Sainsbury’s complaint -Email?

Stopsnowing · 13/09/2025 09:56

I had money stolen from me at a Sainsbury’s store - possibly by a staff member. Have made a police report and want to make the store aware even if they won’t go as far as reviewing CCTV.

Called their customer care line for an email and was
told I would be wasting my time writing in. I would still like them to have a written record of my concern and a written response from them confirming their policy is to do nothing. Does anyone have a working email?

Well I wouldn't go to the police and say someone's stolen cash out of my unattended bag and I want you to find it and return it to me.

Of course it is totally wrong but I just think it's also totally inevitable.

That’s a different argument altogether.

LIZS · 13/09/2025 13:26

The store manager’s details will be on the website. You can’t prove it was staff member so leave that accusation out. Keep it factual.

Westfacing · 13/09/2025 14:00

I'm sorry your cash has gone missing.

Decades ago a friend visiting from overseas left a bag with personal items plus a significant amount of cash on a Tube train. He went to Lost Property at Baker Street and the bag had been handed in - it had the personal items but no cash.

There is no way of knowing whether the person handing the bag in, if it was a passenger, or the tube/station staff, or lost property staff took the money.

As for Sainsburys customer services - a couple of years ago I started a thread about how staff at their Great Portland Street branch had gone above and beyond in their kindness to a blind customer. I tried to contact Sainsburys to comment on this but it proved impossible to so do online and after much faffing around I'm afraid I gave up!

Stopsnowing · 13/09/2025 14:05

Just to be clear I am not accusing anyone of stealing. Simply that a review of the CCTV will likely show who took the cash. And if I was a manager I would want to know if there was an issue. I am most cross about the offhand manner of their customer service and the way it is so hard to contact them in a meaningful way.

And I often seek out the manager in my local store to tell them if a staff member has been helpful.

Agreed. I only mentioned the possibility to exaim
why I thought I ought to inform Sainsburys as well as the police.

Ultimately you’ll have no proof there was money in the handbag in the first place
if it was the staff doubt they’d be stupid enough to do it on camera

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 13/09/2025 14:11

Sainsbury's aren't going to look at CCTV for you or based on your say-so. You need to go to the police and ask them to investigate if you believe your cash was stolen on their premises.

Left my handbag on one of their petrol forecourts. It was handed in but when I collected it everything was there apart from cash. The area will have been covered by cctv with car reg etc. to
aid in identification. It is possible the money was stolen before it was handed in. Obviously the police will or won’t investigate but if I was the manager of a store I would want to know. I am not accusing the staff, just explaining why I think Sainsbury’s should have a record
of the incident.

In this situation I would be blaming myself for leaving my handbag on the forecourt and just be grateful I got the bag and contents back. You have no proof at all that it was a member of staff. It's very likely someone picked it up, grabbed the cash and dropped it, then someone else handed it in. Honestly, this one is 100% on you. Sadly, if we leave our valuables in a public place, they are likely to be taken. The police have more important things to worry about and Sainsbury's have no responsibility here whatsoever.

Thelittleweasel · 13/09/2025 14:44

Send a letter to the branch manager and a copy to Head Office. It used to be in Stamford Street in London. If you want a response make that clear. Email is not important enough for anything so serious

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/09/2025 13:11

That’s a different argument altogether.

I do agree that it is stealing. But I would see it differently to being robbed, pickpocketed scammed or burgled as human nature dictates that if you leave cash unattended you won't get it back. As soon as I realised I'd left the bag I'd just not expect the cash to still be there.

GameWheelsAlarm · 13/09/2025 14:53

It's extremely unlikely that it was the staff member. It would almost certainly have been a random member of the public.
It's reasonable to let them know that their CCTV footage probably has evidence relating to a crime on it and that they need to keep it safe and hand it over to the police otherwise they will be perverting the course of justice. I would be going in to speak to the manager but if you've already antagonised them by accusing their staff that might not work. A written letter won't be seen. I have always found that contacting them via Facebook Messenger gets reasonable responses but I have only ever contacted them with quite normal customer service issues

hiintrepidheroes · 13/09/2025 14:56

Just to be clear I am not accusing anyone of stealing.

But this whole post is about someone stealing, and accusing a retail worker. Also, who even carries cash any more??

The store aren't going to check their CCTV based on a random accusation from a member of the public.

If OP wants to escalate this, she needs to report the theft to the police who can then force Sainsbury's to look at their CCTV. They won't do anything without a crime reference number.

It won’t be perverting the course of justice if they haven’t kept the cctv.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 13/09/2025 17:04

Well firstly, you were stupid to leave it on the forecourt

Secondly, far more likely to be the person who handed it in rather than any member of staff

And finally, they are not permitted to review the cctv just because you allege that there was money stolen from your handbag that you left non thebforecourt. They will only legally be allowed to review it following a formally and legal request by the police.

Next time look after your belongings.

Stopsnowing · 13/09/2025 20:12

Totally stupid of me to leave my bag. I expect
a review of the cctv will show a member of the public pocketing the money. A report has already been made to the police. I do want the manager to be aware so
they can preserve the cctv (and yes review it
if they want - of course they can review what they record.) I will be writing to head office but email
wpuld arrive quicker (see point above re preservation of CCTV)

OP posts:
Permittedperson · 13/09/2025 21:14

The only people that can tell them to show them the cctv is the police. And there’s no way on the face of the earth that Sainsbury’s will be accused of perverting the course of justice over cctv being deleted that showed a handbag being lifted off the forecourt.

I work in retail and we can’t just access CCTV and save it on the request from a member of the public. This will need to be done with the direction of the police or their internal security which only gets involved when prompted by police. And depending on the value that was taken, the police may not pursue it.

You OP did suggest it was a member of staff to be fair.

as it was outside on the forecourt I’m not even sure it would be considered a Sainsbury’s issue. I’m not sure but if I left my purse in a Sainsbury’s car park I’d think it was basically left out in the public space.

I think you’re a bit naive here OP - the store will do absolutely bugger all unless the police ask them to.
