Anyone else never got a mood boost or a high from exercise?

I do it, I go to the Gym 3 times a week and I do strength training at home and some yoga and I walk most days. I have never in my life gotten a mood boost or hid of endorphins from exercise. I do it to stay fit and to not gain weight and other health benefits but to me the exercise is for the most part a chore I just have to do. I don't enjoy watching sport or playing team sports, I'm not competitive in the least all my hobbies are creative and somewhat sedentary.

Anyone else like this?

Me. Never a hint. I don’t do much now, not as much as you. But never felt any smidge of endorphin or mood boost. Don’t feel good or enthused or great or anything ever with it.

HyggeTygge · 12/09/2025 21:08

Yes! Me! I was going to start a thread on the same lines after every so often having this conversation with my dh!

I feel accomplished, maybe, and happy to have stretched and finished my workout, but that's about it
More dancey things I do get more enjoyment from.

FunkyFantasticFudgeball · 12/09/2025 21:08

Me! I'm the very same, not competitive, exercise is a chore. It actually puts me in a bad mood and sometimes I get a headache to boot. Fair play for continuing in spite of it, I'm not doing as well at the moment

Me! I hate exercise, have never ever gotten a mood boost. I hate feeling sweaty and dirty, I find it boring and frustrating that you have to do so much of it to get any benefit. I have better things I could be doing with my time!

youalright · 12/09/2025 21:09

I do but its short lived then I crash and need a nap. I never understand how people can go to the gym then go to work

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 12/09/2025 21:10

Me. I get no reward at all from exercise. It’s tedious in the extreme and there are so many things I would rather do.

blacklid · 12/09/2025 21:11

Glad to see I'm not alone! I usually have to listen to something to distract me from the boringness of the workout or I feel like I am going our of my mind with boredom during my session!

I do but only from running, not the gym. I think its the combination of exercise and fresh air& nature.

I can be feeling really tired or grumpy or whatever and a run always improves my mood.

EveryKneeShallBow · 12/09/2025 21:17

Nope, never, ever, ever had any positive feelings from exercising of any kind. Like pp it gives me a headache and bores me rigid. I’ve tried it all over the years - walking, running, swimming, dancing, sports, Pilates, yoga, weights. Nothing.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/09/2025 21:18

I recently found out that this is a genetic trait. Some people don’t.

blacklid · 12/09/2025 21:18

I must say I wish I did get a high or a boost from it!

Yet another example of how I lost the genetic lottery.

I do and I bloody love exercise now.
All my life I have loathed exercise, but when I hit 40 I started weight training for the first time and I really love it.
I only get that high when I’ve REALLY pushed myself hard, and it makes it so much easier to continue.

LinedOverLatte · 12/09/2025 21:21

Wow - so many of us! I never have and really wanted to! Years ago I did LOADS and felt generally good for being fitter and firmer but not once did I get that high during/after that people talk about.

I wonder why some people don’t? I struggle with low mood anyway, I wonder if it would just take more to get the high?

Silverbirchleaf · 12/09/2025 21:23

The only boost I get is satisfaction that I’ve done it.

Wbeezer · 12/09/2025 21:23

Me too, DH is the same, we go to the gym but are terrible for bunking off early! I read books on my kindle on the treadmill while speed walking on an incline, that way time passes more quickly!
I feel the benefit indirectly, like feeling stronger doing physical tasks but I don’t get a high at all!

I tried this, even hired a trainer to push me hard a couple of years ago, hated it even more. I just have to do it though, wish I actually got something out of it.

@LinedOverLatte My moods are generally fine, although I do get headaches quite often. I think as another poster said it is probably genetic. Also I'm not competitive and never impressed by things like marathons, cycling, mountain climbing (well maybe if it's Everest or something). Obviously I'm not rude about it but deep down my feeling is "meh" to any athletic achievement.

OP posts:
TeenLifeMum · 12/09/2025 21:29

No. I just get a slightly smug feeling but even running a half marathon I didn’t feel endorphins.

FunkyFantasticFudgeball · 12/09/2025 21:29

Interesting, I always thought it was just me or I was doing it wrong! I find when I have to go for physiotherapy the physios obviously get such a buzz from exercise and expect I'll be the same. Nope!

blacklid · 12/09/2025 21:30

Now that's an outrage right there!

I wonder how you’d feel if you didn’t do it though.

“mood boost” and “hit of endorphins” is pretty specific / extreme language - perhaps that’s part of the issue?

I know they’re common phrases now, but it reminds me of kids talking about or pretending to have a “sugar rush”, so others think “I must be missing something”.

CatherinedeBourgh · 12/09/2025 21:34

Me neither. I view it like brushing my teeth, I just have to do it to stop the system collapsing. But I get no enjoyment out of it.

LavenderBlue19 · 12/09/2025 21:34

Me! Nothing at all. I enjoy aspects of it - being outside, moving my body, feeling stronger each time - but I don't get endorphins. Zero buzz.

I'm also not competitive, I wonder if they go together?
