What do you do if having a day at home?

just that really? We’re a busy family and don’t often have a day when we don’t need to be somewhere but it looks like today is that day. However, I don’t really know what to do. The house is clean, have planned dinner for tonight and now I can just sit but I feel guilty. I have teens who are both happy to stay in but will probably spend the day on screens if I dont intervene. I really don’t want to leave the house but not sure what to do while we’re at home!

Watch a film, bake biscuits, read a book, take a bath. Whatever it is that you like doing.

JulietSierra · 13/09/2025 12:07

Sofa, book, coffee, biscuits. After the week I’ve had at work I really can’t think of anything I’d rather do.

Ilikecocacola · 13/09/2025 12:08

Book
Garden
Nice magazine & cup of coffe

ChocolateMagnum · 13/09/2025 12:09

Are you serious? Wow!

Um, let your teens enjoy the space to do what they fancy. You read, knit, watch TV, do some gaming, play board games, go for a walk.

Hatty65 · 13/09/2025 12:10

If it is that rare to have a day off I would not feel obliged to entertain teens in any way. Or to monitor their screen use.

I would read, sit in the garden, potter happily. Have a long bath. Enjoy my free day. People could get their own food as and when.

It's a day off.

minipie · 13/09/2025 12:10

Erm I guess I go on Mumsnet 😳

FirstdatesFred · 13/09/2025 12:10

I never don't have jobs to do, they are never done!
Garden?
List stuff on vinted?
Sort out a problem area, cupboard, drawer or garage?
Take stuff to the tip?

RedwallMattimeo · 13/09/2025 12:10

Do you have a garden? It’s the perfect time of year to plant most spring bulbs so I’d go and buy some of those and do that and look forward to how happy I will
be to see them in the spring.
I’d spend an hour or two in the garden or on the sofa reading.
And I’d attack a cupboard or the garage or something and have a bit of a sort out. Or re-jig my wardrobe & drawers to move the shorts & summery dresses to the back and find my autumn-y clothes. At the moment, I get a little pang of sadness each time I get my clothes out in the morning

Doorbellsandknockers · 13/09/2025 12:10

Exercise, tidy, phone my mum, drink tea, listen to music, read.

shellyleppard · 13/09/2025 12:11

Read a book or build Lego with my teens.... plus a cuppa and a packet of biscuits 😋

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 13/09/2025 12:12

I have a day like this at least once a week. So far today I've had an "everything shower", had breakfast, watched a couple of movies, messed about online, styled my hair and fed the animals. I don't really get stressed about screens (no kids here) and will happily spend the day online on various forums and watching stuff on Netflix or whatever.

starballoons · 13/09/2025 12:34

Thanks all! I guess I should stop with the guilt and make the most of it!
I had a day off work earlier in the week so got pretty organised then. I’m sure I could do some decluttering but quite frankly I don’t want to. My youngest is currently making banana bread so at least she’s off her screen for 30 mins but I’ll leave her alone for the rest of the day!

Is this a serious question? Do grown adults really not know how to fill their time?

Minkton · 13/09/2025 12:41

Nice long bath, read a book , pot of tea, digestives, feet up, watch an old movie, make some nice sandwiches, perfect day!

Davros · 13/09/2025 12:41

I had a day like this yesterday. I cleared out our little shed, planted some heather, put screen wash in the car, lugged boxes of DVDs upstairs until I decide what to do with them, read my book, had a kip, popped to a friend’s for a cuppa

rosydreams · 13/09/2025 12:42

i would bake or just chill in my chair

Completely serious. I’m well aware that I could sit on the couch all day and watch tv but wanted to know what other people do if they aren’t leaving the house. As I said in my OP we’re usually a very busy family and I can’t actually remember the last time I didn’t leave the house all day!

I start with sorting out a cupboard so I feel I’ve done something then I can happily sit around all day, I’d say it’s one of my main strengths.

Davros · 13/09/2025 14:25

@MyElatedUmberFinch I consider it a super power

Was going to write my own response, but this is it!

MiddleAgedMusings · 13/09/2025 14:33

Gosh I live for days at home. What exactly is it that you feel guilty about, were you raised in a family where your parents always made you and siblings do chores or clubs? My mum had this growing up and once she hit her 40s and 50s, she couldn't just sit, watch TV, listen to music, or relax, she had to be always doing something. It very nearly rubbed off on me, thank god it didn't. Doing "nothing" is nothing to feel guilty about, enjoy it.

buffyfaithfredwesley · 13/09/2025 14:36

Went to a cake shed down the road (walking distance)
cleaned out the fridge drawer
laundry
watched a film
prepped some food
started a book
just generally pottering about (I love a day of pottering!)

FirstdatesFred · 13/09/2025 14:42

Also lockdown wasn't that long ago! What did you do then?

LaundryGarden · 13/09/2025 14:48

Pretty much what I’ve done today. Went to the farmers’ market on foot first thing, came home with flowers and vegetables, made brunch, ate outside and read the paper, now reading a novel with coffee, will plant some bulbs later. Next week and next weekend are busy socially, and DH is away tonight, so will probably watch a film with DS.
