What can DD do for the next few weeks (or months)?

We're in the middle of moving house, which should have happened by now, but of course these things have hiccups. I need to move for work reasons, and we desperately need to get out of our rental that is super likely to flood this winter.

DD (18) has just completed her level 3 childcare course, and was all ready to apply for school/nursery jobs in the new area, but of course it's not happened in time for this school year. This has left her completely in limbo, she can't really apply for anything here, nor there until we have a definite date. Any temporary work involving care or childcare inevitably want to do new dbs checks, which is a waste of everyone's time.

I'm feeling rather guilty for leaving her in this position, just wondering if anyone has any ideas of anything she could do at the moment. Is there any kind of temporary work that I've not really thought of? Any proper jobs aren't going to want the hassle of onboarding her just for a few weeks.

She could secure a job in the new area and move into a house share/lodgings until your house sale goes through.

Op unless it’s long distance… then surely she can apply, and just commute if she gets a job and start date is immediate

Oxfordshire to Norfolk, so too far really. Yes, I agree about getting lodgings if she finds something first. I've already spoken to her about this.

I think this would be affordable in the short term, but very nervous about the whole thing falling through and her being there for months and months potentially on low earnings , she's like to do TA preferably.

Most people don’t realise you can make a DBS transferable using the update service. Costs £16 a year and keeps your DBS up to date. Any employer can then use it. If she has had one done in the last 30 days she can still sign up to it. When she moves you simply update the address on her account.

The DBS is from the beginning of her college course so I don't think this helps BUT super useful to know when she does get a new one, that she won't have to keep redoing for every job advert

I work in the nursery sector and I would encourage your DD to call any local nurseries and ask if they are looking for some short term casual help. I imagine they’ll snap her hand off.
Alternatively call local schools and see if they need any volunteers? Volunteers to read with children used to be a thing but it might have phased out

The nursery thing is interesting. Would they be likely to use her with her DBS which is almost 2 years old?

Why are you against her getting a new DBS now? If she starts the process now and uses the update service she will be able to use it either now or as soon as she moves. She will be massively more attractive to potential employers having a DBS done and ready to go as she will be able to start quickly

She has a DBS, but everyone wants a fresh one

If her dbs is less than 3 months old she can register on the dbs update service, 16 pounds a year and she doesn't need to do one every time, chances are thsy whatever job she does in childcare she will need to do a new dbs in the future anyway so its better to do it now.

I think she should just apply for jobs - she can possibly delay start if she gets one (if someone was coming from another job they'd have to give notice so wouldn't start right away anyway) and by the time she has applied, interviewed, they'd checked references etc it'll likely be close to your moving time anyway.
My son moved out at age 18 and did a full time job on minimum wage for a year - and lived quite a nice life! It is doable ☺️

As far as we can see she can only do a basic dbs off her own back, enhanced ones have to come from an employer, so it seems pointless if they're all going to want an enhanced one anyway? It's a shame her college one is too old to extend.

Definitely looking for jobs where she can move out to digs temporarily until we follow, but I am really nervous that our house move will keep getting delayed and she'll be there for months on end. She won't cope with much more than about 30 hours a week work, and likely to be on low wages, she struggles horrifically with suspected adenomyosis and IBS. If we KNEW it'd be definitely 2 months for instance, it'd be doable, but it might be miles more, or maybe only weeks and then we've been faffing for nothing.

It still seems more sensible to try to do something productive from here, but understandably people don't want the hassle for a few weeks. Enquired about some leafletting work, but not heard back. Anything else like that that people can think of? She's replied to some babysitting ads, but again understandably people want someone their kids can get to know over time.

Employers will not need to do their own if on update service. That's the point of the subscription. Get on the system and look for work now is my suggestion.

I'm not sure I understood right. She can use the subscription if her dbs is less than 3 months old, which it's not. She can get her own basic dbs, but this won't cover much childcare jobs. She needs an enhanced dbs which comes through employers, which would be worth paying the subscription for, but since she can't get an enhanced one, I assume there's no point in her getting her own basic dbs?

Are there any nanny agencies in the area? (Or even further afield for live in work)
She will be able to get her DBS through an agency and they will possibly have temporary work available, one off babysits, wedding nannying, nursery sickness cover etc.

I'd start applying for the new location now. They can then start the DBS process for your current address - if she has only just moved when you start, that could complicate things further as proof of address and finding records will be harder.
Once she has the enhanced one, definitely sign up for the renewal service - my DD has found it really good as multiple part time jobs have been able to use it.

It’s worth getting a job with DBS check anyway as you can pay an extra fee to sign up with the update system which means she won’t need to get another DBS when she gets another job. They can just see she’s registered with the update system.

My daughter is on a zero hour contract for a nursery until Jan when she starts a new position, she is a qualified primary teacher not sure if that makes a difference but they are always short staffed so worth phoning a few nurseries to ask.

She could try market or social research interviewing. It's not a permanent job but you can book shifts quite flexibly if they have work. They train you and you can do it from home on the phone or some do it face to face or in a call centre. It's just asking people surveys. Not that thrilling but it's good for building confidence.

That is a good stop gap. Actors and performers sometimes do it in between auditions/jobs.

I don't think the two are linked. Getting an enhanced one would be an entirely new process.

The basic one is no good at all for childcare, I would register with a childcare/nanny agency and get an enhanced one through them.

That's a good shout. Even if they don't manage to offer her much within the timescale, it'd be worth getting the checks done. Feels slightly cheeky since we know we're moving on, but she IS available to start immediately, just bureaucracy likely to be the hold-up in the short term.
