Can you stand up without using your hands?

I didn't use to be able to but I've been going to the gym for a year, doing a variety of strength, yoga, pilates and spin classes. And now I can do it!

I am mid fifties and feeling very pleased with myself.

I’m 62, diagnosed severe osteoarthritis in both knees (on list for replacement) and probably one hip (going through diagnostics atm). I can get down and up to bottom stair without using hands. Can do a “get-up” from the floor (not cross-legged) and can jump onto a 20 inch box with a weight in each hand. Can’t kneel though!

Wow! I'm the same age with dodgy knees and can't kneel....and assumed I'd never be able to do this...you've given me hope!

LaughingCat · 14/09/2025 20:08

Usually - yes. Right now, I’m 38+2 and need both hands and a variety of groans to get up 😂

Lokiswife · 14/09/2025 20:10

Nope, not from the floor, or a chair! I'm 45 & have Fibromyalgia, back, neck, hip & mobility problems, I'm screwed & have been for almost 18 years now!!! Lol

No, I could barely get down there, I sort of landed with a big flop. I'm 67 and walk lots, but that's about it.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 14/09/2025 20:18

Yes, I can spring up from cross legged. But I am only 40 and pretty fit and active so not really that surprising or impressive.

Ladymeade · 14/09/2025 20:21

Yes I can but I invariably go "ooof" when I do it (59 yrs old) 😄

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 14/09/2025 20:54

I've been practising this all weekend. Still can't do it.Angry
I think I could do it if my back was a foot longer (and the rest of me still normal size) so that I could thrust my weight further forwards.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 14/09/2025 22:08

I’ve been practising standing straight up from a cross-legged position, and I can do it, but end up turning 45 degrees anti-clockwise as I stand!

I’m guessing it’s because my right hip is tight?

PippEmma · 14/09/2025 22:41

WTF I am just grateful i can still get off the sofa!!

Redburnett · 15/09/2025 09:39

No, and it is an annoying reminder of my age, but I do enough exercise classes to make sure I can still get up from the floor using my arms as well. Knowing that not being able to get up after a fall can result in terminal decline in even older people helps motivate me to keep going to Pilates etc even though i am fairly hopeless at it.

TiredyMcTired · 15/09/2025 20:33

No, just been diagnosed with petellofemoral osteoarthritis, which means I have bone on bone with my kneecap and femur. If I bend down there is no chance I’ll get up again without having to haul myself up. Even need to put hands either side of me when getting up from a chair, and struggle to lower myself onto the loo! I’ve always been fairly active, did regular gym, cycling etc but last 6 months my knees have deteriorated quite quickly. I’m ‘only’ 57!
