Can you stand up without using your hands?

I didn't use to be able to but I've been going to the gym for a year, doing a variety of strength, yoga, pilates and spin classes. And now I can do it!

I am mid fifties and feeling very pleased with myself.

OP posts:
Rallentanda · 13/09/2025 12:17

I'm nearly 54 and till recently I couldn't get off the floor no hands, but I've lost weight and gained strength and now I can. But not from cross-legged. I didn't know that was a thing and now I have a new goal.

Crunchymum · 13/09/2025 12:31

I can't even sit criss legged on the floor let alone get up from it with no hands😯

(In my defence I have an autoimmune arthritis)

supportergirl · 13/09/2025 12:34

Doesn't a burpee include a push up though? How are you doing that without using your hands 😂

I’m 62, diagnosed severe osteoarthritis in both knees (on list for replacement) and probably one hip (going through diagnostics atm). I can get down and up to bottom stair without using hands. Can do a “get-up” from the floor (not cross-legged) and can jump onto a 20 inch box with a weight in each hand. Can’t kneel though!

I think OP means this method?

That's a great video, thanks for linking. Loads of useful tips about how to work with this challenge within your own ability.

WaltzingWaters · 13/09/2025 12:45

Not currently at 29 weeks pregnant! But usually, yes.

Thissickbeat · 13/09/2025 12:46

I can't come up from cross legged without hands. I've been meaning to practice with the TRX at the gym actually. I used to be able to do it, then broke my ankle (doing something else) and I've been too scared to start trying again.

Can get up without hands from cross legged if I swing my legs round or go into a kneel though.

Daffknee · 13/09/2025 09:40

@moppety what is being able to deadlift your own body weight? Basically do a chin up?

Basically just being able to lift the equivalent of your own body weight from floor to standing and back down.

inaminn · 13/09/2025 13:12

Attention! I've just lifted my suitcase (weighed it and it's 23.2kg) from the floor to the boot. That's not my body weight of course, but not bad for a 68yr old either I reckon!

Maybe I'm in the wrong section here given my age though. Some of you can dead lift your own body weight. OMG 😮

TheWonkYes · 13/09/2025 14:01

This is my most loathed question. It's a party trick - somewhat depends on how your legs join at the hips and where you carry your weight.

It is really important to be able to get up off floor without help and using minimal touch points - and to be able to carry weights as you age - rise from sitting using legs only. Etc. but the standing from cross legged without using hands or knees. Why, why would that be a thing? - the screening test this comes from puts use of two touch points in same group as none for healthy outcomes. It does not make you a better person - it puts you in same category as people who can lick their elbows.

TheWonkYes · 13/09/2025 14:01

Yeah - obviously I can't do it!

Anotherename · 13/09/2025 14:15

No .

a year ago it was not at all. I have lost 70lb and now I can get from crossed legs to up on my knees- then I need to put weight on one knee to push up .

hopefully another 6 months of weight loss and exercise and I’ll do it 🤔

HostaCentral · 13/09/2025 14:16

I can't even work out HOW to do it, let alone accomplish it. For balance though DD can't do it either, but she can lift more than twice her weight! She is 57Kg, and deadlifts 140Kgs.

R0ckandHardPlace · 13/09/2025 14:19

I can only do it if I swing my legs round, get on my knees and get up from there. Is that allowed, or do you have to spring up?

Daffknee · 13/09/2025 14:20

moppety · 13/09/2025 12:58

Basically just being able to lift the equivalent of your own body weight from floor to standing and back down.

Ah, trickier to test at home unless you own gym equipment.

Demeter222 · 13/09/2025 22:25

Yoga can make you do things you never knew you were capable of. In my 20s I was a runner and fitness freak, and sadly always turned my nose up at yoga. These days I wish I'd started as a child and never stopped! Even my parents who are in their 70s with mobility issues do 'chair yoga' and it's helped them no end.

But to answer the question, yes I can stand from sitting. I can even roll up from laying flat and spring up to my feet - i can only thank yoga for this!

Findingithardnow · 14/09/2025 18:05

I have done in the past (early 40's) but as you pointed too, it was Yoga that I was doing at the time.just 20 minutes a day, probably 4 times a week.

I was so pleased with myself when I could!
But I can't now! 😪

I've been flicking my dressing gown out from behind me like a concert pianist flipping his jacket tails back before he sits at the piano. And then scrabbling about like an upturned tortoise.

This image is priceless

DinoLil · 14/09/2025 18:16

No.

Falls over laughing, crawls to the wall and tries to pull self up...!!

GhostInTheWashingMachine · 14/09/2025 18:20

Yes!!! Didn't think I could but just sat & stood cross-legged, no hands. Am 65

PhotoFirePoet · 14/09/2025 18:24

I’m 58 next week and yes, I can do
that. I can get down on the floor, cross my legs and get up again without using my hands too. 😊

fetchacloth · 14/09/2025 18:29

Unfortunately not as I have bad arthritis in my right knee. Currently undergoing physio which is slowly working but I'm not there yet. 🙃

AngelinaFibres · 14/09/2025 18:33

MaryMungoMidgley · 13/09/2025 00:37

I can do the cross legged one (60)

Me too. Also 60.

hoxtonbabe · 14/09/2025 18:50

Anyone that can do this I’m seriously impressed.

I got down, crossed my legs, and then was like “what now?” Ended up using my hands and getting up like I was about to do the windmill break dancing 😂

Im just content I can still bend over to hold my ankles without bending my knees, lol

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 14/09/2025 18:52

Yes from cross legged. I just push down on the sides of my feet and up I go.

I was really surprised at a works Christmas party, that I was the only one who could touch my toes with straight legs and I was the second oldest in the group. I don’t know how we got on to that topic either!
