How much do you pay monthly for gas and electricity?

Leading on from the other thread I just wanted a quick straw poll.

I'm now paying £185pcm for a small 3 bed maisonette. It just feels so much?

Family of 4 in a smallish 4 bed.
Direct debit was £160 but will not cover us through the winter, as we’re only slightly in credit now.

OVO wanted to put our direct debit up to £275! I cancelled it and just pay for what we’re using.

Is everyone fixing again now?

I've fixed for 12m with octopus

2 of us in 3 bed semi. £100 a month altogether reduced from £175. We moved here last year and our bills are much less...highest winter bill £175. We are £500 in credit.

£70pm in a 4 bed house.

but I’m a lower user using 1400kwh electric per year and 3900 kWh gas per year. I’m on the August 2025 fix with octopus.

AlexandraJJ · 14/09/2025 09:13

£155/month just changed to a fixed rate so reduced a little. 4 bed detached. New boiler 3 years ago. I’m mindful of using it now. There’s me and teen DD

MJMabel · 14/09/2025 09:14

£585pcm. Not ideal.

So looking at last month's bill's, we used £155.21 in electricity/gas. 3 bed semi with a family of 5. But we're being charged £396 per month, so we have a credit of £2185.07, so 6 months credit at our highest usage. I really need to ask them about that.

You should be able to adjust your direct debit yourself online or the app? What supplier are you with?

Pharazon · 14/09/2025 09:15

£194 per month. Very draughty single skin wall cottage and electric car. We have log burners in the winter thankfully (don’t pay for firewood).

MonsterMamaJam · 14/09/2025 09:15

£190 four bed detached with five people

Gallopingfanjo · 14/09/2025 09:15

c£472 added together

Gas £221.68
Elec £251.08

Fuck me, wish I’d never checked.

Crikey, I'd be drawing £1500 of that back, stick it in a savings account for a rainy day, better than generating interest for an energy company.

jomaIone · 14/09/2025 09:20

We pay £165 a month for both. End terrace, 2 adults, 2 kids. Don't skimp on electricity, but try not to use heating until actual winter. Once it is cold though we don't skimp. We have £300 credit at the moment and just looking at a cheaper fix for the next year at £140.

Wigtopia · 14/09/2025 09:05

Could it be working from home? Ours is about £186 per month and we’ve not used the heating since January, so the gas part is only about £14 for our gas hob.

but WFH there will be electricity being used every day with laptops, lights, all the cups of tea and coffee etc

I don't think it's WFH. I only heat / light the room I work in. Kids are at school. I only have 2 or 3 cups of tea. Oh and I only work 3 days per week.

Also to add we don't have a tumble dryer or even a dishwasher. I run the washing machine approx 4 times per week. 1 TV, 1 console (which is on for limited time). No electric car. Charge phones / x1 ipad here and there. Probably run one bath or have one shower a day.

Jaysus!!

That is wild.

But I'm assuming affordable (relatively) if you've been paying it all this time.

£150pm, currently £50 in credit. With Octopus. 4 bed detached, 4 people in it. Will be in debit come November when we put heating on.
Saying that, downsizing to a house with no heating installed, bills will be lower but....

TheAmusedQuail · 14/09/2025 09:29

£120 a month. BUT I never have the heating on, don't put the oven on, don't have baths (use the gym) or showers. I have no idea how I need to pay that much. For a kitchen, bedroom, living room.

Campbellcarrotsoup · 14/09/2025 09:30

3bed 1930s semi b energy rating. Solar panels and solar heating no battery. 15 year old set up. Moved in 3 years ago.
They can't seem to get our direct debits right. We are 500 in credit. They keep changing our direct debit upwards but we are now 500 in credit. I've had direct debit reduced from 130 to 77 again again for gas and electric.

BunnyLake · 14/09/2025 09:31

£180 pm for a 3/4 bed detached. I can’t afford to pay more so keep a close eye on usage via the app.

Autumnbehavingyou · 14/09/2025 09:32

Anywhere between 400-700 per month for gas and electric. Varying weather, two electric cars, large home, quite power heavy as we have a lot of luxury facilities/appliances that stay on.

FrothyCothy · 14/09/2025 09:33

£130, 2 adults, teen and tween in a 1930s semi.

EveryDayisFriday · 14/09/2025 09:36

£280, 4 bed detached. The DDs have lengthy showers despite many threats discussions about energy and water preservation. I wfh so its always occupied and we both charge our electric cars at home. This is our monthly fuel cost as well as our electric and gas usage.

stairgates · 14/09/2025 09:36

Crunchymum get a smart meter so you can see where it is being spent as that does seem quite high for not a great deal of things running

Nannyfannybanny · 14/09/2025 09:37

£20.50,2 bed open plan bungalow, both retired. Cavity wall insulation.Solar panels 2 batteries. Making roughly £80 a month, which is stored up for the winter months.. cook all electric, but I always batch cook.

imadeitnice · 14/09/2025 09:39

We pay £350 a month but only use about £170 at the moment which usually rises to about £250 in winter. We have £1100 in credit. Will take half of that out soon. DH would prefer to reduce the payment by £50 per month but I would rather over pay while we can.
House is 4 bed detached with 4 adults and an electric car.

Crunchymum · 14/09/2025 08:58

Why am I paying so much? We're 1 adult, 3 DC in top (3) floors of a maisonette?

I WFH, it I'd quite an old / draughty house but we don't have the heating on continuously or overnight. I heat one room when I WFH.

They put my prices up in July as well by £30pcm. We hadn't had the heating on in months.

I'm not even sure who to check this with? Can I change suppliers?

Do you have a smart meter or submit regular readings? Do you understand the difference between a monthly DD and how much energy you use?

There's a price cap and anyone can change suppliers, obvs some provisos might apply but unless you go for a fixed deal there's no money benefit in moving from one price cap supplier to another

Maybe you just use a lot of energy
