A waterproof jacket that is exactly waterproof in heavy rain and doesn't cost hundreds of pounds. PLEASE☔

Does such a jacket exist? I've only got £45 to spend on a jacket. Needed for walking in moderate rain.

See my answer above as to why so many struggle to find a good jacket that is actually waterproof and breathable.

Ok.

so what the answer to wanting to stay dry but not overheat. I'm a hugely hot person, but don't want to get soaked 🙇🏻‍♀️

A Poncho.

Or a jacket with lots of ventilation - armpit zips and other ways to increase ventilation.

Best solution? No jacket and use an umbrella.

I can't use an umbrella. It's often very windy where I live & only have function in one hand, which isn't enough without an umbrella.

I suppose a poncho is an option, just would prefer a jacket because if the wind factor here.

I got a trespass one in the sale for under £20 two weeks ago

I've got a bright pink regatta dry robe type coat that is truly rubbish. The coat is waterproof but the hood only covers half my head ... Such a rubbish design

Bjorkdidit · 16/09/2025 03:24

Dry Robes aren't designed as walking coats though. They're for getting changed under and keeping warm after watersports.

Different coats serve different purposes, keeping dry while active in wet weather is not the same as removing wet clothing without exposing yourself and keeping warm without having to get dressed properly.

I've got a 3-in-one from North Ridge which I bought in Go Outdoors (I think) a few years ago. It was £99 which I know is over your budget OP but it is really good in the wet. Might be worth looking on EBay or Vinted?

They’re not meant to be worn as coats though - as PP said they’re for getting changed after wild swimming or surfing, not to be worn for actual exercise or walking.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 16/09/2025 10:14

I have two Lighthouse coats (outback and Kendal) but they are not breathable. They get horribly sweaty, so I only wear them for a 5 minute dash around the block!
I highly recommend Seasalt Plant Hunter, they can occasionally be found at low prices.

Would caution against buying waterproofs used, because incorrect washing can mean they're no longer waterproof.

Here4the · 16/09/2025 13:35

For the warm people, I recommend buying a size up so you get a bit of airflow. Probably bad advice but has worked well for me so far!

What rubbish... How many people actually go wild swimming or surfing? They are a coat that just happens to be big enough to get changed in... If your skinny enough that is. Mine would be no use to a larger person.

Their slogan is quite literally "the ultimate outdoor changing robe" lol.

So yeah, I don't think I'm the one talking rubbish 😂

Well I use mine for swimming in lakes, rivers and the sea, only between about June and September because I'm soft, but I know loads of people who swim outdoors most of the year. I don't know anyone who wears a changing robe for dog walking although I have heard that people do.

If you are on small side look at kids as no vat. My daughters regatta raincoat was less than 50. Try mountain wearhouse and go outdoors

ACommonTreasuryForAll · 13/02/2026 10:52

DD has a Weatherbeata jacket for riding, and it keeps her bone-dry on hacks and work around the yard in all weathers. Can be sourced cheaply on eBay, but pricy new.

muddyford · 13/02/2026 11:00

Lands End Squall coats and jackets. Again, pricey but think the sale is still on. Code FS4P. I spent several winters beating on a local shoot and my Squall never let in a drop. Even better than a Barbour.
