Sainsbury’s complaint -Email?

Stopsnowing · 13/09/2025 09:56

I had money stolen from me at a Sainsbury’s store - possibly by a staff member. Have made a police report and want to make the store aware even if they won’t go as far as reviewing CCTV.

Called their customer care line for an email and was
told I would be wasting my time writing in. I would still like them to have a written record of my concern and a written response from them confirming their policy is to do nothing. Does anyone have a working email?

Curious what makes you think it might have been a staff member. How was it stolen?

Permittedperson · 13/09/2025 09:58

What happened? That’s shocking!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/09/2025 10:06

That’s fairly accusatory. What are you backing it up with?

However if you do want to follow up the chat facility on the app is really helpful

Hoppinggreen · 13/09/2025 10:08

All sounds a bit unlikely and I am not sure exactly what you are wanting them to do but if you go onto their website you might find an email address or a chat option

TeaForTheTillermanSteakForTheSun · 13/09/2025 10:08

They won't email saying their policy is to do nothing.

They can't keep a baseless complaint on file, so they will have to wait for a police investigation, and then they can take whatever action is appropriate.

Stopsnowing · 13/09/2025 10:52

Left my handbag on one of their petrol forecourts. It was handed in but when I collected it everything was there apart from cash. The area will have been covered by cctv with car reg etc. to
aid in identification. It is possible the money was stolen before it was handed in. Obviously the police will or won’t investigate but if I was the manager of a store I would want to know. I am not accusing the staff, just explaining why I think Sainsbury’s should have a record
of the incident.

How much cash? Thousands I'd assume for the Sainsbury's staff member to know they'd lose their job?

Permittedperson · 13/09/2025 10:58

That’s some leap to thinking the staff stole cash. Wouldn’t you think it’s much more likely someone nicked the money before it was handed in?

DiscoBob · 13/09/2025 11:06

It's appalling for you to blame the staff. It's obviously the person who handed it in. Frankly you left cash unattended outdoors in a cost of living crisis. I would never ever expect to see it again and would just be deeply grateful they didn't steal the rest of my stuff and handed in my bag.

Be more careful next time. And don't carry large amounts of cash if you can avoid it.

Might not be the person who handed it in. They might’ve handed it in but they money had already been nicked.

bluecrochetedplane · 13/09/2025 11:10

The problem is you want to make a complaint about something you dont know has happened.
The facts are you left your bag unattended and when you got it back it had been raided.
You have no idea who stole your stuff only that it had happened.

Let the police investigate if they think it's important and then when you have the facts you can go from there.
If it turns out the staff member did steal your stuff that is when you make the complaint. You dont pre-complain.

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 11:13

The staff are cash handling all day, it’s most unlikely it was a staff member. Are you able to tell us how much was lost ?

Not really, tills are balanced, it would be easy to trace money going missing from a till... taking from a misplaced handbag, not so much....

TulipCat · 13/09/2025 11:33

I think you're directing your energy in the wrong place. You have absolutely no grounds to suggest it was a staff member, that's why they're not falling over themselves to appease you. You left cash unattended and someone took it. Yes it was on Sainsburys property but that's as far as the connection goes. At best, they might send a nice email saying how sorry they are that someone stole your money.

You are annoyed with yourself at your error and looking for someone to make it better. That would be family and friends, not Sainsburys.

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 11:34

@LorelaiGilmorepoodles123 aaah yes of course, sorry. still do not think it was staff though

MousseMousse · 13/09/2025 11:36

Sainsburys customer service is very poor. I had cause to make a complaint about a delivery that resulted in damage to property and it was impossible. The manager of the issuing store was fantastic and even explained that the complaints service was notoriously bad - she had to pull strings and went out of her way to get the complaint escalated in order for it to be addressed.

No I don't either really... truth is op has no idea who took it sadly....

That's true. It could be absolutely anyone. I mean arguably could you even call it stealing when it was cash taken from an unattended bag?

To leap to accusing the staff is bang out of order though. OP wasn't careful with her property and very fortunately got the majority of it back. She should see it that way rather than accusations of staff stealing from her.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 13/09/2025 12:20

You have absolutely no proof that any of their staff stole anything - you can't even prove you had cash in it when you lost it.

What do you hope to achieve by complaining, exactly?

TY78910 · 13/09/2025 12:32

Shops will not give you any CCTV. They also won’t investigate this unless you are certain it was a staff member. They will however cooperate with police. So in that sense they’re correct in saying your email won’t do a lot. Whoever reads it will just say ‘okay, sorry this happened to you, we will assist the police should they want to get in touch’ - so it is a pointless exercise sending it in. The crime happened in a car park that is managed by a private company, not the supermarket. It was handed in as lost property. Nothing to do with them really unless you have concrete proof that their staff were involved in taking it.

Minkton · 13/09/2025 12:34

Sainsburys customer care…. I don’t think it exists any more. They are neglectful, barely civil, couldn’t care less. Absolutely awful.

Chickslicky · 13/09/2025 12:38

You raise it with the Police not Sainsburys you lost your bag and it's the polices responsibility to find out who took your money - how much are we talking about?
Terrible to accuse staff with absolutely no proof - often staff are older teens / young adults and that is a horrible thing to do to basically a kid.

Of course taking money from an unattended bag is stealing, FFS! What else would you call it? ‘Helping yourself?’ ?

Well I wouldn't go to the police and say someone's stolen cash out of my unattended bag and I want you to find it and return it to me.

Of course it is totally wrong but I just think it's also totally inevitable.

Permittedperson · 13/09/2025 13:02

Of course it’s stealing!! Blaming the staff is wrong. And so is blaming the person who handed it in.

but it’s definitely stealing.
