don't want it for warmth, just to stay dry but not overheat!

This. Is there any way you can up the budget? A decent waterproof is well worth the investment as it will keep you dry in the worst weather and last for years.

I would suggest a Didriksons, but they start at about £100, so see if there's one on ebay or Vinted? They're very waterproof and durable so well worth the money.

Mine is streets ahead of my lighter waterproof (Tog24 I think) which is only really showerproof.

Here4the · 15/09/2025 09:31

My go to is musto but, again, would need to be secondhand. Good news is you get lots of people that buy great stuff for a one off event so plenty around.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 15/09/2025 10:29

@SummerFrog25 anything Goretex should be both waterproof and breathable - Berghaus is a good option. There are also companies like Rohan or RAB who don’t necessarily use Goretex but whose jackets are the same quality.

I wear a RAB jacket as a dog walker which keeps me bone dry - it was about £80 in the sales last Christmas.

amicisimma · 15/09/2025 11:27

I have a Windemere Waterproof Coat from Cotton Traders. It's really waterproof, even after years and years.

Thanks.

thats just reminded me. I have a (gortex) jacket in the loft that I stopped wearing as it was a bit tight (well I got a bit fat for), it might fit now, I should try that first.

but have saved your suggestions in case it doesn't!! Or it's no longer waterproof (though I'll try to wash in waterproofing if it fits! But isn't waterproof anymore)

Notmyreality · 15/09/2025 19:43

Despite pp you actually don’t need a breathable water proof jacket made from gore tex or other equivalent waterproof breathable membrane, and at your price point you won’t get a decent one anyway. If you are happy with a non breathable jacket then a simple rubber/plastic mac is best and can be fully waterproof - basically a plastic bag in coat form. You may also consider a poncho.

Waterproof breathable jackets are one of the biggest cons going. Its basic physics that for such a jacket to breathe the humidity on the outside needs to be lower than on the inside. If it’s chucking it down with rain then the humidity on the outside is near 100%, and the jacket can’t breathe. If it’s dry enough/humidity low enough to breathe efficiently, likely it’s warm and you’ll have the jacket unzipped anyway. Don’t listen to anyone who insists you MUST have a breathable waterproof jacket.

Nearlyadoctor · 15/09/2025 19:50

Lighthouse who are based in Ireland have some excellent raincoats. They’re slightly more than you want to pay but there are always discount codes for new customers etc. If you search under collections you can filter for heavy / persistent rain. I’ve have a long Outback mac and the Kendal jacket and the rain has never come through.
I spent nearly £250 on a Rab and it was hardly showerproof despite supposedly being fully waterproof.
As pp’s you be lucky on Vinted

See my answer above as to why so many struggle to find a good jacket that is actually waterproof and breathable.

Blimeyblighty · 15/09/2025 19:52

I was going to suggest Didriksons too. Mine was £20 in a charity shop.
