What's the best thing you've ever eaten at someone else's house?

Any memorable meals you've had at a friend's house? I think most people only remember restaurant food for the most part but some people go to a lot of effort with hosting.

For me - a uni friend was really into cooking and made a pudding. I have no idea what it was called but I think about it all the time. It's was about 20y ago! It had a sweet dough and fruit and something creamy. Absolutely amazing.

Couple of things that I still remember:

A wonderful stack of (I believe) hazlenut meringue thin discs, with something orange, presented as a gateau so squashed down a bit I think.

A broccoli, cauli and blue cheese salad. I just remember the tiniest little florets and a really nice savoury flavour.

Wish I had got the recipe for both.

When we had little children, my friend and I would take it in turns to host each other. She made the most amazing vegetarian curries and I still think about them (she now lives miles away so we tend to meet half way so I don't get to enjoy the curry goodness!).
My SIL once made the best pavlova I've ever had...she's made it since but it's never hit the spot in quite the same way!

We have friends from different areas of the world, and have always enjoyed meals they have cooked. No idea (frequently) what they are!

We had friends who were Kenyan and the wife made some fabulous meat/rice dishes and I have a Thai friend who always does amazing meals.

Actually - it's not at someone's house, but when I was teaching a pupil brought some Bacalhau in that their Portugese granny had made and it was absolutely fabulous. Sadly I don't know what time of bacalhau dish it was!

Literally last week - honestly it was one of the tastiest things I’ve ever had yet so very simple. A large serving dish of oven roasted cherry tomatoes (huge stack of really delicious home grown ones done in oil & balsamic) topped with a whole burrata each and drizzled with more olive oil and served with crusty bread. Omg it was divine I could have eaten the entire dish.

Sunday dinner at my Nana’s

Mumofsoontobe3 · 08/09/2025 22:25

My mums macaroni.
A Muslim lady - whom of which used to be my neighbour before I moved, made me some incredible dishes when I was newly post partum (unexpected but so grateful) and brought them to me the day I brought my first baby home and she done it for weeks after. I don't know the name of the dishes but it was hands down the best food I've ever had. I think about her often. A truely lovely woman and a wonderful mother and neighbour (and cook!).

PauliesWalnuts · 08/09/2025 22:30

My friend has a mum from Gran Canaria (she’s been here probably 50 years now) and I had her paella at her house - it was incredible.

My buddy from Rhodes makes the best Greek sausage bell pepper onion and beer stir fry, its not spetosafai as it doesn't have tomato but it's so savory and moreish- even with her ingredients from her wholesaler I cant do it the same

ColinVsCuthbert · 08/09/2025 23:02

My aunt did a huge sunday roast every week for the whole family, and they were just phenomenal. The carrots in particular... so good.

Also my gran's lentil soup. She boiled a whole ham leg in there to get the stock flavour. Anything my mum or I try to make can't come close to that.

Mmmkaay · 08/09/2025 23:11

Big freshly caught prawns cooked in a lot of garlicky butter with crusty baguette to mop up the juices. We didn't even use plates, just ate it straight from the pan. So simple but I've never forgotten it!

Late 1970s (see, so memorable, I remember it all this time later). My mum was a very good traditional British cook. We went to visit her younger cousin and she put on this buffet that had all these modern “foreign” things including an amazing olive oil and garlic salad dressing. Blew my mind (and my tastebuds).

Maddy70 · 08/09/2025 23:24

Venison casserole. Done on red wine. Absolutely amazing

PrancerandDancer · 08/09/2025 23:25

Our best man is Indian... his mum's potatoe salad is the best thing I have ever eaten. She used paneer and a load of other delicious magic that she would never tell me 🤣 I believe she was a cook though.

My husband (when we first got together) made me the most amazing lamb curry with lime when I'd had some really awful news and it was just like a hug in a bowl. Never been able to make the same one again but it was an act of love for sure.

JDM625 · 08/09/2025 23:33

As a child I lived in the Middle East for a few years. Dad's work colleague was local to the country and his mum would cook the most amazing food. Delicious savoury rice dishes, fish, lamb and all sorts. Flavoured with herbs and spices I'd never had before. I've tried to replicate some they just aren't the same.

I remember awful food from other peoples homes more than great food though!

CoastalCalm · 08/09/2025 23:36

I went to visit a Uni friend during summer hols , her mum ran a catering company and we had the most wonderful lunch and my first ever crème brûlée - it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever tasted , she sent me back up the M1 with a tub of it and I’m not ashamed to say I ate it on the road using my fingers as makeshift cutlery

This recipe cooked by someone who previously hadn't ever really cooked much. I don't even really like mushrooms but it was delicious.
