What can DD do for the next few weeks (or months)?

We're in the middle of moving house, which should have happened by now, but of course these things have hiccups. I need to move for work reasons, and we desperately need to get out of our rental that is super likely to flood this winter.

DD (18) has just completed her level 3 childcare course, and was all ready to apply for school/nursery jobs in the new area, but of course it's not happened in time for this school year. This has left her completely in limbo, she can't really apply for anything here, nor there until we have a definite date. Any temporary work involving care or childcare inevitably want to do new dbs checks, which is a waste of everyone's time.

I'm feeling rather guilty for leaving her in this position, just wondering if anyone has any ideas of anything she could do at the moment. Is there any kind of temporary work that I've not really thought of? Any proper jobs aren't going to want the hassle of onboarding her just for a few weeks.

Start researching and applying for
positions in new area

Interviews, dbs etc - all takes time

Juicymed · 10/09/2025 15:24

How long until you do move?

SEmyarse · 10/09/2025 15:24

Yeah I know, but it's really awkward until we have a proper date

Are we talking weeks? Months?

I've never bought a house before, so not sure how bad these things can get. We've been told there is a backlog on council checks. We've been given a hopeful date of exchange shortly after 10th Oct. Don't know how soon it's realistic to move after that

Definitely get her onto researching, getting her CV perfect and applying.

And
lots of babysitting and maybe mother’s helper

Juicymed · 10/09/2025 15:27

How far away are you moving?

SEmyarse · 10/09/2025 15:27

And it's really annoying that the initial hold up was our end because we couldn't find a solicitor willing to do money laundering checks on us since it was from proceeds of crypto

Why was that deleted?!

Join an agency to do work in nurseries or schools

Will need dbs

SEmyarse · 10/09/2025 15:29

I'll try again, see if the next one is deleted

She’d be able to pick up a nursery job easy as there’s a massive recruitment crisis all over the country. Has she looked into agency work?

Doesn’t take long for a DBS to come back.

SEmyarse · 10/09/2025 15:31

I just said it was annoying that the initial hold up was our end because we'd struggled to get money laundering checks done due to the money coming from crypto profits. Irrelevant really, just feeling guilty that we've stranded her a bit

an agency will want her to already have one before taking her on their books

SEmyarse · 10/09/2025 15:31

She has a DBS, but everyone wants a fresh one

Do you know that for certain? Has she actually spoken to an agency?

It’s 4/5 weeks until exchange (you’re buying a council property hence need for council checks?)

so just encourage her to get babysitting jobs
and to get cv sorted
research options in new place
and apply!

how far away is the new place?

SEmyarse · 10/09/2025 15:34

Hilariously got another message deleted. Just mentioned why the delay in housing, and why I'm feeling a bit guilty for stranding her. Don't know how not to look super dodgy now!!

Most people don’t realise you can make a DBS transferable using the update service. Costs £16 a year and keeps your DBS up to date. Any employer can then use it. If she has had one done in the last 30 days she can still sign up to it. When she moves you simply update the address on her account.

DBS Update Service

Use the DBS Update Service to keep your DBS check certificates up to date or check an applicant's DBS certificate (used to be called CRB checks).

No, we're not buying a council property, we were told it was something to do with land registry checks??
