Anyone else never got a mood boost or a high from exercise?

I do it, I go to the Gym 3 times a week and I do strength training at home and some yoga and I walk most days. I have never in my life gotten a mood boost or hid of endorphins from exercise. I do it to stay fit and to not gain weight and other health benefits but to me the exercise is for the most part a chore I just have to do. I don't enjoy watching sport or playing team sports, I'm not competitive in the least all my hobbies are creative and somewhat sedentary.

Anyone else like this?

No, I never have and I think that’s probably why I find it so hard to motivate myself into exercise. I think two of my daughters do though as they enjoy going to the gym and pushing their bodies. One always did gymnastics as a child.

The closest I think I’ve got is giving birth. I had home births without pain relief and I got quite a physical and mental buzz from that so guessing endorphins.

Me. Never had one!

Not even after a 1 hour spin class that leaves you bright red and drenched in sweat? Or lifting a weight to point of failure? It may be that you're just in a good mood to start with or superfit?

Nope. Never, and I was quite seriously into weight training at one point.

Yes I got the euphoria after my home birth too.

I came on to say that for me, the more I push myself, the bigger the endorphins. E.g. I run a fast 5k run and feel great and when I got a PB of 90kg (deadlifts) I was on a high all evening 👊

However @TeenLifeMum has debunked that theory as she didn't even get endorphins after a marathon 😯 So maybe it's just one of those things.

It was a half marathon but I ran a lot training for it. I was proud of myself because I’m not a natural runner but I now just do 5ks for health with no desire to do more.

Interesting that it could be genetic. I thought I was always doing it wrong! I enjoy long walks and it makes me feel chilled and happy to be in nature but I’ve never felt euphoria then or after the gym. Just relieved it’s done and I like the stretching afterwards.
I refuse to run unless my life is in danger and I know I hate it. So no idea whether running would create this feeling and I’m not willing to try.
I go to the gym for the satisfaction of lifting heavier and heavier weights, the crime podcasts I listen to during, and looking forward to a refuel meal afterwards. Not because of any high I get. Slightly jealous now of people who do get a high!

I get nothing. And yes it is genetic. If you have ever done an Ancestry DNA test you can download your raw data and check if you have the gene variant. It is also a gene associated with weight gain.

I recently found out that this is a genetic trait. Some people don’t.

That's really interesting.

Thank goodness I don't have that gene, I don't hate exercise but I would find it much more difficult to keep up my regime if I didn't get that post exercise boost.

BananagramBadger · 13/09/2025 14:07

I like it when it’s over, but that’s just relief that I can stop rather than endorphins. I also like feeling smug that I have exercised.

Neither of those are good enough to make me want to do it more though.

bettyfloormop · 13/09/2025 14:18

I feel utterly exhausted after exercise. I just want to crawl into bed afterwards!
